Sue, thanks for the oath data. Yes, I can understand about the family feelings towards your Aunt Viola. I come from a strong backgroud of Southern people and at the end of the war, Grant keep the punishment of the South up. He was a general but not a president. Today we are hearing about a group wanting to remove any Southern Heritage in Richmond, VA. There is one street, Monument Blvd., that is full of our heritage, and to me the destruction of these items would be very sad. If you have not seen this street, I suggest that you do before it is dismantled. Okay, list, y'all have been wonderfully helpful to me so far. Now I've found another Whittington I need help with. When my grandfather Whittington passed away last year, a photo came into my possession that no one else in my family knew what to do with. As I'm fast becoming the unofficial "historian" of my branch, I was the obvious choice. :-) The photo is of an older gentleman and lady, standing outdoors with a stringer of fish between them. On the back is written "Two veteran fishermen, brother & sister, snagged these 'reds.' " At the bottom is written "James Whittington, Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Nannie L. Welborn, Ellisville, Miss." Neither my father or my uncle knew who these Whittingtons were, so I posted a query to both the Whittington and Welborn Family GenForum message boards. No response. As y'all know, I've been looking for an Earl Whittington, and in searching online for any clues as to his identity, I came across a marriage listing for James Whittington to Birdie Weems on August 30, 1898 in Jones Co., MS. The search continued and in searching Scott Co., MS queries, I came across one titled "Birdie Weems." I contacted the author, who emailed me back and told me that the James who married Birdie was the son of Benjamin F. Whittington. Benjamin F. married Frances Bell on Sept. 27, 1871 in Leake County. They had 11 children, 3 of whom survived to adulthood: Joe, Nancy (Nannie) - born 1875 - and James - born 1877. The family moved to Jones County, MS in 1880. Surely these are the two in my photograph. However, I do not know how, or even if, Nannie and James are related to my Whittingtons. Their dates of birth are in the same time frame as my great-grandfather, Walter Andrew Whittington. All I can say at this point is, that since my grandfather had the photograph among his belongings, his family knew their family. If anyone has any information concerning Benjamin F. and Frances Bell Whittington or their children, James and Nancy, please contact me. Thanks so much, Sharon Hamlett
Hello, fellow Listers. I have a WHITTINGTON mystery that some of us here in Texas have been trying to tease out for a while. Goes like this: In the Leonardo Andrea compilation, there is a transcribed narrative. The informant was Levi Murray WHITTINGTON of Marlboro County, S.C. (born 2/7/1864). The recorder was his great uncle Jesse E. WHITTINGTON of Columbia, S.C. The narrative is as follows: "________ WHITTINGTON was the father of several children but I cannot recall his first name....My grandfather was his son and I recall 3 great aunts who were sisters of my grandfather. Nathaniel WHITTINGTON m. Peggy ___________ a Scotch woman Elizabeth WHITTINGTON m. Maj. Benjamin Bonicky ROGERS _________ WHITTINGTON m. a BROWN and Brownsville, Marlboro County was named for his family. Sally (I think) WHITTINGTON m. twice...first time to John IRBY and when he died she married a Mr. BETHEA. I think there were other children who went to Ala., Miss, & Texas. Nathaniel WHITTINGTON was called 'Long Nat' and his wife was called Peggy and was born in Scotland, coming to America when she was 12 years old....They had five children. George WHITTINGTON who went to Texas. Francis WHITTINGTON called Frank. Frances WHITTINGTON who was called Frankie..a girl Mary Ann WHITTINGTON who was called Polly Ann Katherine Elizabeth WHITTINGTON...'My mother' All of this family removed to Alabama about 1835 I think it was and stayed a short time and then removed to Mississippi to join their kinsfolk who had settled in Miss. many years before...Here in Miss. Nathanile (Long Nat) WHITTINGTON died but I do not know whether his wife, Peggy died in Miss. or not. George WHITTINGTON, the oldest child, was with his father when he died in Miss....after that, George went to Galveston, Texas and remained there for a time and then moved 60 miles up the Trinity River where my mother used to get letters from him. The other children perhaps stayed in Miss...Mother used to hear from them but I cannot recall whom they all married." That ends the narrative from the Leonardo Andrea compilation. What I have in records is the following: Liberty County, Texas 1850 Federal Census: Samuel G. MILES age 37 Farmer born S.C. Frances M. MILES age 35 born S.C. Margaret WHITTINGTON age 73 born N.C. John F. MILES age 12 born Louisiana Sophronia MILES age 7 born Louisiana (my gg grandmother) Frances E. MILES age 5 born Louisiana Monterey MILES age 1 born Louisiana Zoradia A. Jan 1860 of old age. Sick 18 days. On a schedule for which I (stupidly) neglected to write the date there appear the following: G.W. WHITTINGTON age 51 Farmer b. S.C. Lattroice S. WHITTINGTON, Jr. b. 1860 After the 1850 census, the MILES family does not appear as a unit again and the only members found living thereafter, so far, are: Margaret WHITTINGTON (on a mortality schedule) Sophronia MILES (several records) Monterrey MILES(marriage and census records) Because the aged Margaret WHITTINGTON was living with the MILES family in 1850 and, after the disappearance of the MILES family as a unit, both Sophronia MILES and Monterrey MILES appear in the household of George W. WHITTINGTON in one record or another, I feel confident of a sibling relationship between Frances MILES and George W. WHITTINGTON. Given that sibling relationship and the fact that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, I feel that the Nathaniel WHITTINGTON (of the Leonardo Andrea narrative above) is most likely the father of both Frances MILES and George W. WHITTINGTON. The largest wiggling fly in the ointment is that the narrator says Peggy was born in Scotland, but the records show Margaret born in N.C. (Then again, there's another person I'm researching who shows up on 4 different census rolls as born in 4 very different places and I know it's her because all her many children and her husband are with her on the rolls and the last name is APFELFELDER, for heaven's sake!) TO GET TO THE POINT: Does anyone out there have a scrap of information that might shed some light on the above connections? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I would like to have a copy of this oath, I have read about them and read about these oaths, but I have never seen one. Could Ephriam have been a very loyal Southern man? I am not familar with the oath but I bet there is some place on the net that we could find a copy. Ephriam Whittington, as well as all of his children except Aunt Viola who married a "Yankee" and made all of her brothers mad when she did, were all very strong loyal Southerners. Sue Whittington Hunt
