    1. [WHITNEY-L] Whitneys, Westminster, MA to Vermont
    2. A lengthy biography of Joseph S. Whitney in the History of Lorain County, Ohio, provides, among much other information, the following extracts of interest: Elisha Whitney, of Westminster Mass, had: Joseph Whitney, b. Westminster, February 21, 1785, m. Abigail Townes, b. Jan. 22, 1791, Andover VT, where the marriage took place on April 27, 1811. They res. in VT after the marriage until 1838, then sent the two older sons to scout OH, finding a suitable spot, the entire family moved to Pittsfield, Lorraine, OH, 1838. Joseph d. there, May 2, 1877, Abigail, May 3, 1872. They had, all born in VT: Hannah T. and Abigail, twins, b. July 5, 1812 d. Oberlin, OH Hannah m. Reuben Stone, Abigail d.y. Joseph S. b. July 10, 1814 Aaron T. b. July 5, 1816 d. 1870, Collinwood, OH Mark, b. dec 17, 1818, of Lorain Co, OH Augustine, b. Dec 27 1820, of Pittsfield, Lor. OH Richard, b. Feb 16 1823, of Grinnell, IA Susan A. b. July 20, 1825, m. John Mills, d. OH Norman, b. Jan 20 1828, of Anthony, KS Loren, b. Feb 26, 1833, of Texas Perhaps this could be included in the database, if only as a note pasted into Elisha's note section. The Elisha is, I believe, is the one b. July 2, 1757, m. Eunice Seaver.

    3. Dear WRG: I am particularly interested in any Whitneys from Westminster, Mass., since this is where my ancestor, Benjamin, was born. Of Elisha Whitney, b. 2 July 1757, Heywood in his "History of Westminster, Massachusetts, 1728-1893", p919, states "His name disappears from the records ab. 1800, and it is thought that he rem. to Winch[endon]. Nothing further known." I looked in the Winchendon, Mass. VRs, but neither his death nor his wife's death appear there. It is possible that Elisha and Eunice moved their entire family to Vermont and that we may find their deaths recorded in or around Andover. 3. The Westminster-born Elisha Whitney is the brother of Phinehas Whitney. Phinehas and his family moved to Vermont sometime between 1800 and 1810. He shows up in Pittfield Twp, Rutland Co., Vermont. If brother Elisha moved to Vermont, he may have been with Phinehas. Phinehas' brother-in-law, Zachariah Rand, also moved to Rutland Co. Phinehas' sons John and Thomas moved to Washington Co., OH, in the 1820s. There I found tax records (1820-1828) for the heirs of an Elisha Whitney. Sometimes the tax records would say Eunice Whitney. Both are listed as non-residents. I received an e-mail from a lady who said Elisha's will is recorded in Hocking Co., OH, and Beverly, Essex Co., MA (1839). The Beverly vitals show the deaths of a Dr. Elisha Whitney (1807) and his wife Eunice (1819). At first I thought these 2 Elishas and Eunices were the same people, but now I'm doubtful. I have not read the will nor its transcription--I'm sure that would cinch it, one way or the other. Hope this helped.
