Thank you. From: "Jennifer Marklein" <jemarkl@hotmail.com><< ---------------------- Dear Jennifer: There are thousands of Whitneys who haven't been connected to a "known" immigrant ancestor. You may need to get back another generation or two before you can link yours up. You don't say how long you have been searching, so forgive me if my advice is directed toward a beginner. Do you have a Church of the Latter Day Saints in your area? One of them may have a Family History Library that you should visit. Take information on your families with you when you go. They'll be able to direct you to census and vital records that can be viewed on film and microfiche. Have you written letters to the Clerks of the towns in which your grandparents were born, died or married? For a small fee you can obtain actual certified copies of those certificates which contain parents, and more leads to help you dig farther back. I've sent a copy of your query (and this reply) to the Whitney-L email list too just in case one of the 300+ members has someone you are looking for in a personal database that is not posted on the internet. I wish I could help more, but all I can do is wish you good luck! Dear WRG: I was reading some material from Rootsweb this evening and saw where the census data for the 1855 State Census of Worcester Co., MA, had been added for the Shrewsbury area. Dear WRGs...here's the obit for a Whitney..just died in Maine. <http://www.portland.com/obits/001213whitney.shtml> perhaps someone can connect with him.. cheers! Jan
Dear WRG: I have now sent invitations to 350+ people in the Whitney family - addresses obtained from this list and the WRG web site itself, as well as from own address books and messages I have received. Alot is going on there - photos, family trees, family announcements, and recipes are being shared. It's becoming alot of fun, and it's only been active since the week before Thanksgiving! People are also casting their votes about the possibility of a reunion. Someone asked earlier if they could "just visit" without joining. Now the answer is YES. Anyone who would like to take a "look see" can log in as a visitor. Go to the web site: http://www.myfamily.com In the Username box, type: Guest50 In the Password box, type: guest If you've already been sent an invitation, you should have received an additional password that will log you in as a true member. I can "re-invite" you if you've lost that password. And, of course, if you're interested at all, I can permanently delete your name from the member list. Just email me. Jeanne
FWIIW: There was a Hiram Walker Distillery in Peoria Illinois in the '30s to the 50s at least. I believe it is now out of business. I was born and raised about 25 miles East of Peoria and on a warm summer evening it was not unusual to smell the mash at home! My grandmother was a Whitney but I'm not aware of any tie in to the Hiram Walker line referenced. I'd certainly be interested if there is a connection. John

Dear WRG: In trying to bring some order out of the chaos of my electronic files of Whitney stuff in my AOL filing cabinet (which currently has 13,600 items in it), I came upon this neat question I posted in July of 1998. I don't ever remember getting a response, so I thought I would copy and paste it into a new message and try again. After all, there are well over 100 people in the WRG today who weren't around at that time. Happy Holidays *********** Dear WRG: I am continuing to try to extend many of the lines beyond Robert Ward's outstanding 6-Generation study of the descent of John-1, using the Vital Records to follow the lines down to children of the 7th and 8th generations wherever possible. In the process I come across little oddities occasionally. I just found one that I have to throw out to see if anyone has anything to contribute to what I think might be an interesting line of descent if we could follow it up. In Leominster, MA, I found a marriage for: Charlotte B. [Whitney], of Lunenburg, and Hiram Walker, Jan. 20, 1842. I seem to remember from my youth that there was a Whiskey by that name. I would be curious to know if this Hiram Walker was indeed the man for whom that beverage was named - and why! Happy Hunting:-) Allan E. Green
Jeanne - I do have a photocopy of the Fletcher portion of Chandler, as well as the other book without specified author, both of which I'll copy and mail to you Tuesday (if you send me a mailing address). Unfortunately, I don't find in either book a reference to Abigail or Martha or their husbands. This is understandable, since both books were intended to describe the history of New Ipswich, and only by way of background to provide genealogical information concerning the early-settling families of that town. In the case of the Fletcher family, for example, the Chandler work shows or attempts to give the direct ancestors of the New Ipswich Fletchers, the first of whom arrived in New Ipswich about 1754, tracing them back to their earliest-known ancestor Robert Fletcher, who was b. 1592 in England, came to America in 1630 and settled in Concord, and d. Apr 13, 1677. The material given on the Fletcher family focuses on the direct ancestry, and is not comprehensive as to the collateral ancestry, of the New Ipswich clan. Hopefully some of the material I send may be useful in tying into the material you already have and are getting from other sources. Good Luck! John
Thank you, John! Do you have copies of the Fletcher pages in Chandler? If so, does it have Abigail and Martha with their husbands? WRG: Thanks to Bev, we have a more complete picture of the Fletcher families. It certainly appears as if my guess was right on both of these Fletcher women - Abigail and Martha. I have 2 more Fletcher genealogical books coming from NEHGS to see if they are shown in them. If I find more evidence, I will report it. I am of the opinion that they were both daughters of John Fletcher and Mary Goble. Bev - are the below from Concord VRs? Here's the info I've dug up so far on this family: John Fletcher (son of Corp. Samuel and Elizabeth (Wheeler) Fletcher) b. Concord, Mass. 26 Aug 1692; d. 1749 Middlesex County, Mass.; m. circa Mary (?) (one person thinks her surname is GOBLE, but haven't found anything else about her). Children of John and Mary (?) Fletcher: 1. Martha Fletcher, b. 16 May 1716, Concord, Mass. (possibly the Martha who m. 5 Mar 1732 in Weston, Mass., Solomon Whitney, s. of Nathaniel and Mercy (Robinson) Whitney.) 2. John Fletcher, b. 31 Jan 1718, Concord, Mass. 3. Abigail Fletcher, b. 20 Jul 1720, Concord, Mass. (possibly the Abigail who m. 20 Oct 1741 in Weston, Mass., Lt. Samuel Whitney, s. of William and Martha (Peirce) Whitney.) 4. Elisha Fletcher, b. circa 1724 (total guess on date - name from Robert Ward's message) 5. David Fletcher, b. 18 Jan 1726; m. 6 Jul 1749 Jerusha Wheeler. Sources: Fletcher, Edward H., "Fletcher Genealogy" article, NEHGR Vol 22 pp 389-392 (Oct 1868); and Fletcher, Edward H., "The Descendants of Robert Fletcher of Concord, Mass." (1881, Boston) Maybe there's another Fletcher book. I'll see what NEHGS has in their lending library. Dear Holly: In my opinion, there are thousands and thousands of descendants of John and Elinor Whitney that have not been identified or connected to this pair of immigrant ancestors. We of the Whitney Research Group are constantly working to expand our knowledge of the descendants of this and other Whitney immigrant families, particularly that of Henry of Long Island and Norwalk, CT, and the Whitneys of Virginia. In addition, I have begun to try to find out where the Whitneys that were in Maryland in the 18th and 19th centuries came from. What is published on family lineage CD's or is available at Ancestry.com or on the LDS Family Search (Ancestral File) represent only a part of what is already known about this family of ours, and in many cases is notably inaccurate. Have you searched yourself on the WRG website? If not, and you would like some assistance in doing so, please write to me and I will try to guide you in doing a search efficiently. At this point, your John Lemuel Whitney could be a part of any number of different origins, and we need to try to help you find a route back from him to the point where you could connect to other known lineages. Good Luck in your search. Allan E. Green
Yes - both the Fletcher women married their husbands in Weston, according to my info.
