I believe there is a problem with Hartford, Pennsylvania. Because I lived in Susquehanna County PA at one time, I am familiar with most of the towns in that county. There is a HARFORD, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, which would be near the Dubois Creek Dam--but in searching gazetteers, Google maps, Yahoo, hometownlocator.com, and numerous other sources I could find no Hartford in Pennsylvania. Oddly enough, Google has several hundred entries for Hartford PA, but nowhere is its County mentioned. The entries I did look up on Google were mostly dead-ends. A couple were family histories, but I believe "Hartford" as a place of birth in these is a mistake. Parents or predecessors were born in New Milford or Great Bend--both towns in Susquehanna County very close to "Harford." It does not seem unusual when seeing the name "Harford" to unconsciously think a "t" is missing. Perhaps if you refer back to the source and the context of the material you have, you might be able to pick up some other clues that would help to clarify this puzzler. Tim et al,. Some of these places are close to my heart. Here are some clarifications. New York: "Howeoge" is probably Honeoye in the Town of Richmond, Ontario Co., and on Honeoye Lake. There is also a Honeoye Falls in the Town of Mendon in Monroe Co. a few miles to the north. My last Whitney, Lucretia, her husband Pardon Worden, and daughter and son-in-law Samantha and Lorenzo Kyser (as "Kiser") are on the census there in 1850. (Most of the property they bought was sold to Samantha in her name. Can anyone suggest an explanation for that? It seems unusual for the day.) Minnesota: St Anthony Park was a suburb founded in Grover Cleveland's time. It was soon annexed by St Paul. (I lived there for nine years.) It's in Ramsey Co. St Anthony Falls is where Minneapolis started; the city's first name was "St Anthony". (It's about a mile upriver from the recent bridge collapse, explaining the treacherous currents complicating the rescue and recovery efforts.) Fort Snelling is downriver a few miles, and is not part of any city today. It and Minneapolis are in Hennepin Co. The counties on the Minnesota side are Goodhue and Wabasha. The latter has a couple of townships called "Lake" and "Pepin", but no place on land called "Lake Pepin". There is a Pepin, Wisconsin on the other side-- it's where Laura Ingalls Wilder was born. (Lake Pepin is special to me, as it was named for the Pepin brothers who traveled with Duluth, and they are my eighth-great-granduncles.) "Blue Earth City" is Blue Earth in Faribault Co., to distinguish it from Blue Earth Co. (And Faribault isn't in Faribault Co., either!) Same with Sandusky "City", Ohio, in Erie Co., where I once had a summer job. There is also a Sandusky County, nearby. Onawa, Kansas -- There is a town "Onaga"; also county "Ottawa". I don't find Onawa. Parallel, Kansas -- Can find no Parallel, Ks in my Hammond Atlas which shows more of the cities than most maps. However, in the Kansas City, Ks area there is a major street called "Parallel Parkway" through old sections of the area. Possibly, there was a town in the area by that name which no longer exists. Sedgewick, Kansas -- There is a town "Sedgwick" in Harvey County; also, the county immediately south of Harvey County is Sedgwick County. Note the spelling: Sedgwick. Hope this is of some help. Tim, I took a look at the Maine entries and immediately recognized many of the towns from my Maine research. Some are obviously from published sources that I recognized as being inaccurately spelled when I first read them. Here are some answers for you: Belmond is probably Belmont, which is in Waldo County, just east of Belgrade. Broomfield I recognize from Pierce's work on the Whitneys of Moose River, Maine. I believe I am correct in stating that Broomfield should be Brownfield. Farrington is probably Farmington. My family was from Freeman. It is not an incorporated community, and is not on a map that I have seen today. I believe it lies to the northeast of Strong, Maine in Franklin County. Lubec lies near the Canadian border, just south of Eastport in Washington County. Mechanics Falls is in Androscoggin Co., just west of Auburn. New Castle ahould be Newcastle, which overlooks Damariscotta in Lincoln County. Otisfield is in Oxford County, just north of Casco. Philips and Phillips Village should be what today is Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine, south of Rangeley. Sherman Hills should read Sherman Mills, which is on Rt. 95 in Aroostook Co., Maine. Trinity came from Pierce's work on Joel Whitney, and should read Unity, not Trinity. Unity is on Rt. 202 in Waldo Co., Maine. West Gardiner is just to the west of Gardiner in Kennebec Co. If you can give me the context for the places I haven't mentioned, I may be able to figure them out. I hope this is of some help. Will try to provide some leads regarding the places in Kansas. Onawa, Kansas -- There is a town "Onaga"; also county "Ottawa". I don't find Onawa. Parallel, Kansas -- Can find no Parallel, Ks in my Hammond Atlas which shows more of the cities than most maps. However, in the Kansas City, Ks area there is a major street called "Parallel Parkway" through old sections of the area. Possibly, there was a town in the area by that name which no longer exists. Sedgewick, Kansas -- There is a town "Sedgwick" in Harvey County; also, the county immediately south of Harvey County is Sedgwick County. Note the spelling: Sedgwick. Hope this is of some help. Carol
