Falmouth is a problem of easy confusion, especially when it appears that the Falmouth of the early records is known today as Portland and that the current-day Falmouth is from somewhat later. I'm not sure just when the name change occurred, but I suspect that it was after the British fired the town early in the Revolutionary War (Oct. 18, 1775). Not only did the place burn then, but a fire in the Cumberland court house seems to have destroyed records prior to about 1905. These two fiery events have caused genealogical heartburn to lots of us. Mike Poston Rockville, Maryland
