I recieved the Lyman & Olive Whitney Bible from the seller. It was taken off ebay for some dispute they and the seller had, and he sold it to me directly. I've been ahving trouble on the WRG page, it isn't letting me navigate or open up the family files so I haven't been able to place where Lyman fits into the family yet. (Lyman b. Dec. 19, 1804). I transcribed and scanned the Bible and placed the info and pics on my website www.chaseyourtale.com under Family Bibles and then Whitney Bible if you wish to see it.

Besides, the family in question are proved by DNA to be direct descendants of Henry-1 Whitney of Long Island and Connecticut, while John Merrick Whitney is a proven descendant of John-1 Whitney of Watertown. That eliminates him from consideration as an ancestor in this study. Regards, Robert Mr. Robert L. Ward http://wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg/index.php/User:Rlward
Dear WRG: This appeared on the MA/Middlesex maillist, and I thought it might be worth something to someone. Allan E. Dear Melissa: Welcome to the Whitney Research Group. Being on the maillist makes you a member! I do see some problems with the material that you published in your introductory letter. First and foremost, the numbering system that you are using seems to me to be not the standard format. Normally, the immigrant ancestor -- in our case John Whitney of Westminster who came to Watertown in 1635 is referred to as John-1, and then all of his children are given the number two. The children of all of the second generation are then given the number 3, and so on. So, I'll copy one of your entries and change the numbering according to the more accepted practice. 8. JOSEPH-3 WHITNEY (JOHN-2, JOHN-1) was born 01 Jan 1651 in Watertown, MA, and died 04 Nov 1702 in Watertown, MA. He married MARTHA BEACH 24 Jan 1674 in Watertown, MA. She was born 10 Mar 1649 in Watertown, MA. Children of JOSEPH WHITNEY and MARTHA BEACH are: i. JOSEPH-4 WHITNEY, b. 15 Aug 1675, Watertown, MA; d. 03 Jul 1737, Newton, MA. ii. MARTHA-4 WHITNEY, b. 20 Dec 1677, Watertown, MA; d. 30 Oct 1702. iii. JOHN -4 WHITNEY, b. 29 Jul 1680, Watertown, MA; d. 11 Nov 1760, Weston, MA. iv. ISAAC -4 WHITNEY, b. 10 Mar 1681, Watertown, MA; d. 20 Mar 1681, Watertown, MA. v. ISAAC -4 WHITNEY, b. 04 Feb 1682, Watertown, MA; d. 01 Nov 1702. vi. BENJAMIN -4 WHITNEY, b. 31 Jan 1684, Watertown, MA; d. Oct 1736, Watertown, MA. vii. SARAH -4 WHITNEY, b. 20 Jun 1697, Watertown, MA; d. 1702, Watertown, MA If, in the case of ISAAC, where one child died shortly after birth and the next son was given the same name - their generation number doesn't change. If you wish to call attention to the fact that there were two ISAAC's, then you might choose to list them this way iv. ISAAC -4 WHITNEY, b. 10 Mar 1681, Watertown, MA; d. 20 Mar 1681, Watertown, MA. v. ISAAC(2nd) -4 WHITNEY, b. 04 Feb 1682, Watertown, MA; d. 01 Nov 1702. If you would like me to try to assist you further, I would be pleased to do so, but would prefer that we make further exchanges on a one to one basis rather than burdening the list with our discussions. Then, if you would wish to publish your material again for inclusion on our WRG web site, you could arrange to send it to either Mr. Robert Ward or Mr. Tim Doyle, who maintain our "wiki" WRG web site. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Green ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

THOMPSON: George and his siblings grew up on a farm in Gillett, PA. They were poor as money goes and at times could not afford shoes. George would tell how he would have to plow the fields in his bare feet. After that he owned a small grocery store. He didn't have a cash register, he was very good at figuring amounts in his head. Later he worked at the Horseheads Foundry keeping the sand wet, so they could make molds the next day. After the Foundry burned he worked at Judson's Coal. After retiring he gardened and did work around the house. This is how he received his first injury. A wooden beam from the back porch he was fixing fell and hit him in the head. He said it had smarted for a while but brushed it off and went back to work. A few years later he had trouble remembering things. One night he got up to get some chicken that Bertha would bring home from work, he then either went to the bathroom, the back porch, or his room. Instead he fell down the basement stairs. There was no door at the basement stairs. They had found the chicken he had gotten laying next to him. He died three days later in the hospital from his injuries. While in the hospital he kept asking for George Jr. who deployed In Germany with the Army. George Jr. was on his way home, he never made it, when George Sr. succumbed to the injuries. The doctor told Bertha that their also had been a black or dead spot on his brain from a previous injury that was not taken care of, George is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery Elmira NY More About GEORGE OSCAR SR. Hi there. Reference to your statement,"There is only on Whitney family in Jefferson Co., MS in 1820..." I have John Merrick Whitney, b.SC, Md. one Clarissa Montgomery 17 Oct. 1815, place unknown. I have Clarissa being born and died in Jefferson County. It looks like she may have been born, wed and died in Jefferson Co., MS., which would indicate that John Merrick Whitney was in Jefferson Co. before 1820. How does that look? - Robert C. That such a son existed is asserted by Pierce in his _The Descendants of John Whitney_ (1895), page 282, although he doesn't say anything about a marriage or children for