    3. Allen Porter Whittington is my brick wall. He appears to have led a colorful, if not well-documented, life. His children did not like to talk about him. Allen Porter Whittington was born Jan 11, 1846 and died Jan 16, 1914 near Sentinel, OK. He is buried in the Ural cemetery in Beckham county. From his marriage to Mollie Linebarger (or Greer), he had Billy, Edward Martin, Walter Lawrence (or Lark) Whittington (b. Sep 2 1880, Tipton Co., TN), Arthur Cleveland (b. Dec 24 1885, Dyer Co., TN), and Nola Jane (b. 1888). >From his marriage to Emma Kee (or Key), he had Cammie Ugine (b. Halls, TN, 1896, male), Joe (b. ?), Cora Luella (b. Crockett Co., TN, 1898), Vernon Allen (b. Halls, TN, 1902), and Virgil Estes (b. Austin, TX, 1906). The social security death index lists Vernon as "Charles Lee Clayton" with Al Clayton and Emma Kee as parents. There are some stories that suggest that Allen Porter Whittington went by other names, too. For example, the LDS Vital Records Index shows a G. W. Bernett marrying Emma Key on Oct 29, 1893 in Dyer co., TN. Any more information on this character would be appreciated. Fred Turner [email protected]

Most probably, Mary Elizabeth Whittington Lee was named for one of her two grandmothers, very likely with the exact same name, Mary Elizabeth Whittington. If you can identify the ancestor with the Whittington surname, then you should attempt to trace her lineage back to Grief Whittington (the patriarch of practically all Louisiana Whittingtons.) 2. Hello Tom, I met the grandson of William Washington Whittington, back in July while taking pictures of headstones at the Butter Cemetery, at Forest Hill, Louisiana. Later that afternoon my husband and I visited with him at Pine Prairie. In late June there was a post at this website about the passing of Rebecca C. Whittington. That was this man's mother. His father was Boyd Whittington, b. 17 Dec. 1904 d. 25 May 1979. Boyce was Boyd's twin brother. Boyce died 26 Jul 1909 is buried at Science Hill Cemetery. The cemetery is about 6 miles southeast of Glenmora. I saw the inscription by Thomas R. Carroll dated Oct. 10, 1871. It was in purple ink. Thomas R. Carroll was the husband of Mercy Ann Whittington. They married 1865. Tom, I'm curious as to how you came about the page in the family Bible. BTW, William W. Whittington was half brother to my gggrandfather, John G. Whittington. Hope this helps. 2. General Grant was a drunkard who was lucky the war came along and gave him an opoprtunity to distinguish himself. He was certainly not a gentleman and had no honor what so ever. I have also heard that he owned slaves -- i don't know if this is true or not . It is funny how history is always rewritten by the victors in war. Sue

    1. Clayton Whittington
    2. Dear list, My Clayton Whittington was born around 1823. He married Judith Parker Turner in Crawford County in 1846. Clayton had a brother, Allen Whittington. Allen mentions Clayton in his will filed in Taylor County, GA. I have found Allen in the 1880, 1870, and 1860 Taylor County censuses. He appears to also be in the 1850 Macon County, GA census. The will also mentions a sister, Martha Adams, and a daughter, Mary Ellen Ruffin. Clayton's Civil War pension states that he was born in Taylor County. BUT, Taylor County had not been formed at the time of Clayton's birth. I suspect that he was born in Indian country that would become Taylor County. I still do not know Clayton's parents ... except that there is a 55 year old woman living with Allen in the 1850 Macon County, GA census ... Susan. Could this be their mother? By the way, Allen died in Taylor County in 1883. He is buried in the New Hope (Little Vine) Cemetery in Reynolds. Anyone have any ideas? Joey

    1. Whittington Divorce, 1833
    2. marvin hamlett
    3. I am subscribed to the Caswell Co., NC mailing list. Another subscriber has been transcribing divorces for Caswell Co. from the NC archives. I don't know the proper protocol for giving her credit here, and I don't want to do anything "out-of-bounds." Having said that, one of the divorces on the list was for an Andrew Whittington vs. Lucy Whittington in 1833 in Caswell Co., NC. I've not seen Caswell Co. NC mentioned as a source of Whittingtons before, and as far as I know this is not my line, but thought someone else might be interested to know. If I've stepped out of line by putting this information here and not mentioning the transcriber, let me know. Maybe I should've just forwarded the message to this list? Thanks, Sharon Hamlett
