----- Original Message ----- From: Larry Tracy To: Ken Whitney Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2000 10:13 PM Subject: Josiah Whitney - Update Just sat down to brief you on some new facts, when your query appeared. Although I don't know the customs of the time, it presents itself as plausible, since both Steven and David Whitney appear to be in Bridgton in the same time period. Ken,amnd those of the WRG that are following the Josiah Whitney dilemma, please check Archives for March 2, 1997. At the risk of going over mistakes that were subsequently corrected , and proceeding with investigation, please review the claim of this persons claim that he is a direct decendant of Josiah Whitney and Hannah Barstow! He claims that Josiah's son was Silas! Does he have information that the Group is lacking? I went into overdrive yesterday and found some information on the Cape Anne Association as it is oficially called. I have a partial document in my possession that includes a great many names, none of which are Whitneys'. The point of destination was St. Stevens, Nova Scotia, where these Loyalists were granted lands. I am told that some refused to sign an oath of allegiance to the crown and some were not able to pay taxes, thus, the dispursement of some of the group to many of the towns in the vicinity including Maine. Please be advised that this is an oral interpretation presented to me by someone who had researched this subject 11 years ago. Mor to come as facts develop. I feel that I must visit New Glouster, Me as soon as time permits. Nancy and I have dug into the Shaker records there on one other occasion and found a wealth of material on,ironically,onJosiah's grand daughter Lydia who held a notable position in the group. Something further may be discovered on the Josiah who purportedly went there. Larry Tracy Jr.
