    3. Whitney DNA Project Status Update We currently have 44 Project participants: * 29 descendants of the American immigrant John Whitney, son of Thomas Whitney of Lambeth Marsh, Surrey, England. * 3 descendants of the American immigrant Henry Whitney. * 1 descendant of the American immigrant Samuel Whitney of Bermuda. * 1 descendant of Richard Whitney of Morton Say, Shropshire, England. * 1 descendant of Charles Whitney of Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire, England. * 1 descendant of William Underwood Whitney of Hereford, England. * 6 individuals who have unique results and appear to not be related to others currently in the study. * 2 individuals whose results have not yet come in. Fund Status * Seven individuals have made donations totaling $235.00! * Of this, we used $152.00 for the testing of a descendant of Charles Whitney of Yardley Hastings, England. * We have also allocated funds to extend the test for the descendant of Samuel Whitney from 12 to 25 markers. * If you would like to help further this project financially, please consider making a donation. Simply go to the following website and specify Whitney as the project. http://www.familytreedna.com/contribution.html New Chart I have uploaded a new chart, called a Cladogram, which allows us to visualize the possible interconnectedness of the different Whitney branches. See http://wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg/index.php/DNA to view this new interesting chart. One interesting result of viewing this chart is that Henry Whitney's descendants most closely match the descendant of William Underwood Whitney of Hereford. If you are a descendant of John Whitney with no differences from the standard "signature" DNA profile, then your kit number is not listed on the chart and you are included in the large yellow circle on the chart. Yardley Hastings Branch While searching the internet, I found a tree listing a Whitney family currently residing in Australia. It seems as though this family descended from a man named Alfred Whitney, from Leicester, England who emigrated to Australia in 1828. His father was Charles Whitney, born in Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire, England. I contacted the author of this online tree and explained our DNA project to him. He agreed that having one of Alfred's descendants included in the project could benefit our understanding of the overall Whitney family and set out to track down a cousin who was a male descendant of Alfred. This cousin agreed to participate, and we used funds submitted to the project. These results show 4 markers different from the American immigrant John Whitney (out of 25 tested), indicating a possible relationship. Very interesting! Norton Canon Branch I have also tracked down a descendant of the wealthy Norton Canon branch of the Whitneys. They were descendants of George Whitney, Gent. Of Norton Canon, Herefordshire, just nine miles east of Whitney on Wye! One of George Whitney's GG-Grandson's was James Whitney, Esq., a landed proprietor in Paddington, Middlesex, who in 1851 supported two visitors, three young scholars, a governess, and four house servants. To me this indicates a very well off family and could very possibly be direct descendants of the Whitneys of Whitney. James Whitney's son John Whitney immigrated to New Zealand where he was a very prominent businessman. I am currently working with a descendant of this Norton Canon family to attempt to locate a male Whitney who would be willing to participate in the DNA study. Stay tuned! Relatedness of Branches So which branches are related, and which aren't? The following statements are probable based upon the current DNA results: * American immigrant John Whitney was not related to American immigrant Henry Whitney. * American immigrant John Whitney was most likely not related to American immigrant Samuel Whitney. * American immigrant Henry Whitney was perhaps, but most likely not related to American immigrant Samuel Whitney. * William Underwood Whitney of Hereford was not related to American immigrant John Whitney, and was probably not related to either Henry or Samuel Whitney. * Richard Whitney of Morton Say, Shropshire was perhaps distantly related to John Whitney, but appears not related to Henry or Samuel. * Charles Whitney of Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire was perhaps distantly related to John Whitney, but appears not related to Henry or Samuel. John Whitney Branch Of the 29 participants, over half do not know how they connect with John. In order to help, we simply need more people who know how they descend from John to get tested, and those that have already have been tested to extend their number of markers. This will allow us to identify differences in the branches, allowing those who cannot yet connect to narrow down their research. If you descend from John, PLEASE consider being tested. For example, we currently have NO DESCENDANTS of John's sons Jonathan and Joshua in the study. Henry Whitney Branch We currently have just three participants, and we need more. Are you a descendant of Henry? Samuel Whitney Branch We have just one descendant in the Study and we would love to have more. In addition, extending the number of markers for this one individual is probably the highest priority for this project, and we have allocated funds to do so.
