All, We have a true hero in the Whitney family! From <http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/mohciv2.htm>, Civil War recipients of the Medal of Honor (incorrectly called the Congressional Medal of Honor): @#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@ WHITNEY, WILLIAM G. Rank and organization: Sergeant, Company B, 11th Michigan Infantry. Place and date: At Chickamauga, Ga., 20 September 1863. Entered service at: Quincy, Mich. Born. 13 December 1840, Allen, Mich. Date of issue: 21 October 1895. Citation: As the enemy were about to charge, this officer went outside the temporary Union works among the dead and wounded enemy and at great exposure to himself cut off and removed their cartridge boxes, bringing the same within the Union lines, the ammunition being used with good effect in again repulsing the attack. @#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@ According the IGI, William G. Whitney was son of Jonathan and Ann (Garrett) Whitney I believe that this was William G.-8 Whitney [Jonathan-7, Ami-6, Jonathan-5, Jonathan-4, Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1], since his father lived in Allen, Mich., and his brother Ami-8 lived in Quincy, MI. See <http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/pierce/p231-235.htm#C3602> and <http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/bibles/ami_anna.html>. For a photograph of his tombstone in Allen, MI, see <http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/whitney_william.html>. He is listed as William S. Whitney in the 1880 Census, for which see <http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/census/1880/extracts/mi.htm#111>. Regards, Robert Mr. Robert L. Robert, Willaim G. Whitney was granted a Civil War pension. The file contains not only an invalid's claim, but a widow's claim. If lucky, it may also contain a copy of his Medal of Honor citation. If all goes well, I will make a trip to the National Archives this week. The Archives has undergone a magnificent renovation, and the research facilities are now top notch. The only thing lacking is top notch photo copying machines. They seem to have deteriorated badly. However, if I can get a good copy of the citation, if it is indeed in there, I will. Perhaps it could be posted on the web site. Keep your fingers crossed. Ken Whitney Silver Spring, MD ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert L.
