I can't identify Joshua and Sarah (MOORE) WHITNEY above from my records. I did find Joshua WHITNEY in the 1790 Census of Wendell, Cheshire Co., NH, page 027, 01-04-04-00-00 (1 male 16+, 4 males 0-15, and 4 females). Apparently it was he who appears in Cheshire Co., NH, page 327, 20310-23101-00 (2 males 0-9, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 2 females 0-9, 3 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 45+). It seems to be him in Bridgwater, Addison Co., VT, in 1810, page 491. I also found him in Major General Carleton Edward Fisher and Sue Gray Fisher _Soldiers, Sailors, and Patriots of the Revolutionary War - Vermont_ (Camden, Maine: Picton Press, 19??): "WHITNEY, Joshua, NH; b c 1746; r Wendell, NH; Capt Emery's co 1776; d Bridgewater 1816; m Sarah; 15, 14:430; B-10, p 24." In the _Whitney Whistler_, vol. 1, no. 4, I find: "Joshua Whitney, born in 1746, died in Bridgewater, Vermont in 1816. He married Sally Haynes in 1777, who was born in 1759, and died in 1833. Before they moved to Vermont, they lived in Wendell (Sunapee), N. H." I don't think he was Joshua-5 WHITNEY [Joshua-4, William-3, Joshua-2, John-1], who seems to be the one who married in 1770 Anna ASHLEY and lived in Canaan, Litchfield Co., CT. That fellow appears in the 1790 Census in Litchfield Co., CT, so is not the one in Wendell in 1790. In the _Whitney Whistler_, vol. 4, no. 3, I find: "JOSHUA WHITNEY OF WENDELL, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND BRIDGEWATER, VERMONT Joshua Whitney went from Wendell, New Hampshire to Bridgewater, Vermont in 1800. He died there 1 Dee 1816, in his 70th year. He would have been born about 1746. He made his first land purchase in Wendell in 1778, according to the records there. His occupation was that of a cooper. He served one year and eight months in the Revolutionary War and reached the rank of Lieutenant...although there seems to be no service record found for him. His cousin Joshua of Henniker, New Hampshire also served as a Sergeant. In 1781 Joshua and William Whitney requested the town name be changed from Saville to Wendell. Later Wendell became Sunapee, which is the name by which it is now known. Joshua Whitney, born in 1746/7, married Sarah, possibly Haynes about 1776, their first child being born May 1779, in Bridgewater, Vermont. Children: Sally, born 5 May 1779 married Seth Brannock Ruth, born 20 Oct 1789 married Enoch Eastman, and died 1846 Elizabeth, born 26 August 1782 married Cyrus Carpenter[1] and James Kelly[2] John, born 20 Sept 1784 Icahabod, born 4 Dec 1785 Haynes, born 7 Dec 1787 (Possibly his mother s name) William, born 10 Sept 1789 married Betsey Rand 1808 Abigail, born 16 August 1791 married Eliphalet Angell 1828 Polly, born 27 August 1793 Hannah, born 26 Sept 1795 Mary Joshua (We note here that the first one could not have been born in Bridgewater, Vermont, as he did not move there until 1800. The last two children may have been born in Vermont) Editor. Joshua Whitney, son of the above, married 23 April 1820 Persis Moore at Bridgewater, Vermont." The "cousin" Joshua WHITNEY of Henniker, NH, was Joshua-5 WHITNEY [Eleazer-4, Eleazer-3, Thomas-2, John-1], who married Betty WOOD. I know nothing further of him. More interesting is the William WHITNEY who was in Wendell with Joshua in 1781. He could be a brother or a father of Joshua. This is a less common given name in the WHITNEY family. I found a family which seems a likely spot to place this Joshua WHITNEY. He might be (this is a pure guess!) an unrecorded son of William-4 and Mary (WHITMORE) WHITNEY (William-3, Joshua-2, John-1), of Killingly, CT. That couple had just three recorded children: William-5 (1725), Thomas-5 (1728), and Abigail (1741). Pierce says that William-4 lived in Canaan, CT, after 1753. We don't know what happened to him after that. The son William-5 WHITNEY seems to be the one who married Archoucher DUTCHER in 1747 in Salisbury, CT, both being of Canaan. The last we know of him was birth of a daughter in 1766 in Salisbury. Either William-4 or William-5 could be the resident of Wendell in 1781 cited above, and Joshua could be an unrecorded son of William-4. I suggest that the son John WHITNEY, above, may have been John Calvin WHITNEY, and later known as Calvin. He would be named after the famous John CALVIN, founder of the Presbyterian church. That would give you brothers Calvin and Haynes, for which you have been searching. These clues (they are nothing more) may lead to records which confirm or refute the statements made above. Good luck in your search! Regards, Robert Mr. Robert L. Ward RLWard AT WhitneyGen DOT org http://www.WhitneyGen.org/home.html
