Has anyone found anything showing that Joshua Whitney, born abt 1712 in Medfield, MA was married to Phoebe Day? I know his wife was Phoebe. Also, who is the Nathaniel Whitney that Hannah Whitney (born 1745 in Uxbridge, MA) married? Hope this makes sense. Janet Whitney Duffield
Hello Janet It is interesting to me that you bring up Joshua Whitney and Phoebe Day. I was wondering about that just the other day. I note that in Robert Ward's six-generation John and Eleanor database, he mentions that Joshua of Medfield could be the one who married Phoebe Day, since he did marry a Phoebe. I wondered to myself just how many Joshua Whitneys there were in those days who could be a candidate to have married Phoebe. Also, How many Joshuas back then did actually marry a Phoebe. Maybe those in the group with expertise in Massachusetts can help enlighten us. Several years--like 20!-- ago I corresponded with a gentleman (Kenneth Jacobs) in Florida in search of my elusive Calvin. I am going to quote from his letter because he has a Joshua in his line that I have never quite been able to figure out where he came from. Anyway, here it is: "My ancestor of the era you mention was Joshua (5) Whitney who married Sarah Moore of Sudbury, Ma. He was a Conn. Lt. in the Revolutionary War and at that time lived in Wendell, N.H. (later called Sunapee.) All of their children except the last two were born in Wendell. His second daughter, Ruth, was my next Whitney ancestor. She married Enoch Eastman in 1799 and, of course, my lineage then carries down in the Eastman line to my great grandmother who was Sarah Eastman. Joshua also had a son named Haynes, b. 7 Dec 1787 in Wendell, and he was about 13 when the family moved to Bridgewater Corners, VT, a little village west of Woodstock, which, in turn is a bit north of Hartland' For a long time I was puzzled over the fact that Jonathan, in Hartland, also had a son named Haynes, born a little after the above Haynes. This troubled me for some time until I learned that Sarah (Moore) Whitney's mother or grandmother was Mary Haynes of Sudbury. I do not know what Haynes connection Jonathan's Family may have had. (Marion's comment: It is doubtful that there ever was a Haynes in Jonathan's family.) Joshua (above) died in 1816 in Bridgewater and many of his children (as adults, of course) settled in Orleans Co., NY, specifically Murray and Shelby townships. Whether or not Haynes was among them I have not learned. But inasmuch as there seems to be controversy over which family had a son Haynes, I have wondered if Joshua's Haynes may have gone to Maine with Jonathan's Calvin. (Marion's comment: Jonathan's Calvin was not the Calvin who went to Maine. That Calvin ended up in Wisconsin.) I can assure you, however, that Joshua did not have a son named Calvin. (Marion's comment: But Calvin in Maine had a son named Joshua!!!)" Maybe this will help someone. Haynes is such an odd name that I have often wondered if indeed I needed to pursue this lineage a little closer. Can anyone identify THIS Joshua? Marion Whitney Martin
