At first reading this sounds impressive. However, every generation that we go back increases exponentially the number of individuals with whom we share ancestors. In an article that appeared in "American Scientist" vol. 91, no. 2, pp. 158-165 (Mar-Apr. 2003): "Genealogy in the Era of Genomics," by Susanna C. Manrubia, Bernard Derrida & Damian H. Zanette the authors observe: "In a population of 1,000 people who choose their mates at random, 10 generations are normally enough to guarantee that any two people have some ancestor in common. Perhaps even more startlingly, 18 generations normally guarantee that any two people in such a population have __all__ their ancestors in common."
