Since I am unable to find anything on the internet to explain this, nor in any of my reference materials, I am hoping that one of the wise people on the Whitney list can solve this dilemma for me. I am stumped by the notation regarding one of my ancestors in a family book. It was stated that in 1667 he was a "householder". He would have been 19 and unmarried at the time. This leads me to believe that this might be some type of occupation rather than a statement of the fact that at such a young age he owned a home. His father was a carpenter and he was the oldest son, so possibly this has something to do with some type of carpentry. However his father also owned a large amount of land in the town and certainly may have given some to the son although at that young an age it just doesn't seem likely. Any help would be appreciated.
