WRG: I got up at 6 AM to work on this some more. My headache has not gotten any better, but I find more confounding information. I have also extracted information from a related submission to the DAR in Washington, DC. It is from another descendant of Increase Blethen and Isabella Whitney, Mrs. Marion Bishop Briggs, #90920, Volume 91, page 292 of the DAR Lineage Books. I have extracted the following submitted information: Increase Blethen, born 1758, died 1838 in Phillips, Maine. Born Royalsborough May 15, 1768 (inconsistent with previous statement, KLW). Married as second wife, Isabella Whitney, born August 2, 1765, died 1843 (consistent with what Marlene Hinkley Groves has for date of death in Hinkleys of Maine, KLW). Married 1784. Children (all surname Blethen): Mary, b. 28 October 1785 Phoebe, b. 25 February 1788 Sarah, b. 2 May 1790 Hannah, b. 28 May 1792 Thankful, b. 8 July 1794, married Thomas Whitney Benjamin, b. 20 December 1796 James, b. 30 March 1799 Esther, b. 21 June 1801 Increase, Jr., b. 6 July 1803 Isabella, b. 29 October 1805 Orillia, b. 19 June 1808 Orphia, b. 28 September, 1811 Comments: The death record for Thankful Blethen in the Raymond records allows one to calculate her birth date as 8 July 1793, not 1794 as stated here. However, the Raymond records are not official records, and may be in error. Of course, these are also not official, so where does the error lie? Anyway, Marion Bishop Briggs is a descendant of Thankful's sister Orphia, and she does also say that Thankful married Thomas Whitney, but does nothing to identify him further. Now, back to submission of Clara Noble Marble, #68531 in Vol. 69, pg 194 of the DAR Lineage Books. I have scrutinized this submission more carefully, and find inconsistency. Mrs. Marble gives the date of birth of Thomas Whitney as 10 September 1799, which is consistent with the Thomas S. Whitney born to Joseph Whitney and Rebecca Stinchfied in the Phillips, Maine vital records. Since they were in Phillips by that time, he was undoubtedly born in Phillips, and not just registered there. She gives their date of the marriage of Thomas and Thankful as 20 February 1819, but there is no Phillips record of the marriage, so where were they married? She submits that Thankful died 10 October 1864, says not where. This is inconsistent with the unofficial Raymond records, which say she died 5 September 1868. She submits that Thankful's mother Isabella died 19 october 1884, but the Marion Briggs submission above and Marlene Hinkley Groves agree on 1843. Lastly, she submits that she is the granddaughter of Thomas and Thankful Whitney thru their daughter Elizabeth T. Whitney (10 Oct 1831-1882), who married in 1851, Silas N. Noble. If you check the Raymond records for the children of Thomas and Thankful Whitney, there is a listing for Elizabeth's birth, as Betsy, on 10 November 1830. Again slightly inconsistent, but who's to say which is correct? Although some inconsistencies exist, the problem remains unsolved. These two submissions thru different children of Increase and Isabella Whitney Blethen seem to agree that their daughter Thankful married Thomas Whiteny. And Mrs. Marble claims Thomas' date of birth as 10 September 1799. Is she wrong? Was he another Thomas? He would have to be another Thomas if we are to believe Edith S. Middleton, author of Marion Thomas Whitney. Now you see why I still have a headache. Just what I needed, another puzzle! Ken Whitney Silver Spring, MD
