    1. [WHITNEY-L] Ford sisters and Whitney brothers
    2. Chris Branagan
    3. Hi Allan! Things are so quiet at Whitney-L that I've been using the time to read up on some of the archived Whitney-L messages. I noticed back in May 1999 you did some research on Nathan (Nathaniel, Benjamin, John) regarding land purchase in Saco/York, Maine. At the end of that message you mentioned that you were able to confirm that Sarah and Letty Ford were sisters, the daughters of John and Joanna (Andrews) Ford of Kittery. Were you able to find out anything more about them? What about the history of the Ford family? Were they immigrants? Land owners? Were there other Fords in Maine at the time? Where can I go to find out more about the Fords? As you know Sarah and Letty married brothers Nathaniel and John, sons of Benjamin. Nathaniel and John must have had some interesting experiences with Captain Preble and the boys in the Maine woods! It is the family of John and Letty in which I am most interested. By the way, I love your suggestion of a Whitney reunion. Did you get any response?Perhaps it will happen one of these summers. There must be a nice resort down there in the D.C./ Maryland area that could handle a group of 80 -100 for such a gathering. It would be great to have both you and Robert speak on your findings, and also on research techniques for the amateur. There are several others who are experts on the Maine Whitneys (like Jan and Ken from Maryland) and it would be interesting to hear some presentations about the family of Henry and the Southern Whitneys. And Jeanne and Tim Doyle. We could easily fill an entire weekend. Wouldn't it be great to have John Whitney come over from England, you know the gentleman corresponding from Oxford! Haven't you met him? Keep up the good work. from, Carolyn Whitney Branagan

    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Maryland WHITNEYs
    2. Dear Shawn: To try to answer your question about available information about Maryland Whitneys, it depends a little on the time frame one is trying to work in. I have discovered, for example, that in 1850 the only two places Whitneys are to be found is in Baltimore and Somerset Counties. Since I now live in Somerset county, I am starting to try and develop a resource for these families. There is an excellent research library connected to Salisbury State University, but it has an annual membership fee, and they run from Jan. 1 to Dec 31. However, I have been told that if I join in November my membership will extend through the next year. So, I paid the daily fee and spent about three hours working on the early Whitneys, and will continue as soon as I can get in on the annual fee. If your friend would like to write to me directly, with some information with which I could begin to look for specifics, I will try to help him/her. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Green

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Yates Cty, NY Court Records
    2. Shawn Whitney
    3. Here is a listing of the Surrogate Court records for Yates County NY. They may be ordered online at http://www.linkny.com/~history/srrogate.html I am not going to attempt to reformat these at this time. If someone would like to have these listed on the website, I will be glad to reformat them later. For now, please know that the first line is the person named on a given surrogate court petition. Some are wills, some are guardianships, etc. The next line is the year of the court filing. The next line is the box and folder location of the petition for ordering purposes. The final lists the names of all persons named in the petition. Yates County has indexed the first 180 boxes of court records that they have, up to about 1903. If anyone is up to the task, there are many many more to be indexed. These are great people, I have met them and they let you order online, the records are inexpensive and they are prompt in returning records photocopied in such a manner that you can actually read them! Visit the website if you have any ancestors in the Mid-New York area. Penn Yan, the county seat for Yates, was quite the hubbub in its day. They have many of the records for Ontario and Chemung counties also. 2. Hi all I have not seen much action going on either and so I thought I would let you all know that I found a Whitney cousin. I have been looking for about five years for my family. My first cousin, found my query that I had posted and we have visited together a couple of times already. The funny thing in all of this is that her daughter lived about a mile from me. I am looking for Whitney Fuller connection from Pa and NY from the 1800s. My grandfather was Mantle or Minitel Whitney and he married Mary Fuller. They had five sons Bernice b 1885, Irving b 1888, Lewis b 1892, Norman b 1896 in Pa and Robert b 1901 in NY. I hope there are a few more cousins out there looking for me....Mary

I didn't read Robert's letter quite carefully enough and somehow got the idea that the book was being reprinted in a deluxe edition comparable to the original. I just reread Robert's letter and it says nothing of the kind -- in fact it mentions that it is a First Edition, one of 600 copies. Sloppy reading on my part. Still, for one who wants only the information to be found exclusive of the artwork, etc., there is the "reprint from microfilm" option at probably one-eighth the cost. Sorry for the confusion. What is the URL? I would be interested." The WRG (Whitney Research Group), of which you are a member if you are subscribed to the Whitney-L maillist, has a collective website at the following URL http://www.whitneygen.org/ On it you will find archives of all the maillist material since we put this group together some five years ago, extracted Whitney entries from the VR's of nearly 300 MA towns, as well as some for ME, NH, VT; Whitney extracts from the Barbour Index to CT records, Whitney census extracts for the whole country for a number of years, databases of the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown (1635), Henry Whitney of Long Island and CT (ca 1640), and a group of Southern Whitneys who came to VA from Bermuda ca 1730-40; a complete transcription of the 600 page book on the family of John and Elinor, written by Frederick Clifton Pierce (pub. 1895); plus lots of other useful Whitney material. The website is very easy to use, it has an excellent interface that explains what each part contains, and it has an extremely useful search engine devised by one of our members. I urge you to spend some happy hours discovering what the WRG has already gathered and made available. It is very possible that the answers to some of your current questions may be found there. 1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Follow-up to R. Ward's posting about the Melville Book
    2. Dear Louise: You wrote and asked, "What do you mean by "our website". Good luck and Happy Hunting. Allan E. Green

