    3. Fortress Monroe (Fort Monroe) is on Old Point Comfort and was built to guard Hampton Roads. Jefferson Davis was held prisoner there after the Civil War. It was in Elizabeth City County, now the city of Hampton VA. Its still there. I can't find Perryville VA. There is a Sperryville in Rappahannock County. The only South Mountain I can find is in Rockbridge County and may just be a mountain not be a community. I hope this helps, Alice Warner

    3. Elk Horn is in Shelby Co., Iowa. It appears to be two separate words, as opposed to "Elkhorns" in some neighboring states. (Anyone with Danish connections might like to visit their Immigrant Museum-- http://dkmuseum.org/ .) I suspected Clarence Hollow might be in the Town of Clarence, in Erie County-- and boy is it ever. It's one of the oldest settlements in the county, and still thriving-- serious antiquers on the list may be interested: http://www.clarencehollow.org/ Cortlandville is a Town in Cortland County, and surrounds, but does not include, the City of Cortland. (Is that clear? No, it's upstate... If you find the city/village/hamlet/town business confusing, this page should help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_divisions_of_New_York ) I've found no trace of a "Jersey City, New York"; that's almost certainly a misreading of "Jersey City, N.J.". However, there is a Jersey Colony, pop. 75, near Southold in Suffolk County, N.Y. "Plasky" would be Pulaski, Oswego Co., N.Y. My stepsiblings grew up there. It's pronounced "p'-LAS-ky", with a long "I" at the end. "Sherborn, New York", if it isn't Sherborn, Mass., must be Sherburne in Chenango County. It's both a Town and a Village. "Huntington, Pennsylvania"-- better be careful here. There is a city, Huntingdon, in Huntingdon County-- note the "D". But there are also less-populated Townships called "Huntington", with a "T", in Adams and Luzerne Counties. "Menosha" is probably Menasha, the name of both a Town and a City in Winnebago County, Wisc. It might also mean Kenosha, in Kenosha County. I made an error in my last message; my ancestress Lucretia Whitney Worden and her family were on the 1860 census in East Saginaw, but still in N.Y. in 1850. I would like to know which other Whitneys might have been in East Saginaw at the time. 2. The Old "Ninety Six" District was one of the 7 Judicial Districts created by the State of South Carolina, in 1769. Up to the 1760's, South Carolina was served by one court located in Charleston. The constant influx of new immigrants and settlers pushing further into the back country looking for settlement lands required that the court system be expanded statewide to better serve the people. The Cherokee land cessions of 1777 (Western tip of South Carolins) were added to the Ninety Six. The 96th was huge covering the present day counties of Abbeville, Greenwood, McCormick, Edgefield, Aiken, Saluda, Laurens, Newberry, Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union. The South Carolina Judicial Districts were abolished in 1798. Jeanne Neilon ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    2. Sullivan's Island South Carolina is a barrier island in Charleston County, South Carolina. It's southern shoreline is Charleston Harbor and eastern shoreline is the Atlantic Ocean. This strategic location at the opening of Charleston Harbor was used in the American Revolution for Fort Sullivan, which evolved into extensive defense works to protect Charleston and was renamed Fort Moultrie during the Civil War. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

This was a family of Mormon Pioneers who settled the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. Newell K. Whitney father of Orson F. Whitney Married my second great grandmother Henrietta Keyes Whitney after the death of her first husband and paid her expenses to travel west with a Wagon train Company. After a brief time in the Salt Lake Valley many pioneers went out to settle Northern and Central Utah and South Eastern Idaho were Rexburg is located. Orson F. was very likely among them. Also that branch of the Whitney family was in New York for a time. It is probably no coincidence that the Oneida County where Rexburg was located at the time, shared the same name as Oneida County in New York I believe it is a safe bet that Orson F. Whitney son Of Newell K. and other children went to South Eastern Idaho and settled Rexburg, Oneida County, Idaho. This area is much closer to the Salt Lake Valley, (a 3 hour drive while, Roseberry is quite far North and on the Western edge of the state. Today it would be at least 8+ hour drive from Salt Lake City and most likely not settled by early Mormon Pioneers during that time period. Hope this helps a bit Gail Anderson

