    3. I found my great, great, great, great grandmother and grandfather's graves in Pittsfield, OH. Milton Whitney and Lydia Cleveland. I took pics of their graves and the other Whitneys. Is there a place to post Whitney gravesites? Hazel K. [p. 80] I didn't see a marriage in Dorchester for Jacob and Ann Maria, so I searched the combined index and found their marriage in Cambridge, Massachusetts: Jacob S. of Milton, and Ann Maria Cannell, Dec. 25, 1838. Cambridge There appears to have been just one Whitney family in Milton at the time - that of Moses Whitney: 1840 U.S. Census, Milton, Norfolk, MA, p. 348 Moses Whitney 0000110010000-0010121000000 1830 U.S. Census, Milton, Norfolk Co., MA, p. 125 Moses Whitney 0002200100000-0012211000000 (Ancestry has him indexed under Whiting, in error) 1820 U.S. Census, Milton, Norfolk Co., MA, p. 125 Moses Whitney 110211-01310 4 in Manufacturing 1810 U.S. Census, Milton, Norfolk Co., MA, p. 632 Moses Whitney 21220-11111 1800 U.S. Census, Dorchester, Norfolk Co., MA, p. 118 Whitney Moses 11100-10100 I have identified this Moses Whitney as being GEN. MOSES WHITNEY (Jacob, Jonas, Eleazer, Thomas, John), b. Jan 2,1775; m. Apr 14, 1797, at Milton, Rebecca DUNBAR. More can be found in the Pierce transcript on the WRG website at http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/pierce/p191-195.htm#P1212 Note that Pierce shows this Moses as having a son named WARREN JACOB who was born in 1811, married (no mention of a name), and died in 1891. Was our Jacob S. Whitney the same as Warren Jacob Whitney? Were there two children - Warren Jacob and Jacob S.? Did Pierce confuse these two? The Milton vital record transcriptions clearly show the following: Hannah, d. Moses and Rebeckah, Nov. 19, 1797. Moses, s. Moses and Rebecca, Oct. 7, 1802. Mary, d. Moses and Rebecca, Apr. 17, 1805. Seth Dunbar, s. Moses and Rebecca, Sept. 13, 1807. Jacob Warren, s. Moses and Rebecca, Jan. 2, 1811. I wonder if perhaps the birth in 1811 was a set of twins, named Jacob and Warren? In any event, I think this Moses family is a good lead, but more research is needed. *IF* this Moses line turns out to be correct, then your line would be as follows: Gordon Wesley-10, Albert Edward-9, Edward F.-8, Jacob S.-7, Moses-6, Jacob-5, Jonas-4, Eleazer-3, Thomas-2, John-1 Whitney If anyone can add to the above information or sees any flaws in my research, please speak up! I hope this helps! WHITNEY died in Boston in 1894, according to the index to Massachusetts vital records 1841-1910 (volume 447, page 71), and Warren J. WHITNEY died in Boston in 1891 (volume 420, page 82), so they must be separate people. Furthermore, the 1810 census record of Gen. Moses WHITNEY's family shows 2 males under 10, and they would be Moses, Jr., and Seth Dunbar, who would have been 7 and 2, leaving no place for Jacob S. if he had been born before that census date. The ages he gave in the censuses of 1850 through 1880 imply a birth before the census date in 1810. In addition, the censuses say he was born in Maine (or New Hampshire), and his parents were born in Maine (according to the 1880 census) so Gen. Moses WHITNEY could not be his father. I suggest writing to obtain the death record of Jacob S. WHITNEY in 1894 in Boston to get the names of his parents. I found Jacob S. WHITNEY in the Boston city directories of 1870, 1872, 1875, 1885, and 1890: . Do our Maine WHITNEY experts have anything to contribute about the ancestry of Jacob S. WHITNEY, born about 1809 in Maine, parents born in Maine? Regards, Robert Robert L.
