Edwin James Whitney To: tdoyle@doit.com CC: Jan Conti <sourcebeyond@yahoo.com> Hi Tim, I found your name on the Internet as a contact for WRG . I was doing some research on the owner of two diaries; Laird & Lee's Diary and Time-Saver, Registered U.S.PAT.OFF. The years are 1907 and 1912. The owner is YALE B WHITNEY, Born Jan 22, 1884. He is the son of Rev. Edwin James Whitney. Edwin was the son of Alvin Whitney, born in 1803, and his wife Betsy Cook. Edwin at age 27 yrs. received into the Genessee Conference of the M.E. Church as a probationer in the Traveling Connection as Preacher, First Circuit 1874. I believe Yale may have also been a Preacher or some kind of political figure. His two diaries document that he traveled daily to cities around the U.S. to welcome hundreds of people at a time. He was also in town fairs. In the front of 1912 Diary are two photos. One of a child and another of a woman. His address was 183 Vassar St, Rochester, NY. His weight was 175 lbs.; 5'11 1/2" tall, light commplexion and age 28 years old in 1912. There is allot of writing and travel locations indicated in these journals as well as Cash Account information e.g., Received and Paid. I am interested in selling these two diaries. Can you recommend someone I can contact? I purchased these diaries in 1984 in Monterey, County in California. I found out that Yale B. Whitney was one of four Whitney brothers who formed the Whitney Brothers Quartet, a barbershop quartet. The others were Alvin M., Edwin M., and William F. Whitney. See <http://www.harmonize.com/swdroundup/page30a.html>. Those are the names of his three older brothers. No doubt his touring and his financial transactions were part of that activity. He died in Carmel, CA, in May 1977. Possibly one could find an obituary for him which would give more information. See also <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyorlea2/19261113.htm>, which mentions him. Thanks for sending your e-mail to the Whitney-L mailing list. I would not have been aware of the Whitney Brothers Quartet otherwise, and I find it very interesting. I am sitting here listening to one of their recordings made on wax cylinders and digitized by the UC Santa Barbara Library. See <http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/search.php?queryType=@attr+1=1020&num=1&query=cylinder1739>. Cool! You can find more by Googling "Whitney Brothers Quartet". By doing this, I found a picture of the four of them together and separately at <http://sdrcdata.lib.uiowa.edu/libsdrc/details.jsp?id=/whitneybros/1&page=1>. Regards, Robert Mr. Robert L.
