Young and am a descendant of George W. Whitney and Matilda Olmstead. Ebenezer Whitney, George's father fought in the American Revolution for the CT colony. Since I need verifiable proof of the dates of birth, death and marriage for Ebenezer and his wife Ruth Raymond, I was hoping you could suggest where I can get this information. Geroge and Matilda are buried in East Venice Cemetery, Cayuga County, New York and I have a photo of the gravestone. George and Matilda's daughter Harriet L. married James Young who is my great, great grandfather. His father Gilbert Young also fought in the Revolution an I am a member of the DAR under Gilbert Young. Ruth Raymond's father Simeon also fought in the Revolution. Hope you can point me in the right direction. MasterNun@aol.com Janice N. Young ---------------------------- Dear Janice: Thank you for writing, and I hope this information will be helpful. (I am sending a copy of this to the Whitney Research Group so other researchers of the Whitney surname can benefit from it or add to it.) For reference, your inquiry concerns EBENEZER-5 WHITNEY (David-4, Joseph-3, John-2, Henry-1), b. 8 Aug 1742 in Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut; d. 12 Apr 1808 in New Canaan, Fairfield Co., Connecticut; m. 19 Dec 1771 in Norwalk RUTH RAYMOND. During the Revolutionary War, Ebenezer Whitney, (1742-1808), served as gunner at Horseneck and as lieutenant of a company of artillery, 1779-81, for the defense of Norwalk, Connecticut. Several descendants of Ebenezer Whitney have made applications to the D.A.R. and been accepted, according to the Extracts contained on the Whitney Research Group's web site on these pages: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/military/dar/dar02.html - http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/military/dar/dar04.html - http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/military/dar/dar09.html - http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/military/dar/dar11.html - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am under the impression that future generations need only prove up to another's accepted DAR application. For example, you would need to prove George Whitney's parentage, birth, marriage, death etc. (and your descendancy from him with appropriate documentation) and reference the accepted DAR applications found in the appropriate volumes. Use the "Search" function on the WRG Site http://www.whitneygen.org and the words Ruth Raymond for your search words for more sources contained on that site. Sources in my database for his birth and marriage: Stephen W. Phoenix, "The Whitney Family of Connecticut, and Its Affiliations; Being an Attempt to Trace the Descendants, as well in the Female as the Male lines, of Henry Whitney, from 1649 to 1878; To which is Prefixed some Account of the Whitneys of England," (New York: Priv. Printed [Bradford Press], 1878), 3 Volumes. Vol 1, p50 Lucius Barnes Barbour, "Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records" (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., reprinted 1994-Present), Card Index, Whitney surname extracts (Transcribed by the Whitney Research Group http://www.whitneygen.org) Edwin Hall, "The Ancient Historical Records of Norwalk, Connecticut. With a plan of the ancient settlement of the town in 1847" (1847) (NEHG Call No. F/104/N9/H2/1847) pages 232 and 237. Source for his death: Virgil D. White, "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, Vol. III" (Waynesboro, Tennessee: The National Historical Publishing Company, 1992) (transcribed on: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/military/whrevpen.html) Finding libraries where these volumes can be viewed might be a little more difficult. I would think that some might be available through the New England Genealogical and Historical Society (Boston) and/or the Library of Congress. The D.A.R. library might also have them. I hope you will send me more information on the descendants of George and Matilda (Olmstead) Whitney also to add to our "official" database -- and Good Luck!
