    3. Good evening y'all - I recently changed my ISP and I changed my address on the list. I've been getting mail for the Whitney List here and there, but not much. I'm wondering, has it been particularly quiet this past week or am I having a server problem? Thanks, Lyn Whitney Anderson

    1. [WHITNEY-L] William Whitney
    2. Patty Gravois
    3. Searching for a William Whitney, possibly born around 1800, give or take several years. He married a Sarah Compton, d/o Joseph Compton and Anna VanDusen "of New York," but Sarah had been married to Joseph Ellender/Elinger/Eleonor first and they probably lived in Lancashire, Pennsylvania. They favored common Anglo names (William, John, Sarah, Thomas, Louise, George Washington ) for their children. The name "Williams" pops up often as a first name. Could possibly be a maiden name of some relation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Patty Gravois.

    2. Kenneth Whitney
    3. WRG: Larry Tracy has found in Bridgton, Cumberland Co., ME a transcription of early Bridgton records. The original records are unavailable at this time for public inspection. We are submiting to you a transcription of the WHITNEY entries in these records. The town clerks' names who recorded the families are available in the transcription, but not copied here. Our hope is that if you can identify a family in this record, you will let us know. It may help us in our search for the elusive Josiah Whitney. Ken Whitney Silver Spring, MD The transcription of the records is dated 12 January 1963 in Bridgton, Maine by Blynn Edwin Davis. The transcription is entitled Bridgton Maine Families. The following is the opening statement: Sources: Early records kept by various town clerks, as recorded in the old leather-bound book, purchased March 15, 1796, and now kept in the town vault. Also, the personal records kept by Dr. Theodore Ingalls in his own record book. Some of the latest records were taken from an old record book kept in the office of the town clerk, J. Bennett Pike. Alonzo, born Nov 26 1815 in Bridgton Here endeth this record of early Bridgton families as found in these ancient record books. It is a safe assumption that Dr. Samuel Farnsworth, the Elder, began this record in his meticulously fine, copper-plate handwriting. He became Town Clerk in March of 1795, only one year after the incorporation of the Town, and he served in that capacity for nearly twenty years. Dr. Farnsworth took the census of the inhabitants of Bridgton at the date of the incorporation in 1794, and was thereby inspired to make a detailed record of the early families. This conclusion is based on internal evidence, because Dr. Farnsworth never signed his name to any of the records, as did his successors. He did this as a labor of love, above and beyond the call of duty. His pupil and co-worker, Dr. Thomas Ingalls, continued this work when the failing hand of Dr. Farnsworth dropped the pen in 1817, and he held the office of Town Clerk about fifteen years, adding many families to the list, and recording births and deaths in the families already listed. He carefully compiled his own record of Bridgton families, including several that are not found in the larger book. he was a careful workman. January 12 1963 Bridgton, Maine Blynn Edwin Davis

