Campton, Illinois is in Kane County. Chicago Lawn is a neighborhood in the southwest part of the City of Chicago, annexed in 1889. Coloma, Illinois is a township in Whiteside County. Hubbard Woods/Winnetka, Illinois a suburb of Chicago, north of the city on Lake Michigan. Kendall, Illinois is a township in Kendall County. Shockoken, Illinois don't know but there is a Shokonon in Henderson County. West Troy, Illinois don't know but there is a Troy in Madison County and a community known as Shorewood in Will County today was at one time known as Troy or West Troy. Ruby City, Washington is a well known ghost town. It was founded around 1888 in Okanogan County because of discoveries of silver ore. Ruby was also known as the Queen City of the Okanogan County and with the mining boom became a lively and well known mining camp. Tim: I'll try to assist you on the Illinois communities. Big Grove, Illinois — It is a township in Kendall County, IL, southwest of Chicago; it's also one of earliest settlements in Champaign County, IL, which is in the central part of the state. Don't know which one you might be hunting for. Burnside Crossing, IL — I believe it is in Chestnut Township, in Knox County. Campton, IL — Today, I believe the community by this name is known as Wasco in Campton Township in Kane County, west of Chicago. My great- great-grandfather Joseph and his brother John Whitney homesteaded here in 1835 coming from Java Village, NY. The Whitney Cemetery is located in what is known today as Wasco and came off a portion of John Whitney's 1,000 acre farm. Chicago Lawn, IL — I believe this is a community within the city of Chicago located in Cook County east of Midway Airport. Coloma, IL — Not sure, but there are several townships in Illinois with this name. Would probably need to know the context this shows up in to make a better determination. There is also a Colona, IL in Rock Island County in case the name is spelled wrong. It appears that quite often areas were named that became a township instead of a community, probably because of the way people settled prior to establishing a village. Gardiner, IL — I don't find a Gardiner, but do find a Gardner this is in Grundy County southwest of Chicago. Again, Gardiner may be an early name for a community that no longer exists or the name of a township however I don't find a township in IL by that name. Hillsborough, IL — I believe this is spelled Hillsboro. It is in Montgomery County. My aunt was born there. It's the home of the Red Rooster Inn (I was sure you needed a little trivia.) Hubbard Woods/Winnetka, IL —Winnetka is a Chicago suburb north along Lake Michigan in Cook County. Hubbard Woods is another suburb or community area just north and west of Winnetka. Kendall, IL — This is a county southwest of Chicago. Communities in it include Oswego, Plano and Yorkville as well as several other smaller ones. Today it is growing at an unbelievable rate as suburbia marches west from Chicago. Mission Point, IL — You've got me on this one. Their is a resort by that name near Chicago, so it may be an early settlement near Chicago that was swallowed as the city grew. Perhaps someone from Chicago can tell you. Shockoken, IL — Have no idea, however, when I Googled it, our wikki site came up showing it in Hancock County (Nauvoo, IL), and Henderson County. Both border the Mississippi River with Hancock County just below Henderson so Shockoken could have been an area in both counties. Also, many of these counties were formed from larger counties. Someone from one or both counties can probably answer your question. West Troy, IL — Would expect this to be an area west of Troy, IL, which is straight east of St. Louis. It is in Madison County. Tim et al,. Some of these places are close to my heart. Here are some clarifications. New York: "Howeoge" is probably Honeoye in the Town of Richmond, Ontario Co., and on Honeoye Lake. There is also a Honeoye Falls in the Town of Mendon in Monroe Co. a few miles to the north. Other names should be spelled Corinth, Fredonia, Skaneateles, Sherburne, and Nineveh-- the last in Whitney-founded Broome Co., and the home of the late "B.C." cartoonist Johnny Hart. Michigan: East Saginaw appears to have been swallowed up by its larger namesake. My last Whitney, Lucretia, her husband Pardon Worden, and daughter and son-in-law Samantha and Lorenzo Kyser (as "Kiser") are on the census there in 1850. (Most of the property they bought was sold to Samantha in her name. Can anyone suggest an explanation for that? It seems unusual for the day.) Minnesota: St Anthony Park was a suburb founded in Grover Cleveland's time. It was soon annexed by St Paul. (I lived there for nine years.) It's in Ramsey Co. St Anthony Falls is where Minneapolis started; the city's first name was "St Anthony". (It's about a mile upriver from the recent bridge collapse, explaining the treacherous currents complicating the rescue and recovery efforts.) Fort Snelling is downriver a few miles, and is not part of any city today. It and Minneapolis are in Hennepin Co. The Fort and the falls have their own section on the city history's Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ History_of_Minneapolis%2C_Minnesota#Fort_Snelling_and_St._Anthony_Falls "Lake Pepin" refers to a bulb in the Mississippi between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The