Jo: I don't think you can just visit, you'll need to subscribe. I'll forward an invitation to you. I'm really excited to have a family site consisting of our 'current' generations! Jeanne, you can set the site up so that people can visit without joining. Go to the site administration. Sandie Marsha Clark wrote: > Jo: > I don't think you can just visit, you'll need to subscribe. Hi folks, Since I was gone on a very extended trip, I missed the posting of the url for Jeanne's MyFamily page. I have been unsuccessful in finding the Whitney page by just going to MyFamily because it wants me to subscribe and I prefer not to. Can't we just look without having to enroll? If anyone has the link I would appreciate it. Jo Hogle
Stu, I too monitor the rootsweb daily and this is the first time I've seen mention of Whitney's in IL. My father is a Whitney. Are you by chance related to Jonah Whitney who married Mary Ann Wadsworth? If not can you share with me your line? Pat
Dear Carolyn, Jeanne and all, I think this is a good plan. Any plans we make should be done with volunteers, the more the merrier. Maybe after the holidays as we talk more, we could put something on the MyFamily page for people to sign in if they want to volunteer and in what capacity. I love the site - thank you Jeanne. How nice to see pictures, get birthday/anniversaries, etc. A great resource. LYN Chris Branagan wrote: > Hi Jeanne, > > Thank you for taking the initiative to set up polls at the MyFamily.com > site. That should tell you his birthplace and parents names, among other useful things. Then you should find him in the census records of 1920, 1910, 1900, 1880, ... That will also be very useful, giving much data. That should get you back one generation. You can try to repeat this for each generation moving backwards. Good luck and good hunting! A reunion in MASS sounds good to me. My daughter has just moved to Providence and I will soon be in the area to poke around my heritage lands. (My mother was a Whitney - families went from Mass, to PA, to Illinois where I was born. My grandmother's family was from Rhode Island (Mathewson, Ballou, Arnold, Williams et al). I monitor the rootsweb daily and really glean quit a bit from all the chit chat. I jump in when it is about my families (which isn't very often). Stu Pyper, Aurora, Colorado
I am looking for John Whitney, born about 1784 in Deerfield, Mass. He was married to Polly Gibbs about 1815. I have been looking for him for a couple of years.
Hi Jeanne, Thank you for taking the initiative to set up polls at the MyFamily.com site. It is a good way to get an idea of what kind of interest there is about a Whitney Reunion. We respect your desire not to serve as Chair, and appreciate all you have done to this point. I think we need to let the polls run on the MyFamily.com site until after the holidays to get a good feel as to the response we might get for a Reunion. Is this OK with you? Then, perhaps in mid-January we could decide whether and where to have a reunion, based partly on the results from your polls. After that, we can ask for volunteers for an Organizing Committee. thanks, Carolyn Whitney Branagan Jeanne Muse wrote: > WRG - I will not, and cannot be the chairman for the reunion. Hello Allan, I'm glad you think the reunion is a good idea. It seems that the Boston area is a popular choice and the proximity to Watertown gives it a real advantage. I always enjoy reading your postings on the Whitney rootsweb, and had noticed that you hadn't sent anything for a while. Sorry to hear you have been under the weather, and also sorry about the death in your family. When you feel better, be sure to keep in touch. from, Carolyn Whitney Branagan (Mrs. Chris) ALLAGREEN@aol.com wrote: > Hi Joan: > > I remember the note, and I'm in favor of the idea. WRG - I will not, and cannot be the chairman for the reunion. I did not volunteer, and I don't appreciate being appointed. When and IF the membership decides to have a reunion, a committee can be picked at that time. I simply started the MyFamily.com site as a gathering place and somewhere to share info, including the question about whether there was interest in having a reunion of the Whitney Research Group. Jeanne
Hi Ray, What a nice email you just wrote. I hope I do that good at 84. One of my grandmothers was with it until she died at 96. I have an aunt that is 92. She lives about three minutes from me. She still keeps house. She still travels. She has to ask for a wheel chair at times, buit I think this is great. Maureen
