Sue, My line settled in Georgia in the early 1800. They settled in the Macon (Bibb county), and Roberta (Crawford county) area. This is as far as I have been able to trace them. I think they came fron the South Carolina area, Georgia and some then went into Alabama and Miss. Area. Dear Sue, The whittingtons I am researching came from Gloucestershire and settled in N.E. PA as coal miners/workers. To my knowledge we have no connections in the South. Your Maryland connection may relate to my Whittington who was born there as well. I find the names Benjamin and Henry among the Whittingtons of my line; do these names appear in your family? I havecome across several such Benjamin Whittingtons, in the 1820 census for Calvert County, Maryland and do not know if one of them is the father of my Henry C. Whittington who was born 14 December, 1809 in Baltimore. You are the first person I have come across in the Whittington postings that has any Maryland connection. I would certainly appreciate any information on Maryland Whittingtons to help fill in the right parent for my Henry. I believe that his middle initial stands for COMAN or COWMAN or COLMAN which was probably his mother's maiden name. I have found Comans in the Baltimore census. Any suggestions would be welcome at this point. Thanks -William __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Posted on: Whittington Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Whittington/81 Surname: Whittington ------------------------- In the Leonardo Andrea compilation, there is a transcribed narrative. The informant was Levi Murray WHITTINGTON of Marlboro County, S.C. (born 2/7/1864). The recorder was his great uncle Jesse E. WHITTINGTON of Columbia, S.C. The narrative is as follows: "________ WHITTINGTON was the father of several children but I cannot recall his first name....My grandfather was his son and I recall 3 great aunts who were sisters of my grandfather. Nathaniel WHITTINGTON m. Peggy ___________ a Scotch woman Elizabeth WHITTINGTON m. Maj. Benjamin Bonicky ROGERS _________ WHITTINGTON m. a BROWN and Brownsville, Marlboro County was named for his family. Sally (I think) WHITTINGTON m. twice...first time to John IRBY and when he died she married a Mr. BETHEA. I think there were other children who went to Ala., Miss, & Texas. Nathaniel WHITTINGTON was called 'Long Nat' and his wife was called Peggy and was born in Scotland, coming to America when she was 12 years old....They had five children. George WHITTINGTON who went to Texas. Francis WHITTINGTON called Frank. Frances WHITTINGTON who was called Frankie..a girl Mary Ann WHITTINGTON who was called Polly Ann Katherine Elizabeth WHITTINGTON...'My mother' All of this family removed to Alabama about 1835 I think it was and stayed a short time and then removed to Mississippi to join their kinsfolk who had settled in Miss. many years before...Here in Miss. Nathanile (Long Nat) WHITTINGTON died but I do not know whether his wife, Peggy died in Miss. or not. George WHITTINGTON, the oldest child, was with his father when he died in Miss....after that, George went to Galveston, Texas and remained there for a time and then moved 60 miles up the Trinity River where my mother used to get letters from him. The other children perhaps stayed in Miss...Mother used to hear from them but I cannot recall whom they all married." That ends the narrative from the Leonardo Andrea compilation. What I have in records is the following: Liberty County, Texas 1850 Federal Census: Samuel G. MILES age 37 Farmer born S.C. Frances M. MILES age 35 born S.C. Margaret WHITTINGTON age 73 born N.C. John F. MILES age 12 born Louisiana Sophronia MILES age 7 born Louisiana (my gg grandmother) Frances E. MILES age 5 born Louisiana Monterey MILES age 1 born Louisiana Zoradia A. Jan 1860 of old age. Sick 18 days. On a schedule for which I (stupidly) neglected to write the date there appear the following: G.W. WHITTINGTON age 51 Farmer b. S.C. Lattroice S. Louisiana (believe this to be Monterrey MILES, Sophronia MILES's sister). Found in the Wallisville Heritage Library: Family group sheet (no author's name or sources attached) Husband's Name: George W. WHITTINGTON b. 9/23/1808(?) in S.C. d. 8/10/1883 in Turtle Bayou m. 11/22/1838 in Harrisonburg, La., Cathoula Parish his father: Nathaniel WHITTINGTON his mother's maiden name: Margaret Wife's Maiden Name: Letitia Ann MANNING b. 1820 in Louisiana Children: Eliza Jane WHITTINGTON b. 2/22/1840 in Louisiana Frank J. WHITTINGTON b. 1842 in Louisiana Margaret WHITTINGTON b. 1844 in Texas Letitia Ann WHITTINGTON b. 11/16/1848, Wallisville, Texas Georgia Ann WHITTINGTON b. 12/19/1849 Mary May WHITTINGTON b. 5/11/1857 George W. WHITTINGTON, Jr. b. 1860 After the 1850 census, the MILES family does not appear as a unit again and the only members found living thereafter, so far, are: Margaret WHITTINGTON (on a mortality schedule) Sophronia MILES (several records) Monterrey MILES(marriage and census records) Because the aged Margaret WHITTINGTON was living with the MILES family in 1850 and, after the disappearance of the MILES family as a unit, both Sophronia MILES and Monterrey MILES appear in the household of George W. WHITTINGTON in one record or another, I feel confident of a sibling relationship between Frances MILES and George W. WHITTINGTON. Given that sibling relationship and the fact that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, I feel that the Nathaniel WHITTINGTON (of the Leonardo Andrea narrative above) is most likely the father of both Frances MILES and George W. WHITTINGTON. The largest wiggling fly in the ointment is that the narrator says Peggy was born in Scotland, but the records show Margaret born in N.C. (Then again, there's another person I'm researching who shows up on 4 different census rolls as born in 4 very different places and I know it's her because all her many children and her husband are with her on the rolls and the last name is APFELFELDER, for heaven's sake!) TO GET TO THE POINT: Does anyone out there have a scrap of information that might shed some light on the above connections? And what exactly -is- the Leonardo Andrea collection?

