Tim: I'll try to assist you on the Illinois communities. Big Grove, Illinois — It is a township in Kendall County, IL, southwest of Chicago; it's also one of earliest settlements in Champaign County, IL, which is in the central part of the state. Don't know which one you might be hunting for. Burnside Crossing, IL — I believe it is in Chestnut Township, in Knox County. Campton, IL — Today, I believe the community by this name is known as Wasco in Campton Township in Kane County, west of Chicago. My great- great-grandfather Joseph and his brother John Whitney homesteaded here in 1835 coming from Java Village, NY. The Whitney Cemetery is located in what is known today as Wasco and came off a portion of John Whitney's 1,000 acre farm. Chicago Lawn, IL — I believe this is a community within the city of Chicago located in Cook County east of Midway Airport. Coloma, IL — Not sure, but there are several townships in Illinois with this name. Would probably need to know the context this shows up in to make a better determination. There is also a Colona, IL in Rock Island County in case the name is spelled wrong. It appears that quite often areas were named that became a township instead of a community, probably because of the way people settled prior to establishing a village. Gardiner, IL — I don't find a Gardiner, but do find a Gardner this is in Grundy County southwest of Chicago. Again, Gardiner may be an early name for a community that no longer exists or the name of a township however I don't find a township in IL by that name. Hillsborough, IL — I believe this is spelled Hillsboro. It is in Montgomery County. My aunt was born there. It's the home of the Red Rooster Inn (I was sure you needed a little trivia.) Hubbard Woods/Winnetka, IL —Winnetka is a Chicago suburb north along Lake Michigan in Cook County. Hubbard Woods is another suburb or community area just north and west of Winnetka. Kendall, IL — This is a county southwest of Chicago. Communities in it include Oswego, Plano and Yorkville as well as several other smaller ones. Today it is growing at an unbelievable rate as suburbia marches west from Chicago. Mission Point, IL — You've got me on this one. Their is a resort by that name near Chicago, so it may be an early settlement near Chicago that was swallowed as the city grew. Perhaps someone from Chicago can tell you. Shockoken, IL — Have no idea, however, when I Googled it, our wikki site came up showing it in Hancock County (Nauvoo, IL), and Henderson County. Both border the Mississippi River with Hancock County just below Henderson so Shockoken could have been an area in both counties. Also, many of these counties were formed from larger counties. Someone from one or both counties can probably answer your question. West Troy, IL — Would expect this to be an area west of Troy, IL, which is straight east of St. Louis. It is in Madison County. Tim, I'm not sure if I have helped you a great deal or not. I hope so. Questions, or more info, just write. These are all excellent! Thank you to everyone who has contributed in just the short amount of time. To view the context of these entries, do the following: 1. Go to http://wiki.whitneygen.org/ 2. In the search box, type in "Category:City, State", replacing the city & state with the item on the list. 3. That will probably bring up a page that tells you that that category doesn't exist, but will include a link to create it. Click that red link, and the page which references that location will be listed. 4. Click on the link to the page to view the family group page or other page which references that location. Please do not edit the pages if the locations are spelled wrong, etc. as that is what my project will attempt to do automagically. Some are obviously from published sources that I recognized as being inaccurately spelled when I first read them. Here are some answers for you: Belmond is probably Belmont, which is in Waldo County, just east of Belgrade. Broomfield I recognize from Pierce's work on the Whitneys of Moose River, Maine. I believe I am correct in stating that Broomfield should be Brownfield. Farrington is probably Farmington. My family was from Freeman. It is not an incorporated community, and is not on a map that I have seen today. I believe it lies to the northeast of Strong, Maine in Franklin County. Lubec lies near the Canadian border, just south of Eastport in Washington County. Mechanics Falls is in Androscoggin Co., just west of Auburn. New Castle ahould be Newcastle, which overlooks Damariscotta in Lincoln County. Otisfield is in Oxford County, just north of Casco. Philips and Phillips Village should be what today is Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine, south of Rangeley. Sherman Hills should read Sherman Mills, which is on Rt. 95 in Aroostook Co., Maine. Trinity came from Pierce's work on Joel Whitney, and should read Unity, not Trinity. Unity is on Rt. 202 in Waldo Co., Maine. West Gardiner is just to the west of Gardiner in Kennebec Co. If you can give me the context for the places I haven't mentioned, I may be able to figure them out. I hope this is of some help. Tim -- Since my Whitney ancestors settled in Lee County, Illinois I'll do some looking there and since I'm now in Washington State, I'll do a little research there as well. Best wishes -- Greg Nickels Seattle, Washington Here is what I've found: Big Grove, Illinois is a