Hi Jo, In response to your question about unreadable paper, I had a successful experience a few years ago while trying to read an old family register with photographs. The names of the people in the photos had been written underneath them in ink, but it was so faded it was illegible. I used a black light, and the words just popped off the page. I then took the register to Kinko's giant copy machine and had a copy made of the register part (I had removed the photos) and re-wrote the information on the copied paper, had the photographs copied, and made myself a "brand new" old register... perhaps a black light will work for your letter...
