What's New on the Whitney Research Group Website? * The Census Identification Project is making progress. See the recent update email for status. * Website Members Jeanne Neilon and her cousin Tara have been adding family group pages for their Whitney branch as well as for other early families in South Carolina. With their help, we're starting to get a clearer view of these early southern families. * Tim Doyle has started to add family group pages for the descendants of Samuel Whitney of Bermuda, whose descendants emigrated to the American south. Fifteen family group pages, dating from 1615 to 1860 have been added. * Robert Ward continues to add new family group pages for descendants of immigrants John and Henry Whitney as he continues his work on the Census Project. * Website member "Chrissij" has been adding family group pages for her family, the descendants of William and Sarah (Compton) Whitney of Kentucky and Louisiana. * A new website member named "Merrymaiden" signed up for a free website account - she is a descendant of the Whitneys of Yardley Hastings, England who emigrated to Australia. * There are now nearly 9,000 pages of content on the website and we've had over 960,000 page views! How Can You Help / Get Involved? * Sign up for a free account on the WRG website at http://wiki.whitneygen.org * Add your lineage to your user page - Robert and I will do all we can to link you in if you take the time to do this! * Consider helping us extract census records, or create new family group pages for your branch of the family. * Are you intimidated by the website? Do you need a little handholding? I will be happy to spend time with you on the telephone if you would like a personalized tour. Contact me if you're interested. * JUMP IN! The website is DESIGNED to be edited by YOU. We need your help - Robert and I cannot do it alone. There is NOTHING that you can do on the website to "screw it up". Robert and I review every edit made and make corrections if needed. We can even "back out" any change if needed, so there should be nothing to hold you back from giving it a try. Why is it Important to Create Family Group Pages? To combine all of the information known about each family grouping. Having the information on the website allows us to link from the family group page to the supporting source material in our archives, and also link from the archives to the family group pages. This allows us to see which records have been accounted for, and which need to be investigated further. Did You Know? Did you know you can have the WRG website email you when a page is edited by someone else? It's simple, and a great way to keep informed of what most interests you! 1. If you haven't already done so, sign up for a free account on the website at http://wiki.whitneygen.org 2. Go to "preferences" (link is in the upper right-hand corner). 3. Verify your email address is valid. 4. Make sure the checkbox "E-mail me on page changes" is checked. 5. Select the "Save" button. 6. For any page you want to be emailed about, click the "Watch" tab at the top. Whenever any of the pages you have on your watch list are changed by someone other than yourself, you'll get an email. To protect you against receiving a barrage of emails, you'll only get notification one per page until you view the page - then the 'trigger' is reset.