township in Kendall County. Burnside Crossing, Illinois is in Chestnut Township, Knox County. Campton, Illinois is in Kane County. Chicago Lawn is a neighborhood in the southwest part of the City of Chicago, annexed in 1889. Coloma, Illinois is a township in Whiteside County. Hubbard Woods/Winnetka, Illinois a suburb of Chicago, north of the city on Lake Michigan. Kendall, Illinois is a township in Kendall County. Shockoken, Illinois don't know but there is a Shokonon in Henderson County. West Troy, Illinois don't know but there is a Troy in Madison County and a community known as Shorewood in Will County today was at one time known as Troy or West Troy. Ruby City, Washington is a well known ghost town. It was founded around 1888 in Okanogan County because of discoveries of silver ore. Ruby was also known as the Queen City of the Okanogan County and with the mining boom became a lively and well known mining camp. When the price of silver fell in 1892, the town was abandoned. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tim Doyle To: whitney@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, August 12, 2007 8:13 AM Subject: [WHITNEY] Location Help We're currently trying to clean up our locality listing on the WRG website. My previous message should have mentioned Jefferson County, Mississippi, not Jackson County, Mississippi. Also my computer clock is off. Bill
Recently, the Whitney DNA Project revealed that there was a fourth confirmed descendant of Henry Whitney. He is Steve Whitney b.1915 and I have been trying to connect his ancestry to Henry. So far, I know that he is the son of Isac b.1866 in Jackson County, Mississippi (wife Beatrice Bailey) and grandson of Henry b.1820 in Jackson County, Mississippi (wife Dolly Unknown). There is a strong possibility that Henry's father may be William Whitney of Jackson County, Mississippi. This entire family is listed in the 1880 census as black. Also listed in the household are Mariah Curtis, Paulene Donaldson and Bingman Brown as grandchildren of Henry. I would really appreciate any help that anyone can offer in making the connection of this line to Henry. We know that he is a direct descendant from his DNA so there must be a male link somewhere. If someone can suggest sources that I can check from Canada, it would be a great help. Any, and all help, appreciated, Bill Whitney
WRG: Below you will find my abstract of the Civil War pension file of Crosby Whitney. This is the second in a series of three abstracts concerning three soldiers who are probably somehow related: Crosby, Crosby C., and Stephen Henry Whitney. This family is currently being researched by Gerald E. Whitney. Enjoy! >From the Civil War Pension File of Crosby Whitney Private, Company G, 44th Iowa Infantry Lucinda A. Whitney, Widow Invalid's Application #1245007, Certificate #1005828 Widow's Application #854428, Certificate #673422 National Archives Building, Washington, D.C. On 26 February 1900 from Republic County, Kansas, Crosby Whitney signed an Application for Invalid Pension. He is fifty-three years old and a resident of Belleville, Republic County, Kansas. On 5 May 1864 he had enrolled in Company G of the 44th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers. He had been honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa on 15 September 1864. He is totally unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of stomach trouble, indigestion, rheumatism, and general debility. The Surgeon's Certificate reveals him to be 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds in weight, and 53 years old. He is found to be old looking for his years. He received a disability rating for his stomach troubles only, and was certified for a pension at six dollars per month commencing 3 March 1900. Crosby answered an inquiry from the Bureau of Pensions dated 22 March 1900. He is married to Lucinda A. Whitney, whose maiden name was Lucinda A. Williams. They were married 18 November 1874 in Grundy County, Iowa by Rev. A.D. Kinzer. Neither had been previously married. Their living children are: Herbert C. Whitney, born 7 November 1876; Herman G. Whitney, born 8 January 1878; Elmer L. Whitney, born 4 April 1879; George S. Whitney, born 22 August 1880; Addie M. Whitney, born 7 April 1882; Guy S. Whitney, born 3 February 1889; Ila M. Whitney, born 22 January 1892; and Loretta A. Whitney, born 10 December 1898. Subsequently, Crosby and family removed to Fresno County, California. >From there he signed a Declaration for Increase of Pension on 17 June 1905. He is fifty-eight years old and a resident of Laton, Fresno Co., California. He had been born on 26 October 1846 at Rideout, Illinois. He described himself as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a light complexion, light hair, and blue eyes. On 13 April 1906 the Pension Commissioner was advised that Crosby Whitney, who had last been paid at six dollars per month to 4 November 1905, had been dropped from the pension rolls because of his death on 29 December 1905 (sic). The application for a pension by Crosby's widow contained a Duplicate Certificate of Death from the California State Board of Health for her husband Crosby. He had been born 26 October 1846, and was 59 years, 2 months, 4 days old at the time of his death. He was married, and his occupation was farmer. His father was George Whitney, who was born in Canada. His mother's name was Maria