    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Elinor, Wife of John
    2. Dear Sandy: The Warwickshire comes from Ancestral File, I think, and, to the best of our knowledge, has no basis in any known source that could remotely be called reliable. The tip-off is that she is cited as having been born at St. Margaret's Warwickshire. Since St. Margaret's Westminster is where John and his siblings were born to Thomas and Mary (Bray) Whitney, and since my Phillmore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers shows absolutely no St. Margaret's parish anywhere in the entirety of Warwickshire, I would suspect that some not-too-careful person miscopied the Westminster of her husband as Warwickshire. I would also guess that the 1599 birthdate was derived from the fact that Elinor's first child (Mary) was born in 1619. The following is the note I have on her short life. >In Boyd Inhabitants of London, with father (50459), but not in the >transcription of the Isleworth Parish Register, which is given as >indecipherable between April and September 5 of 1619. (Other of John's children WERE in the Isleworth Parish Register) This same Mary died and was buried from St. Mary Aldermary in London on 15 Feb 1626/7, where there are other records of John and Elinor's family. At this point in time, according, I believe, to Melville's book, the family was living in Bow Lane, which is quite close to that parish church. You are correct that we don't have the date and place of marriage or surname for Elinor, but it is not from a lack of trying. I, myself, spent four days working on this through every resource to be found in the Library of the British Society of Genealogists in London. It is not in (or I did not find it in) any of the marriage resources for London and environs, and I didn't find it in any other sources like the dozens and dozens of parish registers that I checked. This probably has been more than you wanted to hear on this matter, but I have been so frustrated by this persistent error that will never die, once it is entered into Ancestral File. Happy Hunting!
