    1. OLIVER / WHITTINGTON in GA, AL, TX
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WHITTINGTON, OLIVER, SHELTON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TUWBAIB/660 Message Board Post: Our OLIVER line was from Georgia and Alabama. I found a William C. Oliver md Elsey WHITTINGTON 11 May 1828 Pike Co. GA Perhaps he was William Chapman OLIVER. Also found on 1850 Cherokee Co TN 23rd District page 125 Wm. OLIVER age 43 GA Aisley..............age 41 GA Wm.......................19 GA Frances..................16 GA Thaddius.................14 GA Rebecca..................12 GA Virgil........................10 GA Charles......................8 GA James.......................6 GA Sterling.....................4 GA Emma.......................2 GA Sarah Alice Oliver was born Nov. 1850 in either GA or AL, she was the youngest of 10 children. She had a sister named Rebecca, and a brother Jimmy (probably nickname for James) She also had a sister Josie, perhaps Frances or Emma had the middle name Josephine and they called her Josie. Sarah Alice's father was Chapman OLIVER and her mother was Emma WHITTINGTON. William C may stand for William Chapman. Sarah Alice's first son was James Virgil (named after her husband James Knox Polk Shelton) and her brother Virgil? The Aisley and Elsey confuse me, but wonder if it could have been Alicey and was mispelled. (longshot I know, but WHITTINGTON/OLIVER connection nevertheless. Sarah Alice also had a son named William C.. So many name similarities and number of children convince me this is our OLIVER line. Sarah Alice stated in her pension file they moved to TX in 1863 when she was 13. Is anyone researching this OLIVER/WHITTINGTON family? Please contact me. TNKS~~Dee Colvin

    3. I did not think I got a virus from rootsweb, but from a member who had emailed me privately, and later picked up a virus which was mailed to me because she had emailed me and it attached to my email address or to an old message not yet deleted. I have never had any trouble from rootsweb itself. Sorry if I left that impression.~~Dee Colvin ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 8:33 AM Subject: rootsweb lists virus free > > Dear friends and cousins, > > Many of you already know this, but some do not. > > rootsweb mailing lists only allow plain text and they do not > allow attachments. 1. familydiscovery.com, et al -- caveat emptor
    2. As you know, there are always those seeking to make a few bucks off those of us that like to trust people and believe what they say. Today, I (again) received several emails from familydiscovery.com, using the return email address of "[email protected]". One of their shameless tactics is using the terrible tragedy of September 11th as a ploy to show their sincerity and thereby get members. Though I've had no personal experience with them, there's substantial evidence that http://familydiscovery.com is a scam (fraud). (They also use the cover name "GENTRUTH".) ** (I'm not saying they are unscrupulous, but it sure looks like it. I'm offering the following information to you so you can check it out!) check out: ================================================================ http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to unanswered complaint(s)." ================================================================ http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/shame.html "At $50 a pop you can see what is already FREELY available on the internet" ================================================================ http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/promises.htm#familydiscovery "There are two other sites run by the same people as familydiscovery.com. They are:" * http://www.genseekers.com/ * www.genealogy-express.com/ ================================================================ http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/4251.asp "The prevalent offender today seems to be FamilyDiscovery.com. This company owns several other Web sites as well. They dont seem to have many satisfied customers. The genealogy message boards and newsgroups are full of reports from people who feel they have been ripped off by FamilyDiscovery.com and its affiliated sites." ================================================================ http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#familydiscovery " Many of our readers have expressed concern, outrage, and frustration at the FamilyDiscovery.com site. MyFamily.com, including RootsWeb and Ancestry, is currently investigating these concerns, and will respond as appropriate under current Fair Use Copyright and Truth in Advertising laws..." ================================================================ http://www.gensuck.com/FEATURES/familydiscovery/ "FamilyDiscovery.com has been drawing the ire of many disappointed consumers, with complaints of providing dismal service, falsifying claims, and selling access to their site without providing passwords. Is FamilyDiscovery.com walking away with your money?" ================================================================ http://hometown.aol.com/vikkigray/parkcensus.htm "...here are the names, addresses and phone of the people who defrauded you and are stealing my data:" ================================================================ I would strongly suggest everyone check out not only the rootsweb blacksheep URL, but Cyndislist's myth and fraud page: http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/promises.htm http://www.cyndislist.com/myths.htm#Consumer .................................... 1. rootsweb lists virus free
    2. Dear friends and cousins, Many of you already know this, but some do not. rootsweb mailing lists only allow plain text and they do not allow attachments. This means there is no way you can get a virus, worm or trojan (horse), etc through any email you receive from one of their lists. Please see their explanation at: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus "RootsWeb's mailing lists are filtered and attachments are removed. A virus that is distributed as an attachment will not reach you through a RootsWeb mailing list." The current macro virus fad is (innocently) spread by people using Outlook. Look at the header of the email you receive -- at the "XMAILER" field If you see something like this: =========================================================== .... X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 =========================================================== be careful .... it is only by those emails (using Outlook) can you receive a macro virus. If you are not using Outlook -- and don't open any attachments -- you won't get the macro viruses (or any other virus, for that matter). Tom Cloud <[email protected]>