I spent Thanksgiving at my sisters house. She lives about two minutes from Peabody center. Hanscom Air force base is about three exits from her house. On the way home, and she has lived there quite awhile, I missed the turn. I ended up going through Watertown and other area towns. I said to Amanda, we are going to take our time on the way home and just check out all the historic things we see. Next we were in Quincy. Then Weston. Then Wellsley. It was different and very nice. I had not been this way for quite awhile. MIGRATION.Next stop, Natick.Framingham. Sherborn. Holliston, Hopkinton, Milford, and at last Hopedale. Hopedale was land aquired from Milford and Mendon. It was started by a man named Adin Ballou. He was trying to make a Utopian society. It failed. A Mr. Draper bought the town.He built a very large foundry. He made jobs for all the surrounding towns. This town was successful because of this.It is a campus town. The next town over is Milford. They just built six econo hotels in the same location. It is centrally located as a suburb. If you stay in the Framingham, Sherborn, Natick area, the rates will be higher. The New Egland Patriots(football) are located in Foxboro. This is why Miford has a lot of hotels. All of this is located off of Route 495. My sisters class reunion just stayed in these rooms. She said they were very reasonable. If you stay in the city. The rates will be higher. The pace is faster. If someone really knows the area, it is not too bad drving in from Logan. Greene Airport in Rhode Island is easy access. As is Worcester. Milford and Marlborough both has places for speakers and banquets alike. We all probably have something for input. Organizing is probably going to be the hardest part. Maureen
Very new and I have no idea what I am doing but will give it a try. My Mother was a Whitney and I had no information about her famil y until recently. My Grandfather was born at Rochester, Vt. and I am interested in any Vermont Whitneys. This past July I made a trip to Vermont to find where he was buried and what was the cause of death. I found both so am extremely happy, a bonus was the house where they lived and probably where my Mother was born. In finding his grave site I found him buried in the I.O.O.F. section of the cemetery. Thats Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In checking out everything I came up with a list of Whitneys in Vermont who belonged to the I.O.O.F. If anyone is interested in something like that I would be happy to share the list. In making the trip to Vermont last July we flew into Boston, and this Wyoming country boy who is my husband said never again would he set foot in Boston. And its a long way from Wyoming so I don't think I would make a reunion but I think its a great idea. I am thoroughly enjoying the web site. >From cold and snowy Wyoming I am Rose Zella
I feel much interest in a Whitney reunion and would like to attend if possible. Will just have to wait and see when it is held and where and how I am at that time.. I am 84 years of old and don't attempt long automobile trips anymore as I have only one eye working, so usually fly. I did take a nostalgic railroad train trip from here (Topeka, KS.) to California last month to visit some cousins, returning via Phoenix to watch my grandson quarterback his high school football team and flew home from Phoenix. I say nostalgic since I worked for the Santa Fe Railway for 41 1/2 years and did lots of traveling back then on passenger trains. I do favor the Massachussetts area as I am a descendant of Hannah Dustin. She was my 7th Great Grandmother. They have a great story about her killing and escaping capture from the Indians back in 1597. Also, there is a life size Memorial to her in Haverhill, Mass. I have a newspaper picture, but would love to take one with my own camera for my Genealogy Picture Album for posterity, I haven't joined up with Jean Muse' My Family website yet, but have it here on my desk and will get to it as soon as possible. Regards to all. Ray Whitney, Topeka, Kansas
I found this on the Erie County NY website. Hope it helps someone. Count me in for the reunion! I can also volunteer to help out with organizational work... graphics work, web design, typing, program content, etc. etc. etc. Ty Alexander
I'm hopeful that with all of the activity on this list at present time that one of you might have information on: Lucy Whitney, b abt 19 Jul 1799, Oneida Co, NY married David Sherwood 3 Aug 1817 Dryden, Tompkins Co, NY died 21 Apr 1862 Independence, Allegany Co, NY John Sherwood, Jamestown, NY
Another alternative would be to check airline flights into Albany, NY. Southwest Airlines had advertised low rates between Baltimore, MD and Albany, NY. Albany, NY is about a 3 hr drive by car from Boston. Maybe the reunion could be held somewhere in MA half way between Boston and Albany. This would give people an alternative to flying into Logan airport in Boston. My husband and I think the reunion is a great idea and would love to attend. Marion mwalter@earhtlink.net
Hi Jeanne! Are you willing to take this on with me? I think we still have some work to do to figure out the best location, although the greater Boston area seems to be winning out at this point. Also, I think we should plan for 2002 at the earliest. How brave are you? This will be a lot of work for you and me, but it will be worth it. from, Carolyn Whitney Branagan (Mrs. Chris) "Joan C.