Row, and she had been born in New York. The informant for this Personal and Statistical Particulars information was Mrs. L.A. Whitney of Laton, California. The informant for the Medical Certificate of Death was Charles W. Hardman of Laton, California. Crosby's death occurred at 5 AM on 30 December from cerebral hemorrhage. He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Hanford on 31 December 1905. On 23 July 1906 from Fresno Co., California Lucinda A. Whitney signed a Declaration for Widow's Pension. She is fifty-one years old and a resident of Laton, Fresno Co., California. She was married to the soldier under the name Lucinda A. Williams at Liscomb, Grundy Co., Iowa on 18 September 1874 (sic) by Rev. A.D. Kinzer. Neither had been previously married. The soldier died at Laton, Fresno Co., California on 30 December 1874. The soldier left the following child under the age of 16: Loreta Ann Whitney, born 10 December 1897 at Cuba, Republic Co., Kansas. This application was rejected because insufficient evidence had been submitted to validate the claim. On 26 October 1908 while still residing in Laton, Lucinda again signed a Declaration for Widow's Pension. One fact differs in this application from the last. She now says that their marriage took place in Felix, Grundy Co., Iowa on 18 November 1874. All other information is given as in the first application. I.W.M. Blough, Clerk of the District Court of Grundy Co., Iowa submitted a certified copy of the marriage license record of Crosby Whitney and Lucinda Williams. The date of issue of the license is 16 November 1874. The date of the return is 27 November 1874, and the marriage took place on 18 November 1874. The record was made by Rev. A.D. Kinzer. The State of Iowa, Adjutant-General's Office supplied a certificate of the service record of Crosby Whitney. Crosby Whitney, age 18, a native of Illinois, residence Marshall Township, Marshall County, Iowa was enlisted in Company G, (Captain Cyrus H. Shaw), 44th Regiment of Iowa Vol. Infantry on 5 May 1864 and was mustered in as a private for a period of 100 days on 1 June 1864 at Davenport, Iowa. He was mustered out of service at Davenport, Iowa 15 September 1864 by reason of expiration of term for which he had enlisted. On 27 March 1929, Lucinda A. Whitney, address 2302 Clay Street, Fresno, California, was reported dropped from the pension roll. She was last paid at thirty dollars per month to 4 March 1929, and was dropped because of her death on 8 March 1929. Ken Whitney Silver Spring, MD

The Whitney Group is very fortunate to have high caliber people like Tim Doyle and Robert Ward (among others) who make such a difference. W.G. Whitney

I would like to add my thanks as well for all the work done on the Whitney projects by Robert Ward, Tim Doyle, and others. Due to info I had seen on the whitneywiki, I recently started looking for info on the Merchant Tailors Company and was surprised to learn that it still exists. I see there was a Merchant Tailors School in Elizabethan London. Does anyone know if our John Whitney attended the school? I understand that he was a Freeman of the Company. In a book titled Original Letters Illustrative of English History . By Henry Ellis , on Google books, there is a letter from a Lady Elizabeth to the Merchant Tailors Company And the Lord Mayor of London: The Lady Elizabeth to the Lord Mayor of London, and the Master, Wardens, and Court of Assistants of the Merchant Tailors' Company, upon the eve of her leaving England, in beha/f of her Man-Cook. A.D. 1613. [ PROM THE COURT BOOKS OF THE MERCHANT TAILORS* COMPANY.) ¿ The great honor which this Company had long received in having Kings for brothers of its fraternity, may perhaps in part account for the Petition of the present Letter. Richard the Second, Henry the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth, Edward the Fourth, Richard the Third, Henry the Seventh, and Henry Prince of Wales, had all been enrolled among Its members. ¿ Sir John Swynnerton the Lord Mayor of London in 1613, to whom the Letter is primarily addressed, was also a Merchant Tailor. Court interference upon vacancies in city places, at an earlier period than this, has been already noticed, and was continued somewhat later. Charles the Second's Letter is still extant recommending a Clerk to this Company. The Princess Elizabeth's application, however, as far as herself was concerned, was an attempt to pay a debt of gratitude. She was going to the Palatinate, and wished to secure the reversion of a new post for a faithful servant I hadnt realized how influential these trade associations were. It seems John Whitney was in very good company. T.E.Shirley
What an absolute exciting "tipping point". Is there anyway I/we can be of assistance? What a marvelous idea to shed some light on all our dead ends. A lot of work for which everyone is thankful. Perhaps it will shed some light on my dead end------Jacob Whitney in Delaware County, NY. and possibly Ulster Co., NY . His parents are needed ! Family hearsay says that the ancestors came from Conneticuit. It has been a dilemna for many family members for years. He and wife, Nellie Freeman died in a house fire ---Aug 9, 1861. Census records show variable dates of birth--1785/1800. Large family incl 13 children------ Children born 1822-1845. Most children farmed out and living in other families in the area in later census records.