Information a cousin gave me on Ephriam Whittington's uncles: Daniel Levi Whittington enlisted on 4/19/1862 for 3 yrs in Capt. James Childress's company, Company B, "Standing Pine Guards", 40th Miss. Infantry Regiment. He left the regiment from 5/17/1863 to 10/7 1863 evidently went home to help his family -- returned with his brother, John J. Whittington and John enlisted on 10/7/1863. he was on detatched duty at Raleigh, MS for 53 days and was paroled at Greensboro, N.C. on 4/28/1865 Henry Wise Whittington enlisted on 4/19/1862 in the same comapny. Rolls for Sept. & Oct. 1862 show him absent -- wounded at Camp Hollly Springs MS; from Nov - Dec, 1863 was on detached duty at Dixie Works, S.E. Green's Harness Shop at Canton, MS by order of General Pemberton. He was sick with dropsy at this time. He was paroled on 4/28/1865. John J. Whittington enlisted 10/7/1863 in Childress's Co., "Standing Pine Guards;, Rolls show him sick in Meridian Hospital in Nov. - Dec. 1863 & also in hospital July & Aug 1864. There was no record of his parole found. Andrew Jackson Whittington, enlsited in Capt. Childress's Company, Co. D, 26th Miss. Infantry Regiment under Col. Colby. He surrendered at Gainesville, Ala. 1865. Benjamin Franklin Whittington enlisted on 8/28/ 1861 in Co. F, "Crystal Springs Guards", 6th Miss. Infantry Regiment under Capt. Aaron B. Lowe and Col. J.J. Thornton. He died of disease at Bowling Green, KY on Nov. 9, 1861 Seaborn Whittington enslisted on Aug. 28, 1861 in Capt. Aaron Lowe's Co., Co. B, Crystal Springs Guards, 6th Miss. Infantry Regiment; He died on April 9, 1862 after being wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. Death occured at Corinth, MS as the army retreated south. The cousin who found this information said that although family tradition says that Thomas Whittington and James Whittington also served in the Confederate Army, he had not found proof of service yet. I would appreciate any additional information anyone may have. I have not had much time to work on my family research but I have been to the Miss. Dept. of Archives & History. I found a copy of the Stub Entries to Indents Issued in Payment of Claims Against S.C. Growing Out of the Revolution, this book was compiled by the Secretary of the Historical Commission of S.C. It includes an entry documenting issuance on July 6. 1785 of 6 pounds, 7 shillings, and one penny half penny sterling for duty done in the militia to Cornelius Whittington. I also found the DAR Patriot Index including the following Whittingtons: Burrell, Cornelius, Faddy, Francis Sr., Francis Jr., Grief, Joseph, Richard, Southey, and William. I also found several books written by Albert E. Casey and published and bound privately by the Amite Co. Historical Fund. These books are about the early settlers, etc. of Amite Co. Miss. It includes some marriage records, etc. and includes thechurch minutes of Zion Hill Baptist Church which was constituted on June 11 (didn't say which yr. but next reference is to July 1811 so I assume it was constituted in June 1811. The minutes list Cornelius Whittington and Rebecca as members constituting the church. These minutes are interesting giving insight into life back then. Members were reprimanded in the minutes for a variety of reasons including someone attending a Methodist class, drunkeness, "wrangling' (arguing), etc. In 1812, the minutes include a reference to John Whittington and wife Chloey joining by movement of letter. Bro. Thomas Mercer assisted in pronouncing the church a Church of Christ Jesus in the name of the Trinity. Bro. Mercer helped establish several Baptist churches during this time in the Amite Co. area. I would really like to go back and read more from these references -- they cannot be checked out unfortunately. I hope this information is useful to some of the other members on this list service. I'm trying to find more information on the Whittington family line that I have traced back to Baltimore, Maryland when in 1809 my ancestor Henry C. Whittington was born. I think his middle name was Coleman, but another cousin has told me it was Cowman. He married Margaret Boyer. She was born somewhere in Pennsylvania and died in Iowa. Henry C. Whittington moved on to Kansas where he died in Mankato in 1886. ===== "If we could see the past, then of course it would look different. For there was a time when every man was part of his mother, ...and... part of his grand parents. If you could see humanity spread out in time, as God sees it, it would look like one single growing thing--rather like a very complicated tree. Every individual would appear connected with every other--- C.S. Lewis, 1898-1963 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! There may be an earlier Earl Whittington, in fact I think there is. I know that the Whittingtons originated in Virginia, lived in South Carolina and Georgia and settled in Amite Co., Mississippi before some moved north to Attala Co. However, the Earl Whittington buried in Connehoma Cemetery was my grandfather's brother Ephriam Earl Whittington. He died when my father was a toddler. His wife, Aunt Valley, lived until just a few years ago. I feel sure that all of the Whittingtons are related if we are able to trace the connections. I just wish our branch had written more information down. My aunt has photos that she is not sure who the people are (from my grandmother's collection). I wish I had listened more when I was younger to my grandparents talk about their family. Sue Whittington Hunt Clinton, Miss.

