Cornelius and Rebecca were married in Virginia in 1774 before they began their trek that ended in Mississippi. The 1829 date is incorrect or may belong to another individual. Author: gramin1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.whittington/1379.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I did a little online research and came up with this: Your father was Bernard Y. Whittington, born July 2, 1924, in Arroyo, Hancock County, West Virginia, son of Arnold Eugene Whittington and Laura Odessa Pritchard. This information is from the following scanned marriage records: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=11998916&Type=Marriage [scroll to the right] and http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=11953016&Type=Marriage [scroll to the right] Laura Odessa Pritchard Whittington married (2nd) Robert Earl Potts on October 15, 1927 in Beaver, Beaver Co., PA, according to this webpage: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lindak1948&id=I0398 I don't know whether your grandfather was deceased by 1927 or whether he and your grandmother had divorced. This page also gives details about your grandmother's ancestry; I can't vouch for their accuracy. Arnold Eugene Whittington claims to have been born in "Doubal" (= Duval?) County, Florida, but I'm not sure how seriously to take this. So for example in the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Bernard Whittington's father's place of birth is given as West Virginia. There were a couple of Arnold Whittingtons born in southern West Virginia between 1900 and 1910, including an Arnold E. Whittington (born 1905 in Putnam County, later lived in Kanawha County and served in WWII) whose marriage record is here: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=11523407&Type=Marriage Not sure whether he's your grandfather Arnold Eugene Whittington though... The earliest census record I found was 1880 in Leake Couny, MS. Manson was 17 and living with his grandmother, Malisyd (as it appeared in census record) Wittington and his female cousin Dendy or Denby. I am wondering if that was actually the cousin's last name. Malisy was born in VA. No one knows the name of either of Manson's parents, but family lore says he was white and Choctaw. Do any of these names sound familiar? Manson owned a farm near Carthage, MS. I would love to know more about Malisy. I am assuming Manson's mother was Malisy's daughter. I'm interested in other information about Maria, but I'd really like to know more about her first husband since our family has precious little knowledge beyond John E. which I guess was "Elbridge."