Hi List, I have a copy of death record for Aaron Johnston from the year 1921 in Leake County, Mississippi. It states he was born Feb. 25, 1838 in Ms., that his father is Nathaniel Johnston (it was actually Johnson pre Civil War records) and mother is Mary Whittington. Whittington and the second being her neice, the daughter of John D. According to my records, Cesar Hebert, b. 1882 Newton cty TX, had two children by Leathey Ann Rutledge (1841 MS-1909) -- Cesar (Jr. ?) and Lula May Hebert. So, my statement that Dalton Whittington's wife, Lula May, was a sister to Cesar was correct. This younger Cesar was the one that married Dalton's older sister, Ida. IOW, a brother and sister from both the Whittington and the Hebert family married ... Ida & Dalton Whittington m. Cesar & Lula May Hebert, respectively. ======= Now, pressing back into the matter of whether Elisha was a wascal or wat .... first, please understand that it matters not to me whether he (or Melina) were wascals or not .... but some of this does cause problems in our understanding of our heritage .... and especially for those of us descended from John D. Whittington & Delaware Princess Dangerfield -- it'd be nice to know for certain whether Elisha is one of our forefathers or not. Elisha's first two marriages: 1. Melina Dalton m. JUL 7 1824 *1* John Dalton Whittington (1824/25 - bef SEP 1873) Harbert F. Whittington (1825 - bet 1850 and 1853) Ida Whittington (bef 1831 - ) 2. Mary Milam m. ???? I'm thinking the two John Whittingtons are one and the same, that Mabel Thompson's information was in error, and that he is my g-g-grandfather. We have proof that John Dalton Whittington is a descendant of Melina Dalton Whittington and we have census records indicating his dob 1824-1825. This would (could ??) make him the eldest child of Elisha & Melina. There is no other explanation that I can see. She was 18 in 1824. I suppose it's remotely possible that she got pregnant by someone else and Elisha then married her and gave him his surname ???? .... back to Ida .... her dob indicates she could be John's 1/2 sister by Mary Milam (or a full sister to Mabel Thompson's John). .... can anyone shed some more light on this ? thanks, Tom Cloud <[email protected]>
I have just learned about this Whittington search place, so haven't seen prior messages. I have been up against a brick wall for 25 years on my grandmother, Minerva Whittington. On the 1870 Carroll Parish, Louisiana census she is listed with her husband Benjamin Harrison Childs. Her age was 14, so she must have been born about 1855-56, in Miss. according to this census. Her mother, Laura J. Whittington (second husband Mordica Nevels) was in the home when the census was taken. Minerva died on my father's first birthday Jan. 28, 1872, so she would have only been on two census records. I have not been able to locate her on the 1860 census with her parents, so don't know her father's name nor her mother's maiden name. If anyone can help I would appreciate it so much. I found several Minerva Whittingtons in Miss. but they all married someone other than Benj. Harrison Childs. Maurine Parker - [email protected]
Tom and List Members, I love reading all abt. the Whittington's. I'm against a brick wall. Have been in touch recently with cousin's I never knew existed, in VA & WV. My thing is this...supposedly there were two STARKE Whittington's. First in Campbell, VA and then Kanawha, VA, later WV. Cousins Jean and Nancy say our G-Grandmother, Anne Elizabeth Whittington was a daughter of Starke Whittington and Sarah Medley. Then on the other hand, that is disputed and it's Starke and Rhoda/Rhody Wiley. I stick with Sarah. My question is....in all the Whittington research, has anyone found where Anne Elizabeth Whittington m. Nathan Alexander Elliott in 1863/64 in Kanawha County, WV. It's like she appeared out of nowhere and disappeared into nowhere. I have papers where she filed for pension after Nathan died in 1891. 1910 census shows her living with daughter and son-in-law in Kanawha Co., WV. If anyone has any info on this elusive lady, would you please share. Apparently no one researching can find out anything abt. here. I know there were courthouse records lost due to a fire. I thank you and would greatly appreciate any info. Tom, Enjoyed very much our brief visit last week. Just a note about Caesar Hebert and Lula May Hebert.... Leathey Ann Rutledge married Black, Seybold, Swearingen, and Ceasar Hebert...in that order. Each of her husbands died and she then married the next one. Only Hebert outlived her. Leathey Ann and _?_ Seybold had a daughter named Selma Seybold. Later, Leathey Ann and Caesar Hebert had a daughter named Lula May Hebert. My grandfather, Dalton Earnest Whittington first married Selma Seybold. When Selma died about 1900, Dalton then married Selma's half-sister, Lula May Hebert. So Lula May was, in fact, the daughter of Caesar Hebert. Sorry, but the first name of the son Dr. William C. Seybold and his wife Wilhelmina momentarily eludes me. I'm doing this from memory. Considering how many thousands of names and family stories that have come to you and your files, I'm amazed that you can recall as much as you do. Keep looking up..... RWhittington ......snip....
