    3. Bonnie, I rechecked the 1850 census record -- The place of birth may very well be New York. I mistook it for the enumerator's squiggle for "ditto" and when I checked page 185 the last place of birth given was Conn. I would guess that she was a housekeeper for them, although it doesn't provide any occupational information. The 1850 census lists 2 other Whitneys in Stamford -- Joseph age 60 something, a laborer in another household and Margaret, age 15, born NY, living (working?) in the household of Andrew Cowan (Cowen), wife Emeline, children Hector and John. As for the 1840 -- this census lists only the head of household by name and then tallies the number of males and females falling within certain age groups. There is no female of the age Elizabeth would have been in this household. Keep looking...she may turn up someday! I'm not familiar with NY records so I can't advise you where to look now.
