    1. [WHITNEY-L] Leon Rouleau Whitney
    2. I am asking for help from anyone who has access to the Philadelphia City Directories of 1919, 1920 and 1921 to see if a Leon Rouleau Whitney is listed. Also I am wondering if there was such directories available for Trenton or Camden NJ, for the a fore mentioned dates, and if there is, would some kind soul who has access to them be able to look up the same individual, Leon Rouleau Whitney. I am also seeking information about an organization in the 1940's and 1950's in Philadelphia, called the The Marine Travel Club. One last request is about a ship called the MS Gripsholm sailing out of Philadelphia immediately after WW II bringing back POW's, foreign born wives of GI's and missionaries. from Europe and India. Please respond in private and thank you. Richard Whitney Sr. richardwhitneysr@juno.com

    3. The Worm KAK can apparently attack both Microsoft Outlook and Netscape users. There are apparently several variants of this virus but see the writeup for one of them at the Symantec site at: www.symantec.com/avcenter/cgi-bin/virauto.cgi?vid=7378 John WHITNEY-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > WHITNEY-D Digest Volume 00 : Issue 248 SNIP SNIP>>>>>>>> > Fellow Listers, > Today I was the proud owner of a anti virus device. 3. Hi! The Isaac Whitney you found in Norridgewock, Me records married Elizabeth[known as Betsey] Parlin. Betsey was sister to Olive Parlin who married William Whitney[Samuel, Abner,John, Isaiah, Thomas, John). William and Olive were my ancestors. Betsey Parlin was b. 5 Dec 1786 at Concord, MA to Eleazer and Olive (Hildreth) Parlin. Isaac was b. 10 June 1790 at Freeport, ME. Both died and were buried in Freeman, ME. I did not have marriage info until your contribution, but it doesn't surprise me that they married in Norridgewock, as the Parlins were among the earliest settlers there. Did that film at LDS [#11577] contain much information about Norridgewock and any other adjacent towns..by chance? Thanks, Jan

While it was scanning all my files and folders,I read this about "the worm" This is an Internet worm that uses .bat files to search through a range of IP addresses of known ISPs to find an accessible computer. If a accessible computer shares its C drive, it copies its files onto the other computer. 1. [WHITNEY-L] F.C. Pierce
    2. Kenneth Whitney
    3. WRG: Jeanne Muse's query about the disposition of her genealogical research material started me thinking. Back in the late 19th century when F.C. Pierce was writing his Whitney genealogy, there must have been a great deal of paper generated. The project that he took on was huge, trying to accomplish the full pedigree of descendants of John and Elinor. Communication links for him must have been mostly by mail. Keeping the records and sources must have created quite a large collection. So, I wonder what ever happened to all of that material. It seems like many histories and genealogies were writen at that time, so what did authors commonly do with the source material? I know I would be hard pressed to put the torch to all of that material. Wouldn't it be unbelievable to be able to see the source material for Pierce's work? I'd love know where some of it came from. Anyone out there have any idea what was done with this material in those days? How could we find out? Ken Whitney Silver Spring, MD

    3. One solution would be to donate all your materials to your local genealogical library. They would be preserved there for future generations until one of your descendants decided to look up their ancestry. I have already donated a few marginal items from my genealogical collection to the Speical Collections & Genealogy Library here in Albuquerque. 3. Hi Malcolm; The Kak worm variants are exceptions- they are not attachments as such but a signature file. They would not be picked up by software that deletes attachments. They also do not need to be opened or executed to infect the target. They take advantage of a bug in Outlook and only Outlook users are at risk. 2. Hello Folks, There have been a couple of attempts to infect Rootsweb lately but Rootsweb says it believes it has caught them. The Bell list is the only list that it got through on, the worms are named KAK and pretty park. They only infect Microsoft Outlook's address book all other e-mail programs are not affected. It's odd that Jeanne was the only one that received it. Makes me think it might have come from outside the list. If you are using Outlook you should be careful to keep a good Anti-virus loaded because almost all address book attacks take place against Outlook. Michael Whitney

    2. Malcolm Bebb
    3. Hi All, Since this is a Rootsweb list, and I run a few RW lists, you might like to know that Rootsweb does not allow exectuable (binary) or HTML attachments to list traffic. This makes it most unlikely that you will get a virus via Rootsweb, and I have not heard of it happening in 2 1/2 years. There have been a few false alarms, of course, and viruses have been sent by list members responding off list. So the genral comments about precautions should still be followed, but this might help in tracking down where they came from. I also use Eudora, and have it set to only send plain text for normal messages, to avoid the risk of passing a virus on. I hear all the time about people losing years of research. I back up daily to tape and make CDROM copies of my genealogy stuff weekly that I store at a relatives house. Outlook is especially vulnerable because it can automatically open or execute attachments but there are little nasties out there aimed at everyone. This worm has been around a while but it seems to keep surfacing on these lists. Bob

    3. We are new to the list and would like to share our ancestral history as we know it. Marilyn is descended from Ebenezer & Huldah through their oldest son, Peter Whitney & his wife Margaret Haynes and their oldest daughter Sarah who married Pierre Ignace Valliere. Their children are indicated with an asterisk: *Ebenezer - born 16 Oct 1795 at Niagara-on-the-Lake. We have no further record of him. *Sarah - born 6 March 1797 at Niagara-on-the-Lake died 13 Nov 1841 - married Pierre Ignace (Angus) Valliere *Huldah - born 21 July 1799 at Niagara-on-the-Lake We have no further record of her *Mehitable- born ca 1807 in York County Ontario - married William Henry Heath. In many family histories of Peter Whitney's family there is often a vague reference to a son, Peter, however we have never been able to establish that there ever was such a person and until further proof we have omitted his name from the genealogy. We welcome any further input or amendments to this family history. Marilyn and Don Holmes Ontario

    3. Dear WRG: I know everybody gets nuisance e-mails about hoax viruses -- but my warning was a real one! The person who e-mailed me had NOT written through the list, he said, so you all were fortunate -- this time. He has fixed it, so it is no longer a threat. Everyone - give yourselves an early Christmas present. Buy anti-virus software -- use it -- and update it at least once a month. You'll feel safe and secure with the protection it provides. And ... back up your files regularly! ;-) Jeanne

This program, when updated with the latest data files, can detect the said worm and remove it without damage. Occasionally I have gotten messages that this process was working on an infected message, but it doesn't tell me which message or from whom it came. Usually I don't care, so I don't go on a virus hunt. This hasn't happened to me in the last week or so. In short, I can't tell you what e-mails to delete.
