    1. Re: Liverpool Whittingtons.......possible connection to W.Sussex branch????????
    2. Jan Craig
    3. Hi Keith, Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner (I've had a bad migraine this week). I'm afraid there is not likely to be any connection between your W. Sussex Whittingtons and my Lancashire Whittingtons. They are about 250 miles apart. Roughly the population of Canada in between! The surname Whittington comes from the place name Whittington, which is quite common in England. There are 13 in my gazetteer: 1) Gloucestershire - about 4 miles SE of Cheltenham 2) Lancashire - 2 miles SW of Kirby Lonsdale ( I suspect this is where mine came from) 3) Shropshire - about 2 miles ENE of Oswestry 4) Staffordshire - 2 miles SE of Lichfield 5) Warwickshire - 1 miles NW of Atherstone 6) Worcestershire - about 2 miles SE of Worcester 7) Norfolk - about 9 miles NE of Brandon 8) Staffordshire - 3 miles SW of of Stourbridge 9) Derbyshire - about 2 miles N of Chesterfield 10) Whittington and Newbold - near Chesterfield 11) Northumberland - Whittington, Great; 6 miles NE of Hexham 12) Northumberland - Whittington, Little; 6 miles NE of Hexham 13) Derbyshire - Whittington, Old; in Chesterfield municipal borough I can't work out from this where your West Sussex Whittingtons are likely to have come from; they are all some way away so it's difficult to say which might be most likely. Possibly Gloucestershire is nearest.
