Posted on: Whittington Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Whittington/10100 Surname: Whittington, Whatley, Ferguson ------------------------- The Whatley Family Reunion will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001 at the Longview Baptist Church fellowship hall, Deville, LA beginning at 9:00 am. If you are a descendant of Willis Whatley who married Sarah Jane Whittington, please come. My husband, Gordon Roy Whatley is Willis Whatley's great grandson. William Jordan (Tobey) Whatley was his grandfather. His father was Charles (Charlie) Whatley and his mother was Sarah Jane Whatley.
Hi Keith, Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner (I've had a bad migraine this week). I'm afraid there is not likely to be any connection between your W. Sussex Whittingtons and my Lancashire Whittingtons. They are about 250 miles apart. Roughly the population of Canada in between! The surname Whittington comes from the place name Whittington, which is quite common in England. There are 13 in my gazetteer: 1) Gloucestershire - about 4 miles SE of Cheltenham 2) Lancashire - 2 miles SW of Kirby Lonsdale ( I suspect this is where mine came from) 3) Shropshire - about 2 miles ENE of Oswestry 4) Staffordshire - 2 miles SE of Lichfield 5) Warwickshire - 1 miles NW of Atherstone 6) Worcestershire - about 2 miles SE of Worcester 7) Norfolk - about 9 miles NE of Brandon 8) Staffordshire - 3 miles SW of of Stourbridge 9) Derbyshire - about 2 miles N of Chesterfield 10) Whittington and Newbold - near Chesterfield 11) Northumberland - Whittington, Great; 6 miles NE of Hexham 12) Northumberland - Whittington, Little; 6 miles NE of Hexham 13) Derbyshire - Whittington, Old; in Chesterfield municipal borough I can't work out from this where your West Sussex Whittingtons are likely to have come from; they are all some way away so it's difficult to say which might be most likely. Possibly Gloucestershire is nearest. Hello Jan, Thanks for taking the time to fill me in on the "Whitington" communities . Now whether or not the name for the people came from the towns is another question but I guess you can hope....a bit too far "Liverpool" ........... yes. When you speak of 13 towns ,I can only mention that in the whole of Canada I have only found "one" place called Whittington " and that was here in our province of Ontario. It was located about 125 miles north of the " big place " Toronto , outside a small community of Orangeville , Ontario. The size was only a population of 70 -150 people when it was at it largest. I guess you could call it a "hamlet". It was started by a Robert Bowfields who purchased some property from a farmer named Thomas Whitten back in 1857 or so in the Township of Amaranth in Wellington County in Ontario. The price of the land was $25.00 ( about 10 pounds... now)The land also had a few buildings on it. Apparently Robert Bowsfield had a dream "which was inspired by the "from rags to riches story" of Dick Whittington and His Cat in the Lord Mayor of London fable. The rest of this story is blab, blab, blab. The hamlet did have a Postoffice , from October 1,1861 until 1913 but the community slowly moved away by the 1920's. Today if you find the place you'll only find a large historical marker outlining the little town's short existence. You see, England has more Whittington towns than Canada ever had. Thanks again for your letter and good luck to you with the "looking". Judy, Suggest you look at http://www.esva.net/ghotes/ for on-line info on this family and obtain and read "The Littleton Heritage" by Matthew Wise, both are excellent sources. I know nothing specifically about the movement of Whittingtons into the Shenandoah Valley. Hi Keith, I think you'll find the WHITTINGTON Archives at Rootsweb.com. I don't remember the specifics, but if you just root around the Rootsweb Home Page, you're bound to find the link. Linda