    1. Re: [WHITNEY] Location Help
    2. Tim, Betsy and others. I can help with one of these. Caledonia Station (Michigan) is an early name for what is now simply Caledonia. It is located in the southeast part of Kent County, about 25 miles from Grand Rapids. It was the residence of my last ancestor with the Whitney surname, i.e., Alice Whitney Betzner, my grandmother -- my "Nana" who lived with my parents and cared for me as a child. Her husband died in 1926, and when the depression came along, his provision for his widow and child became insufficient. She was always in the household from my earliest memories. She and her husband, Allan Bowman Betzner, and my mother and father, Doris Betzner Green and Ernest Goodwin Green are all buried there in the Caledonia town cemetery. Somewhere, somehow, all of these places will probably be identified by various members of the WRG. As they are, many warm family stories like mine will enrich our collective knowledge of the Whitneys. How fortunate! Allan E. 3. Tim - Having been born and raised in Ohio I can fill you in on two of the locations through personal knowledge. As far as I know there is no Danube, Ohio. You are probably referring to the Whitney's found in Danville, Brown Twp., Knox Co. found on page 205 in Pierce, under Thomas #1331 and his children. I have found the same Danube information listed for them in another source. I concur that the Londonville is really Loudonville in Ashland County, close to Danville and in which one of his sons, John, lived. I was a resident of Ashland, Ashland Co. and know Loudonville well. I have been to the old Whitney farm in Brown Twp. searching for clues to my own ancestry. To no avail I'm sorry to say. I have also met with descendant of Thomas in Danville and it was she who directed me to the farm and gave me information of that family. Ben A. Whitney in Simi Valley, CA

    1. [WHITNEY] John Whitney of Warren ME
    2. Lis Whitney
    3. This past winter I purchased a copy of the Annals of Warren Maine where there is a mention of a John Whitney. According to this book, he was born in 1777 in Lincoln, MA. He appears on the census information (via WRG website) as living in Union ME in 1810 and moved to Warren in 1819. He married Lydia Russell and resided near Mt. Pleasant. Died Nov, 6 (according to the book) or 7 (according to headstone) 1851. His children: John (2nd)m. Jane Kiff resided in Centreville, RI James b. Sept 1, 1813; m Belinda S (Orff)Day Feb 22, 1852 resided Northeast Warren Russell, b. Jan. 1816; m. Henrietta L. McKellar of Camden Sept. 26, 1852 and d. Nov 22, 1859 James' child: Lavinia E. b. March 20, 1855 in Warren Russell's children: Lydia J. b. Nov and d. Dec 1853; Alden R. b Feb 14, 1855 Today I photographed the head stone for John Whitney, one I suspect belongs to his wife Lydia (no information, just a marker), his son Russell and Russell's infant daughter. The other members of the family aren't buried in this cemetery or they are unlisted and unmarked. There was a veteran's marker for John Whitney. I also found a headstone for John Willard Whitney and the markers for his parents John F. and Jane B. He died June 22, 1868 at 30 yrs and 1 mo. The Annals of Warren, ME do not mention any of them and I so far haven't located their homes on the 1851 map of the town that came with the book. These people aren't related to me and my interest is that they lived not very far from me. I have pictures of the stones and a copy of an old map from 1851 where Mrs. Russell and John Whitneys' houses were if this is of interest to anyone. I'm curious to know more about them and so far, haven't found much information - I've yet to go to our historical society as they keep archaic hours - if any. I've tried searching through the WGR website and find no mention of these Whitneys other than John in the 1810, 1830, 1840 Census information. The Lincoln, MA vital records that are on the website as well has no listing for John Whitney being born in 1777. Hope the photographs can be of use to someone, just contact me and I'll email them on. Best to all on a warm Sunday afternoon, Lisbeth Whitney
