    1. [WHITNEY-L] Jonesboro, ME old records question
    2. Tracy, Sandra (FIDI)
    3. Hello group, I had thought that I didn't have any Whitney records from the Jonesboro town office, but I was wrong. The ones I hand subscribed did not contain Whitney's BUT the early records I actually took a photocopy of the first 4 books of first records of Jonesboro. I was wondering if they have already been posted by someone, if not, I will send them to the list. Let me know. Sandra

The sisters you mention had a brother named Elisha FLETCHER. Weighing against this identification is the fact that neither WHITNEY wife named a son John, after the father, and only one of them named a daughter Mary, after the mother. The other FLETCHER children seem also not to have been remembered in the names of the children of the two WHITNEY families. Regards, Robert Robert L. 2. Whitney, James E, II, NLSOP
    3. I have in my records a George W. Whitney b.1839 d. June 25,1879 at Fredonia, New York. He served in the 72nd NYSV in the Civil War. He married Catharine ? Whitney(b. 1830) on April 8, 1867 at Portland, New York. Their issue was: 1.-John b. Jan.1, 1868 at Athens, Ohio 2.-William b. Jan. 6, 1870 at Hamden, Ohio 3.-Marion S.-b. May 29,1873 at Fredonia, New York 4.-George b. Dec.31, 1877 at Fredonia, New York George W. Whitney was detailed to the Bramhall's Battery of Light Art. were on July 5th, 1863 on the retreat from Gettysburg he was crushed by his horse pulling a gun caisson. On August, 1863 he was docked $18.00 for losing his Colt Revolver. His doctors upon his death testified he died of TB-lung hemorrhage. His wife applied for a pension but I believe was not successful. George was a farmer prior to service. He was a day laborer after the war and under doctors care the rest of his life. This individual and family lived on the western side of New York by Lake Erie in Cautaugua County. One of my second cousins obtained this info from the National Archives thinking it was "our" George Whitney. Will gladly send copies of file to anyone claiming linkage to this George W. Whitney. Sincerely yours, James E. Whitney, II

    3. Hello Kate, This very well could be my Ephraim, and I would be interested. The reason I am searching is that I was at the National Archives yesterday looking through some Whitney Civil War pension records. I had one for Ephraim pulled, thinking he was one of my Ephraims from Washington Co., Maine. Well. it turned out he was from Washington Co., but not in my database. The only thing I can think of is that he is a descendant of the Ephraim who married Polly Crocker in Machias. Or, maybe not. Anyway, I might be able to help someone with the info from the pension file. Or, they may be able to help me place him in the family. Anyway, the info you have may be helpful, and I would appreciate having it. These soldiers were present at Valley Forge, but only a few of them died there. In particular, reference to _Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War_, at <http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/military/mass/j.html>, reveals that James WHITNEY of Gorham continued to serve until 31 Dec 1780, so he definitely didn't die at Valley Forge. I think it is certain that James WHITNEY the soldier was the same as James WHITNEY, husband of Deborah MURCH. The only problem is determining his parentage! Regards, Robert Robert L. 3. All, With regard to the tentative identification of the James Whitney that died at Valley Forge. If true, then that blows one of the theories/hopes held in my family and reinforces the question - who is the following James who is listed in the Gorham, ME marriages at www.whitneygen.org/archives/vitals/maine/gorham.html? Whitney, James and Deborah Murch, Aug. 15, 1785.* This particular James certainly COULD have been the son of Isaac-4 and Hannah PAYNE, who were also married and had several children in Gorham, though neither Pierce nor McLellan identifies him as such. Then again, given the birthdates of Isaac and Hannah's other children, unless James was an unidentified twin (doesn't seem likely), he would more likely be the son of Isaac-4 and Sarah CROSBY. Just a thought. Linda Bastarache ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert L. 3. There are several instances of Whitneys in Illinois. I have looked at statewide records on a couple of sites (whose address escapes at the moment) and I recall them in several locations. My own interest in Whitney is in the descendants of the ever-elusive Jabez who lived in Adams County. Joseph I. Whitney lived there as did several of his sisters--Ann (Whitney) Peart and Lydia (Whitney) Castle among them. Jabez W. Whitney married in Brown County and later settled in Mercer County, Minnesota.