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Re: Mary WHITNEY mystery
    2. Ron Graham
    3. Deane, Many thanks for your attention to this Mary WHITNEY mystery. It may be that Mary was no more than a transcription error as Robert Ward had suggested. Or it may be that Mary was more of a free soul and preferred not to have the church make record of her family. Or there may be an even more unusual explanation that we have yet to discover?? The records that I have are not copies of originals, but rather transcriptions. They are primarily of deaths and can be found in the NEHGR (vol 30 pp 427-8; vol 48 pp 27-9, 340-1). I have yet to see any original VRs for Statham and surrounding areas. I would very much like to. Is there anyone that might have some access or knowledge of these Stratham Vital Records? Much of this secondary information comes from Marija Sanderling at the Rochester Public Library in Rochester, NH. She has also checked, without success, the following: History of Rochester, NH by F.McDuffee; Abstracts of the Probate Records of Strafford County 1771-1799 by Helen Evans; Directory of Ancestral Heads of NE Families, 1620-1700 by Frank Holmes; Genealogy of the Ricker Family by Percy Ricker & Elwin Holland; NH Marriage Licenses and Intentions 1709-1961 by Pauline Oesterlin; Pioneers of Maine and NH 1623-1660 by Charles Pope; Shannon Genealogy, compiled by George Hodgdon; The Wentworth Genealogy by John Wentworth; History of Rockingham & Strafford Counties by Duane Hurd. Thank you again Marija. I have also written to the Wiggin Memorial Library of Stratham, NH but as yet have not had a reply. If anyone else has any information or useful theories about these individuals please post it to the List. It seems there are a number of people who are now very interested. I am hoping that one of you reading this is more knowledgeable than I. And might shed some light on this current mystery of the month. until later, Ron ----- Original Message ----- From: Deane Merrill <merrill@crocker.com> To: Robert L. 2. Tim Doyle
    3. The following was recently posted to the Whitney Genealogy Forum at http://genforum.genealogy.com/whitney/messages/1334.html. I believe this to be the family of John-6 (Asa-5, Nathan-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) Whitney and his wife unknown (Rich) Whitney. The names of the children match those found in Pierce at: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/pierce/p231-235.htm#P1598 If this is indeed the correct person, this Bible record adds significantly to our knowledge of his family. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Post by Jon Grant: I found a Whitney family Bible in North Carolina. The owner of the antique store said that he found it in Virginia. I can find no reference to locations, only names and dates. If this is your line, please contact me at govols@carolina.rr.com . 2. Sandy: If that surname came from Ancestral File or the IGI at SLC or in one of the various databases collected by a commercial entity such as Ancestry.com, I don't think it has any basis in fact. The discovery of her surname is always possible, but as one who has spent dozens of hours in the library of the Society of Genealogists in London, searching for a record of this marriage, I really would have to see some significant original source cited before I would start taking it seriously. It's probably about as valid as the entry that says she came from St. Margaret's Warwick, when there is NO parish of St. Margaret's anywhere in all of Warwickshire. St. Margaret's Westminster is the parish where John's father and mother worshipped, where their children were christened, and is located on the grounds of Westminster Abbey in London. 1. [WHITNEY-L] John Whitney(Son of Josiah)
    2. Larry Tracy
    3. Dear Ken and WRG I spent Monday at Maine Archives in an attempt to locate John Whitney, fourth child of the elusive Josiah. Nancy and I are cautiously optimistic that we have located him in Dexter, Maine! The year of birth is correct but we are awaiting further confirmation as to month and day should it exist. I have contacted the Historical Society there in Dexter and found the most congenial and dedicated curator and researcher that I have come across in some time! They have found some preliminary information regarding his residence, charactor and profession. His origins were unknown to the society thus, hopefully, we may be able to share information. Briefly, the reason for generating this E mail is that we found this John to be a Methodist minister of 46 years as his stone relates. As you may recall, John's brother Moses (my line) named all his children with Biblical names, as did father Josiah. Other oddities as not being able to find concrete land purchases for Moses when there should be lends itself tospeculate about an itenerant ministers life. John seems to have only a land purchase later in life when he settled in Dexter. Question: Do we have a Methodist lay minister in Josiah Whitney? This is in light of the fact that Josiah has been noted in at least 3 different locations in N.B./Nova Scotia. As you know, Methodist ministers in this time frame stayed only 2 to 3 years at the most in any one location Regards, Larry Tracy.

    3. As a follow-up to my e-mail below, I snail mailed the compiler of the Ancestor Chart asking for sources. I found the chart in Mansfield, OH, at the Ohio Genealogical Society. This chart was submitted in 1990 and her address is current, according to Internet phone white pages. I will inform the mailing list when/if I get a response. 3. Jeanne & Robert, Thanks for pointing this out, somehow I missed her when I looked through this database before. According to my grandmother's Bible, Sophia died 29 Apr 1870. Jesse, son of Patrick and Hannah Levistone Fleming, died 26 Feb 1845. According to Tewksbury Vital Records, they had at least two more children than I originally told you about-Parker Whitney Flemings b. 29 Jan 1830 and Sophia bap. 1 Jul 1832.