Whittington Researchers, Sunday, August 6, 2000, Local newspaper article: Texas- Newton fire destroys East Texas courthouse A fire that started in the bell tower destroyed a nearly 100-year-old East Texas courthouse just as the county was preparing to repair with a historical grant. Newton County is on the Texas-Louisiana line. My great great grandfather, John G. Whittington married Ellen Susan Elliott, there January 26, 1855. John's sister, Sarah Ann Whittington, married Warren Montgomery Ferguson, in Newton, also. They were married Nov. 17, 1849. J. G. and Sarah Ann were children of John Whittington and Sarah J. Nelson. John was son of Grief. On my return trip home from Louisiana, last month I had planned to stop in a get a copy of John and Ellen's marriage license and other documents if possible. We were delayed a day and passed through on a Saturday. What a lose. P Raney Paradise, Texas
This is to all SEARCHERS: I inquired abt. a WHITTINGTON. That's OK. The lady said we couldn't be KIN, as her Whittington's came from MS not from VA. Would some of you mind letting the list know where most of the Whittington line originated. As for SPELLING. A cousin on our GARTON side passed up a lot of info because, in her own words, "I was to uppity to think I was kin to the GARTEN, GARTIN, GERTIN lines." Have you encountered the handwriting and spelling on older documents. Most are written exactly as it sounds. Always remember!!!!.....a lot of people could NOT read nor write. So, how could they spell their names? Have a wonderful week and SMILE, you may get it back. Happy hunting! I'll claim you even if you weren't from Virginia-West Virginia. I know I'm running a little late on this one, but can you give me a little information on Ephraim's uncle Henry Whittington. My husband's great gradfather was Burrell Ephraim Whittington whose father was Samuel. Samuel's father was Henry Whittington who was born about 1820 and Married Anna Bounds. They had Daniel, Isabella, Samuel, John Henrietta, William and Mahally. Any help would be appreciated. This family has really been a stumbling block for me, but I am determined to try to find something. If you can be more specific on what Infantry or Battlion these guys were in I can look in my Civil War muster rolls. I found a lot of Whittington's in there with the same first name as some of your relatives . Just can't pinpoint them at this time. Need more info if you have it like the state maybe where they where at.
Sorry, I don't know what his middle initial is. Everything I've seen is just "Earl." One thing I did notice - on the WWI Draft Registrations, his last name is spelled "Whitington." I had seen this name before when I was looking for my great-grandfather's name on this list, but dismissed it as having any significance for me as I had never heard of an Earl in our family before. I was curious, but never enough to check into it any further. That is, until I see an Earl on a census record for my great-great-grandparents. Now, he becomes more interesting. :-) I don't believe that he was the son of my great-great-grandparents,as they were quite old by then. I also know that Earl couldn't have been their grandson, as they only had one son, Walter Andrew (my great-grandfather) and I know he did not have a son named Earl. So, I'm just trying to figure out who he was. Every little thing I find, I'll post - maybe it'll all add up and someone will recognize him. I have Ephriam Whittington and Mary Strange with the following children: Thomas, James, Martha, Daniel, Nancy, John, Jackson, Seaborn, and Silas Franklin. John married Lucinda Hill and Silas married Manervia Cargill. I'm still looking in my files to see if I have anything on the other lady mentioned. Simon M. is probably Melvin Whittington, Bertie was a sister of theirs, They were Henrietta Rodgers children. She also had Tom and a daughter Dorothy. Nancy Therell's kids were Wesley Jefferson, Viola, Ephraim Earl and my grandfather Jonathan Portwood Whittington. Uncle Earl and my grandfather were probably not born yet. My grandfather was the baby and was born in 1902. Tom is buried in Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery -- grave not known exactly -- I think he may have died during a flu epidemic or something -- I remember my grandmother saying that durng the flu epidemic there were hardly enough people well enough to serve as pall bearers. I am not sure if that is when he died and my grandmother died several years ago. Sue Whittington Hunt
