    1. [WHITNEY-L] Elizabeth Harding
    2. Kenneth Whitney
    3. Hello Larry, I just saw this inquiry and it reminded me that I haven't conversed with you lately. First, the info on Elizabeth Harding is from Hugh McLellan's History of Gorham, ME. Page 557 gives her parents as Seth Harding and Elizabeth Wilkit, who came from, of all places, Eastham, MA! On pg 829, McLellan makes her the second wife of Josiah Whitney (first wife Hannah Barstow). As you now well know, this is where much confusion starts. For members of the group, I got involved with Larry in this ever-enlarging puzzle by posting a message entitled The Josiah Whitney Puzzle on 8 Feb 1999. The message is archived on the WRG site. Since then, the puzzle has grown, as we have been unearthing more Josiahs than we know what to do with! So far, key info is missing, so the puzzle goes unsolved. Larry, I checked the resouces for Canada at the D.A.R Library in Wash., D.C., and nothing turned up. I intend checking the Library of Congress for Canadian records, but who knows when I will get there. I've left messages on bulletin boards around the internet, but nothing so far. Did you ever find out anything about the Cape Ann Society? Perhaps someone in the WRG knows something about this organization? Anyway, I'll let you know when I get to the LOC, and good hunting. 3. Dear Larry: I'm afraid I can't help with Elizabeth Harding either. I have no sources cited as references for the information I entered. Metelski" <nmetelski@cybertours.com> To: <jwmuse@compuserve.com> Sent: Saturday, September 02, 2000 1:50 PM Subject: Elizabeth Harding who married a Josiah Whitney We have been searching for sometime the origins of Josiah Whitney who made his way to New Brunswick/Nova Scotia probably from 1768-1774. Pierce's genealogy claims a Josiah Whitney m. both an Elizabeth Harding and a Hannah Barstow, probably incorrectly. We recently found an obscure reference to Josiah in Bridgton Me. along with his 6 children. The first 2 children were born in St. John's according to the old record, in 1776 and 1778 respectively. One child was born in Beverly Mass. in 1786 and his last child in Bridgton Maine in 1789. Research has shown that his wife was probably Sarah, leaving the possibility that Barstow or Harding died previous to Josiah's entry into N.B. Many people are working on this project such as Ken Whitney, around the country. The find in Bridgton was one advance in determining who Josiah Whitney was in relationshipto the others, but parantage remains a mystery! I thought by locating Elizabeth Harding and working in a different direction the area and parantage could be ascertained. Any help would be appreciated, or additional questions you may have will gladly be answered. Larry Tracy Jr.

    3. Hi Helen! What a warm day for us here in northern Vermont! Sitting by my fan looking up this information for you! I have Jacob Whitney born October 14, 1804 in Lisbon, Maine. His parents were Samuel and Lydia (Curit, Curtis, Curate) Whitney. Jacob's first marriage was to Mary Gould on July 18, 1830. Mary died in 1838 in Lisbon Falls. They had two children, Increase Gould Whitney, born Nov. 25, 1831 and Mary Jane Whitney born March 29, 1834. Jacob's second marriage was to Christiana Jordan on September 6, 1838. They had three children, Martha McClellan Whitney born Sept. 20, 1839, Washington Dain Whitney born December 29, 1842 and Christiana Ann Whitney born March 20, 1848. I have no information on how or where Jacob and Christiana (Jordan) Whitney died. I have not found them buried in Lisbon or Lisbon Falls. Do you have any other information on where John and Polly Curie lived? I am assuming Curie is the maiden name, and that he was John Whitney. Hope this is of some help. from, Carolyn Helen S Rogers wrote: > Who did Jacob born in 1804 marry? 1. [WHITNEY-L] Possible resource for finding late 19th C. people
    2. Dear WRG: Ancestry.com publishes a daily newsletter in which they announce their "free" databases that are opened for a short period to anyone. This is done to advertise their wares and secure new members. Nonetheless, it is possible that they might hit a resource for that short period that would be useful to someone in the WRG. It doesn't take very long to open the e-mail and view the free databases right at the top of the newsletter to see if one of them might provide an opportunity not otherwise to be found. In this issue: - Databases of the Day: ----- Amesbury, Massachusetts Directory, 1891 ----- Chatham Township, Bothwell County, Ontario, Canada Census, 1901 ----- Wisconsin Marriage Index, 1820-1907 ----- Atlanta Journal-Constitution (GA) Obituaries, 1998-99 To subscribe to this newsletter, visit http://www.ancestry.com and type your e-mail address in the box provided, or send an e-mail message to: mailto:ancestry_daily_news@anclist001.ancestry.com with the word "subscribe" in the subject line. 2. Does anyone know anything about Laura Whitney? She is the daughter of Peter Whitney and Mary Blair. She married a Peter Atwood in Chester, MA in 1814. I know little else about her (ie: birth date, death date, etc.). She had one child that I know of with Peter Atwood (Sophia, b. 1814). Peter Atwood remarried in 1825. I don't know what ever happened to Laura. Her parents died in Chester in 1826. Thank you. Bev (chozijoy@aol.com)

