Falmouth is a problem of easy confusion, especially when it appears that the Falmouth of the early records is known today as Portland and that the current-day Falmouth is from somewhat later. I'm not sure just when the name change occurred, but I suspect that it was after the British fired the town early in the Revolutionary War (Oct. 18, 1775). Not only did the place burn then, but a fire in the Cumberland court house seems to have destroyed records prior to about 1905.