    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Follow-up to R. Ward's posting about the Melville Book
    2. Dear John: Of course you are right! Allan

    3. Robert, This is - relatively speaking - quite good value! My grandfather wrote to Melville in 1896 requesting a copy. Melville replied (I have a copy of his letter) stating that grandfather could indeed have one if he would send a money order for $4.00! He must have done this, my cousin having inherited it. It includes some excellent colour plates of various quarterings (64 in one example!) and is a nice collector's item (limited ed. of 600) Regards John

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Follow-up to R. Ward's posting about the Melville Book
    2. Dear WRG: I, too, would like to own one of these wonderful sounding volumes. However, I don't have the $500.00 to spend on it either. I do have a copy of this work, nonetheless, that my wife had made for me from the microfilm at University Microfilms of Ann Arbor, Michigan. I believe that it cost somewhere in the vicinity of $50.00. Most of the plates are pretty awful, done in muddy grayscale, and with no color, of course. OTOH, it does have all the contents of the book in readable form and has the various charts tipped in at the end in tiny but still readable print. Remembering that we have been disconnected from the line presented therein between John-1's father, Thomas Whitney of Westminster, and the father named for him in Melville, this is still a lot of fun to read and has much good information. For those of you who haven't yet heard about this separation, the relevant articles from The American Genealogist by Donald Lines Jacobus and Paul Reed are available on our website. I thought you all should know that there was a lower cost alternative to the new reprint Robert told us about. Allan E. Green

    3. Dear WRG - I have been looking for my ggrandmother, Arvilla Melissa WHITNEY for some time now. There's one particular lead I've been meaning to follow up on. Arvilla is, of course, a rather unusual name and so I searched the LDS databases and there is, in fact, an Arvila Whitney (spelling with one L instead of 2), b. 1823 in Chelsea, Orange Co., VT. Interestingly, her parents are Isaac Whitney and Polly Blood. My ggrandmother married a George Blood, also of Vermont. The combination of an Arvilla and another Blood in this family makes me seriously interested in this family. My Arvilla is said to have been born in Brooklyn, NY, but I've been unable to find any records on her there. The ARvila found in the LDS database had a brother, Charles (b. 1822), who married an Arvilla too. She had 2 other brothers, Alvah (b. 1832)and Andrew (b. 1818), both of whom also married. (These are in the John Whitney of WAtertown database.) No children are listed for any of the three boys. Does anyone have any information regarding their children? My Arvilla's birth is in 1862 and could conceivably be a child of one of the boys or a granddaughter in that family. Again, the name Arvilla, the name Blood and the location of Vermont certainly raises my hopes of finding my long lost Arvilla. Any leads gratefully accepted. Thank you LYn Whitney Anderson

    2. Robert L. Ward
    3. Dear WRG, I have had a request in with Bibliofind, Inc., for Henry Melville's _The Ancestry of John Whitney_ (1896). I recently received word that a copy is now available: "Melville, Henry: The Ancestry of John Whitney, who with his wife Elinor, and sons John, Richard, Nathaniel, Thomas, and Jonathan, emigrated from London, England, in the year 1635, and settled in Watertown, Massachusetts; the first of the name in America, and the one from; . With colored plates of coats of arms, photogravures, maps, tables and other illustrations, some folding. 4to, New York: The De Vinne Press, 1896. First Edition, one of 600 copies. Original full vellum, uncut, with ties, stampled on upper and lower covers with the Whitney arms in blind; covers slightly warped and spine a little soiled, else fine. The History of the Whitney Family. A carefully researched and excellently illustrated history, dating from the first mention of a Whitney in the Domesday Book of 1086 A.D., of one of America's most distinguished families; descendants include inventor Eli Whitney, and financier Cornelius. No expense was spared to make this volume a monumental one, and it is a model of its kind.History - British. Nevertheless, it seems possible that someone in the WRG might be interested in owning this volume, so I am posting this listing. It does detail the family of WHITNEY of Whitney, Herefordshire, from very early down to about 1600, with good documentation. It is also a very handsome book! Regards, Robert Robert L. 3. Hi Lyn! I haven't gotten many messages for at least a week. I think everyone must be out enjoying the fantastic fall foliage! Oh well, it gives me a chance to read some more of the archives. Very interesting. Hopefully, activity will pick up again with the colder weather. In the meantime, is there any information on what happened to the child of Elinor Whitney (Benjamin, John) named Daniel? He was born Feb. 27, 1704 or 5 in Sherborn. There is no father listed, that I can find, and the mother kept her maiden name. from Carolyn Whitney Branagan Lyn Legere wrote: > Good evening y'all - > > I recently changed my ISP and I changed my address on the list.