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Ezra Whitney
    2. Thanks Shawn. A cemetery record in our archives indicates that Ezra died in Ontario County and that his wife was name Temperance. Another candidate for a while was Ezra, son of James Whitney and Eunice Johnson, of Newfield, NY. But another old cemetery record showed that Ezra and his wife and several children buried in Newfield. That's also in our archives. I have an old family record that says the father of my Ezra was also named Ezra and that his wife was Juliette Stewart. I have run into this record among several living descendants. However, it also contains a lengthy and romantic fairy tale about how and "Lady Julia Pelton", born in England, fell in love with her father's groom, 'Lord Ezra Whitney" and they both absconded to America and were married in 1840. "Lady Juliet Stewart is listed as a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce in this tale. The truth is that the wife of Ezra Whitney 'Lady' Julia Pelton', was born in Bath, NH, the daughter of first cousins John Pelton and Martha Pelton.

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Descendants of Ezra Whitney
    2. After several years, I have now collected over 600 descendants of Ezra Leonard Whitney, of Livingston and Ontario Counties, NY, b. 1790 -1800, d. abt. 1849 in MI. Most recently I learned that his oldest son, John Whitney, b. abt 1828, married Jennet Wilder, the daughter, I believe, of either Luther or Nathan Wilder of Michigan and Genessee County, NY. I have many of their descendants, one of whom, Raymond Starr, was Att. General and Supreme Court Justice for the state of Michigan. Naturally, only a part of the descendants of this Ezra are surnamed Whitney, but I would like to post this database somewhere. I still have not discovered any siblings of this Ezra, and hope that someday I might. Also, I believe there are about two hundred more descendants to gather when I have the time. I have the file now in FTM 7. Where should I post this? Thanks, A. Whitney Brown.

    3. Hello A Whitney Brown, This is probably a little presumptuous of me but here goes anyway. Have you been able to rule out the possibility that your Ezra Leonard WHITNEY was not the son of Joel WHITNEY and Sybil WHITMORE. These two were married 1790 in Conway, Mass and both died in Seneca Castle and are buried in the Crittenden Cemetery in Ontario County. They had a son named Ezra b. 14 Oct 1791. I show no death record for him. And no other information is available in Pierce's book. This Joel is on of the sons of our Capt Jonathan WHITNEY who migrated from Conway Mass to Ontario County. It is also this group of WHITNEY's who ventured on to the Hillsdale Michigan area. You've probably already beat this one with a stick. But just wanted to mention it in case..... Oh! double checking the exact text in Pierce, it says that Ezra, b. Oct 14, 1791; married but no children living. Lets see.... he would have been 104 at the time of publication. Probably didn't have any children after publication (tee hee) but HEY! Pierce has been know to be wrong!!! 3. Carolyn, More on John Curit... A John Curate resided in Cape Elizabeth and was lost on the "Cumberland" in the Rev War, his widow Martha then petitioned for pay due her late husband when she was residing in Portland. Further listed is John Curate from Massachusetts serving in Capt Watkin's Company. These notations are listed on page 176, "Soldier, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War-Maine"compiled by Fisher & Fisher. Next, that marriage I spoke of on Chebeague Island, is listed as John CURATE of North Yarmouth to Jane Hamilton of North Yarmouth 14 June, 1802 in "Vital Records of North Yarmouth, Maine to the year 1850" second Edition Edited by Ruth Wilder Sherman. [Chebeague was a part of the original territory of North Yarmouth] So there was a spelling change...I know that the name was known on Chebeague Island as CURIT. A John Curit owned land in the present town of Yarmouth, "a few hundred feet from where the North Road turns from East Main Street, near the former residence of John Curit". This passage found in "Ancient North Yarmouth and Yarmouth, Maine 1636-1936 A History" by William Hutchinson Rowe, page102. This passage is a description of the capture of three boys by Native Americans in 1742. Good Luck, Jan

    3. Hello Carolyn, I have a couple of suggestions: In her genealogy "The Hinkleys of Maine", Marlene Alma Hinkley Groves writes on pg 53 that Lydia Curit was born 30 Jan 1776. I don't have her source for that date, but she source codes everything, so it is probably available. Starting with her source may be helpful. Also, try the Weymouth Technologies website at www.weymouthtech.com. Click on Weymouth Genealogy Database. You will find some Curit info, including a Lydia Curit. Perhaps corresponding through this site will be fruitful. Also, do a search at www.google.com for "Curit genealogy." This brings up some web sites for possible communications. Good luck, and let us know of any positive result.
