    1. Re: [WHITNEY] Location Help
    2. The Old "Ninety Six" District was one of the 7 Judicial Districts created by the State of South Carolina, in 1769. Up to the 1760's, South Carolina was served by one court located in Charleston. The constant influx of new immigrants and settlers pushing further into the back country looking for settlement lands required that the court system be expanded statewide to better serve the people. The Cherokee land cessions of 1777 (Western tip of South Carolins) were added to the Ninety Six. The 96th was huge covering the present day counties of Abbeville, Greenwood, McCormick, Edgefield, Aiken, Saluda, Laurens, Newberry, Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union. The South Carolina Judicial Districts were abolished in 1798. Jeanne Neilon ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
