I am researching Emily Whittington, born about 1824, who was apparently among the children born to John and Mary Finley Whittington in Scott Co., Ms. Emily married Harmon Runnels Guynes. "John Middleton Finley born 17 Dec. 1804, died 21 Sept. 1887, buried Damascus Cemetery, Scott County; married 16 March 1831 in Copiah County to Nancy Guynes, daughter of John and Matilda(Hall) Guynes. The 1830 census of Copiah County indicates that John Middleton Finley may have been living with Henry Hall and Mary Butler Guynes. Family tradition says that John M. Finley came into Choctaw Territory on a hunting trip in the early 1830s and admired the beauty of the land in Sipsy/Harricane Creeks area. After the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed and the Indian lands opened for settlement, he returned and purchased several parcels of land in Scott and Leake counties. John and Nancy moved from Copiah County where her mother and his family lived. They had 14 children. After the death of Nancy's brother, James Guynes, and his family moved to the area also. They both died by 1848 and four of his sons lived with the Finleys until they were grown. from "the Sharp Family with Allied Families" Mary Finley, the widow of Nicholas Finley... IN 1816 John Whitington was head of a household in Amite County, MS. Territory. He had married Mrs. Mary Finley by 1820 when that census shows an increase in the number of persons in his household." This in regard to Elizabeth, the wife of John Whittington (1676 MD-). What evidence is there of her lineage? John Whittington (1676-) married Elizabeth Whittington in 1723 in Albemarle Parish, Virginia. Many people identify her as the daughter of Joshua Whittington (ca 1722-). This is problematic in that Joshua's birthdate implies he was only 1 year old when his daughter married!. Even if one were to assume his birthdate is in error, he is unlikely to have been born any earlier than 1701 (based on his father's birthdate and assuming a typical age of 20 for the first marriage). If Joshua were born even as early as 1700 / 1701, ?John?s? Elizabeth (his daughter ??) married a scant 22 years later! If she was born when he was 11 (1712), she would have had to have married when she was 11 years old ! On the other hand, some show John's wife as being the daughter of William Whittington III and Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor (making her the first Elizabeth's aunt). The dates work better for this version but, again, what evidence is there? (This Elizabeth is also shown by some as having married a man surnamed ARDIS.) I've made the following family chart (indented by generations) to sort out my confusions: William Whittington III b. 1681/3 VA-1756 VA) marries Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor . . Elizabeth Whittington (1703 VA-) (John's wife and / or ARDIS' ??) . . other children: John, Southy, William and Esther . . Joshua Whittington (ca 1722 MD-ca 1764) . . . . . Elizabeth Whittington (ca 1749 MD/VA-) (how can she be John's wife ??)

I wonder if the Oscar Whittington you mention on the Whittington surname message board could possibly be my Great Grandfather. Do you know where he was originally from? Or maybe perhaps, if he had a previous marriage? My grandfather's name is George Ralph Whittington. He is the son of Oscar Whittington and Ella Grey. Things didn't work out between the two of them (I don't know the reason). I know that Ella remarried after that, and my grandfather, as far as I know, never saw his father again. He often wondered if he had brothers and sisters. One time he actually say someone that looked alot like him, and he wondered if they were related. If you have any information at all, please email me back. I would dearly love to find some of his family, although he has sadly passed away. Thank you so much for your time,

Ray, I believe the post you responded to was an "echo" from the Whittington bulletin board -- i.e. Alice won't see your reply here. Whittington and one of our cousin's web sites. Neither offer any references/proofs. There are many, many Grief researchers that would be absolutely delighted if this could be verified. Please, if anyone has even the slightest hint of a clue of Grief's parentage, please .... please share it ..... perhaps that little bit will be enough to help someone put all the pieces together. I was told that my Whittingtons were from the Isle of Wight. After lots of searching, and contacting the Isle of Wight family history centre we haven't been able to find the family there. There was my g.grandfather William, brothers George and Walter and sister Kezia. I was looking through the Jesus christ of latter day saints web site and found a family fitting the names and dates in London so am assuming the elderly relative who told me they were from the Isle of Wight may have got it wrong, although I'm keeping an open mind. I have been told that we had rellies in Victoria, as vaguely remember my mum getting a letter years ago from such people making inquiries. Apparently it was decided there was a connection somewhere. I've asked my elderly mum about it lately and she can't recall the letter. Anyway I'll see if I can make any more inroads. I've had my genealogy on hold for a while now as other things have taken over. Must get back into it though. Sally on the wild and wonderful West coast of Tasmania
