    1. Re: Indian Connection
    2. I am descendant of Delilah Catherine Whittington b. 1856 (later married Alfred Moore Medlin in Missouri, then Levi Thompson in Oregon). We were always told that Delilah was Indian. Several branches of Delilah's offspring had the same story so I'm thinking there's something to it, but I haven't been able to prove it yet. My branch of the family thought the connection was Shoshone, but another had it as Cherokee. Based on the location of the family (southern Missouri) Cherokee is much more likely.

    2. Tom Thanks for this tidbit. It's going to hurt us folks getting those Social Security papers for proof of our family lines. Guess we'll just have to save more pennies to get each page but definately going to write senators, congressfolks and Bush to see what can be done about it. Thanks again for the information Elizabeth Edwards

    1. rise in SSN app copy fee
    2. Mary McGinnis posted this to another list .... this will be a serious bump in the road for many doing family history research. ============================================================ I have just discovered that the SSA is raising the price by 286% for the most valuable tool that genealogists request, the SS-5 form, Original Application for SS Number... It is going up from its present $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. Reference: http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm#_Toc517745431 This is untenable, since many people who do genealogy are older retired folks on fixed income... and this large increase appears to be intended to discourage the public from access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act. How can it cost $27 to receive a request, then make and mail a copy of the one page document??? ...Government is not intended to be making a profit... The $7 seems high, when you actually evaluate the task...and Researching costs more...Could it be that they have some awfully high paid clerks...and/or interns...??? Since anything can be proven by statistics, I don't believe their "analysis" but you might want to make your representatives in Congress aware of this... Senate Addresses <http://www.senate.gov/ House Addresses <http://www.house.gov/ President George W. Bush: <[email protected] Vice President Dick Cheney: <[email protected] Assistant-Secretary for HHS: <[email protected] Notify all your Genealogical buddies, too??? We all need to write... Mary McG in Tennessee May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks, May your heart be light as a song. 1. Benjamin Whittington c.1764
    2. William Rose
    3. My Benjamin Whittington was born about 1764 in Dwelling Plantation, Ann Arundel County, Maryland. In 1788 he married Cassandra Smith. I believe there were children in this marriage: Jenny, Thomas, Samuel, and Joseph. This first wife died before 1804 when Benjamin Whittington married a second time to Elizabeth Cowman. Some citations make her last name Coman. The child of this second marriage is my ancestor, Henry C. Whittington who was born 14 December, 1809 in Baltimore, Maryland. I suspect that the middle initial C stands for his mothers maiden name. Henry Whittington had been born in Maryland, but was moved to Summerfield, Noble County, Ohio, in 1817. According to family tradition, Henry was raised in the home of an uncle, largely under the care of a colored mammy. This arrangement would lead me to believe that his parents had died when he was still young. I do not know when Henry C. Whittington married, but his wife was Margaret Boyer. One child, Martha Maria Whittington, is known to have been born at Summerfield, Noble County, Ohio in 1845. Probably the earlier children of this marriage were also born here: the namesake child, Benjamin Henry Whittington, born 25 January 1835 as well as Sarah J. Whittington born in 1837, Mary E. Whittington born in 1840, John Henry Whittington born 1842, and Rebecca Ellen Whittington born in 1844. Other children born to this marriage include Margaret Emma Emily Whittington born 1849, Juliana Whittington born 1848, Amanda Whittington born 1851, and Sophia Whittington who apparently died in infancy. Henry moved his family in 1852 by steam ship to Keokuk, Iowa. My ancestor, Susan C. Whittington, was born in Riverside, Washington County, Iowa. There was one more move for Henry C. Whittington to Mankato, Jewel County, Kansas where he died 27 October 1886. Do you see any of your Whittingtons in this bit of family history? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
