I think I may be of some limited assistance on this inquiry. In my (miscellaneous) collected data, I find that I have a CHARLES E. WHITNEY, born October 21, 1848, son of JOHN and MARTHA WHITNEY (source noted as Henderson, Jefferson County, New York Births). My research (so far) indicates that JOHN WHITNEY was the son of ERASTUS WHITNEY (1787-1855) and HANNAH JEROME (1785-1822). ERASTUS WHITNEY was the son of SAMUEL WHITNEY (born c. 1750 - "of New York City, New York") and MARY ST. JOHN (no further info) (per Childs Jefferson County Gazateer). ERASTUS WHITNEY (1787-1855) married first HANNAH JEROME (1785-1822). HANNAH JEROME died in Jefferson County, New York. ERASTUS and HANNAH had at least the following children: Truman Orson J. Whitney m. Martha P. Wood Sophronia Whitney m. William Russell Nutting Dorville H. Whitney m. Mary A. ??? John/Jonathan Whitney m. Martha A. Bullfinch (I have today added the "Bullfinch") Maria Whitney Randal Whitney ERASTUS WHITNEY married second BETSEY WOOD born July 3, 1790 in New Hampshire. BETSEY WOOD WHITNEY died September 21, 1875 in Henderson, Jefferson County, New York. ERASTUS and BETSEY had at least the following children: Hannah Whitney Betsey Alfreda Whitney m. Samuel Hungerford Nutting Fanny Whitney m. Stevenson E. Ingalls Eveline Whitney m. I believe Jenifer will find information on the early Whitney family posted there. I have a notation that the material on Samuel Whitney and Mary St. John came from Childs Jefferson County Gazateer.