counties on the Minnesota side are Goodhue and Wabasha. The latter has a couple of townships called "Lake" and "Pepin", but no place on land called "Lake Pepin". There is a Pepin, Wisconsin on the other side-- it's where Laura Ingalls Wilder was born. (Lake Pepin is special to me, as it was named for the Pepin brothers who traveled with Duluth, and they are my eighth-great-granduncles.) "Blue Earth City" is Blue Earth in Faribault Co., to distinguish it from Blue Earth Co. (And Faribault isn't in Faribault Co., either!) Same with Sandusky "City", Ohio, in Erie Co., where I once had a summer job. There is also a Sandusky County, nearby. Will try to provide some leads regarding the places in Kansas. Onawa, Kansas -- There is a town "Onaga"; also county "Ottawa". I don't find Onawa. Parallel, Kansas -- Can find no Parallel, Ks in my Hammond Atlas which shows more of the cities than most maps. However, in the Kansas City, Ks area there is a major street called "Parallel Parkway" through old sections of the area. Possibly, there was a town in the area by that name which no longer exists. Sedgewick, Kansas -- There is a town "Sedgwick" in Harvey County; also, the county immediately south of Harvey County is Sedgwick County. Note the spelling: Sedgwick. Hope this is of some help. Tim, I took a look at the Maine entries and immediately recognized many of the towns from my Maine research. Some are obviously from published sources that I recognized as being inaccurately spelled when I first read them. Here are some answers for you: Belmond is probably Belmont, which is in Waldo County, just east of Belgrade. Broomfield I recognize from Pierce's work on the Whitneys of Moose River, Maine. I believe I am correct in stating that Broomfield should be Brownfield. Farrington is probably Farmington. My family was from Freeman. It is not an incorporated community, and is not on a map that I have seen today. I believe it lies to the northeast of Strong, Maine in Franklin County. Lubec lies near the Canadian border, just south of Eastport in Washington County. Mechanics Falls is in Androscoggin Co., just west of Auburn. New Castle ahould be Newcastle, which overlooks Damariscotta in Lincoln County. Otisfield is in Oxford County, just north of Casco. Philips and Phillips Village should be what today is Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine, south of Rangeley. Sherman Hills should read Sherman Mills, which is on Rt. 95 in Aroostook Co., Maine. Trinity came from Pierce's work on Joel Whitney, and should read Unity, not Trinity. Unity is on Rt. 202 in Waldo Co., Maine. West Gardiner is just to the west of Gardiner in Kennebec Co. If you can give me the context for the places I haven't mentioned, I may be able to figure them out. I hope this is of some help. Tim - Having been born and raised in Ohio I can fill you in on two of the locations through personal knowledge. As far as I know there is no Danube, Ohio. You are probably referring to the Whitney's found in Danville, Brown Twp., Knox Co. found on page 205 in Pierce, under Thomas #1331 and his children. I have found the same Danube information listed for them in another source. I concur that the Londonville is really Loudonville in Ashland County, close to Danville and in which one of his sons, John, lived. I was a resident of Ashland, Ashland Co. and know Loudonville well. I have been to the old Whitney farm in Brown Twp. searching for clues to my own ancestry. To no avail I'm sorry to say. Elk Horn is in Shelby Co., Iowa. It appears to be two separate words, as opposed to "Elkhorns" in some neighboring states. (Anyone with Danish connections might like to visit their Immigrant Museum-- http://dkmuseum.org/ .) I suspected Clarence Hollow might be in the Town of Clarence, in Erie County-- and boy is it ever. It's one of the oldest settlements in the county, and still thriving-- serious antiquers on the list may be interested: http://www.clarencehollow.org/ Cortlandville is a Town in Cortland County, and surrounds, but does not include, the City of Cortland. (Is that clear? No, it's upstate... If you find the city/village/hamlet/town business confusing, this page should help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_divisions_of_New_York ) I've found no trace of a "Jersey City, New York"; that's almost certainly a misreading of "Jersey City, N.J.". However, there is a Jersey Colony, pop. 75, near Southold in Suffolk County, N.Y. "Plasky" would be Pulaski, Oswego Co., N.Y. My stepsiblings grew up there. It's pronounced "p'-LAS-ky", with a long "I" at the end. "Sherborn, New York", if it isn't Sherborn, Mass., must be Sherburne in Chenango County. It's both a Town and a Village. "Huntington, Pennsylvania"-- better be careful here. There is a city, Huntingdon, in Huntingdon County-- note the "D". But there are also less-populated Townships called "Huntington", with a "T", in Adams and Luzerne Counties. "Menosha" is probably Menasha, the name of both a Town and a City in Winnebago County, Wisc. It might also mean Kenosha, in Kenosha County. I made an error in my last message; my ancestress Lucretia Whitney Worden and her family were on the 1860 census in East Saginaw, but still in N.Y. in 1850. I would like to know which other Whitneys might have been in East Saginaw at the time.
