There were several Joshua WHITNEY individuals alive and old enough to marry Phebe DAY, daughter of Joseph and Patience (HILTON) DAY, in 1736/7, in Wells, ME: 1. Joshua-3 WHITNEY [Joshua-2, John-1] (1665-1753); m.(1) c1690, Mary ----- (c1666-1751); m.(2) 1751, Sarah (-----)(WARREN) FELLOWS (c1668-1759). Res. Groton, MA, and Plainfield, CT. 2. Joshua-3 WHITNEY [Benjamin-2, John-1] (1687-1771); m. 1709, Hannah ROCKETT (1691-1772). Res. Medfield, Mendon, Uxbridge, Woodstock (CT), Palmer, and Ware, MA. 3. Joshua-4 WHITNEY [Richard-3, Richard-2, John-1] (c1708-1787); m.(1) ca 1730, Zerviah ----- (c1712-a1749); m.(2) 1762, Azubah (BURT) FARNSWORTH (1711-); m.(3) 1764, Rebecca (WINSHIP) WHITNEY (1717-1769); m.(4) after 1769, Mary ----- (c1692/98-1787). Res. Stow and Boxborough, MA. 4. Joshua-4 WHITNEY [Joshua-3, Benjamin-2, John-1] (1712-b1765); m. before Feb 1738/9, Phebe ----- (s1714-a1756). Res. Uxbridge and Medway, MA. 5. Joshua-4 WHITNEY [William-3, Joshua-2, John-1] (1714-b1744); m. before 1737, Anna BLODGETT (1714-a1745). Res. Tolland and Preston, CT. 6. Joshua-5 WHITNEY [Nathaniel-4, Nathaniel-3, John-2, John-1] (1714-1786); m. 1740, Mehitable WILSON (1719-1785). Res. Spencer and Stockbridge, MA. 7. Joshua-4 WHITNEY [David-3, Joshua-2, John-1] (1718-1761); m. 1743, Amy BLODGETT (1724-1819). Res. Plainfield, Canaan, and Norfolk, CT. These are all that I can find in my records. None of them have a close connection to Maine. As you can see, #1, 2, 3, and 5 all had other wives living with them in 1737. #6 and 7 could have had a brief marriage to Phebe DAY, if she died soon, so that they could marry again to their known wives, but there is no evidence to support that theory. Furthermore, only one of them, #4, married a Phebe. Their marriage record has not been found, and her maiden name is unknown. The above process of elimination leads me to think that it was #4 who married Phebe DAY in Wells, ME. Certainly the chronology is perfect. Furthermore, #4 had a first cousin Nathaniel-4 WHITNEY, Jr., who married Phebe's sister Hannah DAY in 1734 in Wells, ME. #4 could have met Phebe while visiting his uncle Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY, Sr., in Wells, as that cousin's sister-in-law. Furthermore, #4 and his wife named their first son Joshua (after himself and his father) and their second son Joseph (Phebe DAY's father's given name), so there is also onomastic support for this identification. Unfortunately, while this makes a decent circumstantial case, we have no proof! It seems possible that the settlement of the estate of Joseph DAY or other members of the DAY family might establish the connection between his daughter Phebe DAY's husband Joshua WHITNEY and the rest of the WHITNEY family of New England. We have found nothing in the estate of Joshua-4 WHITNEY (#4) to connect him to Maine or the DAY family. See <http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/holman.html>. We do not know what became of his widow Phebe after her fourth marriage to Henry HUCKER/HOOKER (her other husbands were Caleb PARTRIDGE and Joseph ANKERS). I hope this clarifies the situation. Hello Robert, Thanks for the update on this continuing problem. I guess no headway has been made with proof of this relationship. Ken Whitney ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert L.
