Dear Rebecca, I found an Alpheus Whitney in the Maine 1850 Census in the town of Prospect in Waldo County. There is a book "Vital Records of Prospect Maine to the year 1892", transcribed by Elizabeth M. Mosher, published by Picton Press of Rockport Maine and can be found and ordered at the website <http://www.pictonpress.com>. Or perhaps you might find a copy in a library near you.