him. I'm finding myself a bit confused about some things I've been reading in the Whitney Research Groupand was wondering if someone can help me sort it all out. First of all which Thomas Whitney was accused of mmurdering the husband of his neice,of which he was later found innocent of murder but guilty of manslaughter? Was it John the immigrant's fatheor John's brother Thomas or a relative by that same name? Also was it John's brother Thomas who hit someone and had to be bailed out of jail by his father Thomas and his brother in law Francis Beale? Seems like that family were quite hot headed and here I thought my temper was because of my being 1/2 Irish not because of my English ancestry...HA! HA! Another thing I'm curious about...I realize that WRG is primarily for the surname Whitney but I was wondering if anyone knows about some lines that married into the Whitney clan. For instance I see that the name Cromwell pops up in the Whitney tree. I was wondering if anyone's found a connection to the famous Oliver Cromwell? I looked up on the internet under Morgan ap William since Elizabeth verch Morgan ap William married Robert Whitney, who were ancestors of John the immigrant. I don't know if the information I found is the same Morgan ap William or if it is correct but it stated that Morgan ap William married Catherine Cromwell, sister of Thomas Cromwell, the statesman and that they were the ancestors of Oliver Cromwell. I've got other questions about what I read about some of the Whitneys at WRG but rather than try to cram it all in this e mail I'll send seperate e mails for those questions. Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed light on my above questions. Noreen Maloney LaTour Burlington,VT
Jerry, I have your pension file. I came home Thursday afternoon, and it was such a glorious day, my wife "forced" me to take her golfing. Since then I have had to return to work. So, no progress will be made on abstracting until at least Monday, my next day off. The file gives us no mention of Remington, but does contain at lot of good info. Stephen could well be H. instead of A. I will persue him on my next trip to the Archives. Crosby did marry Rose Negus, and I think I remember it taking place in Burr Oak. Anyway, it will come out when I can abstract it. I'll get back to you when the abstract is done, and will mail you the photocopies when I'm done. Ken, I've done some fast research on Stephen A., I don't know his military age but here goes. First is to question the A. could it possibly be an H.? In 1840 is a Harrison Whitney in the township of Nottawa, Saint Joseph Michigan After 1840, I failed to find him. Maybe moved lost, I don't know In 1850 we find a Julia Ann Whitney age 30 from NY and living at Burr Oak,, Michigan very close to Nottawa She shows no husband, has a daughter Marg J. of 8 years born Michigan has a son STEPHEN K. OR H. 6 years born Michigan est birth of 1844 has a ? mother Betsey Raugan 64 years New York In 1860 is STEPHEN H. WHITNEY age 17 born abt. 1843 at Burr Oak, St. Joseph, Michigan living with a family of Israel Negus who was a neighbor in 1850 with no boys. In 1870 is Stephen Whitney age 26 of Burr Oak, St. Joseph, Michigan with a wife of Anna 29 yrs from Michigan son of Herbert 11/12 from Michigan In 1880 is Stephen Whitney born about 1844 age 36 at Coldwater, Branch, Michigan wife of Emma (Anna?) age 38 son Herbert age 10 dau Myrtie age 5 Could the H. middle initial be for Harrison? I put this together fast so you may find mistakes. By the way the location is all very close to Remington Whitney at Burr Oak, Saint Joseph, Michigan.
Dear Jackie: The Weston Vital Records, on p. 286, show the following marriage; May 26, 1847, Robert Fiske of Lincoln, Yeoman, aged 32, born in Weston, son of Robert and Nancy Fiske of Lincoln, and Susan A. (Ann - AEG) Whitney of Weston, aged 22, born in Newton, daughter of Jona [Jonathan - AEG] & Abigail Whitney of Watertown. [This record was a return of Joseph Field, D.D., who performed the marriage] In the Lincoln Vital Records there appears the following birth on p. 35. Mary Ellen, d. Robert, farmer, (b. Weston) and Susan (b. Newton), July 11, 1849. This would suggest that the census taker put her age as being in her second year, rather than having passed her first birthday as we consider it today. I hope that this is helpful in supplementing the material you have found to this point. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Dear Jackie: I wonder about the second marriage for this reason. When Azuba is listed in the Groton Vital Records on Vol. 2, p. 60, when marrying Mathias Farnsworth, she is listed as Azuba Farnsworth rather than as Azuba Whitney. Further, in the later listing under Mathias' name on p. 62, she is identified as Azuba Farnsworth, not Whitney. Thus, I suspect the purported second marriage doesn't stand the scrutiny of the Vital Records. Unfortunately, when I got a new computer and switched to Vista operating system, only 4 of my 9 CD's of the entire MA Vital Records will work. Worcester is not one of the four, so I can't look at the published VR data for Harvard to check this further. I do see the intent listed in Stow (which fortunately is in Middlesex county and that one works) but there is no marriage listed there. I checked the death records and there is no entry for a Joshua Whitney of the proper age. So, the intent is of interest, but it is not a record of a marriage. If you have access to the Harvard records and can find a marriage there, please let me know. I hope this helps with your work. Sincerely, Allan E.
