    2. Marjorie A. Newton
    3. I am still trying to determine the date and place of the wedding of Tabitha Whitney and Charles Markle (MAERCKEL). I have new information that the year was 1783. Tabitha was born on January 13, 1760 in Weston, Middlesex, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Abraham Whitney and Tabitha Allen Whitney. Tabitha Markle died on June 14, 1818 in Liberty, Bedford County, Virginia. Can anyone help me? Marjorie Newton newtm@pacbell.net

    2. Thank you Kate. I have looked up Nehemiah and Zachariah and most of these names but I can't remember if I ever looked up an Isaac. I will also look into SamPubCo, I may have overlooked something there. Where there's a Will there's a way, sometimes! I have the Densmore "Hartwell" book. I consider it one of the most important books in my library. I was really hoping someone from Iowa would see my plee and come to my rescue. Right now they could be subscribed to WHITNEY-L as it is too early to plant corn! Thanks to you and everybody who has tried to help me. Shirley

    3. Holly, I can't find these names/dates you list. But this is an interesting passage from an email I received from Stu Whitney back in 1998: "In the Whitney Phoenix book on The Whitney Family of Connecticut, there is a record (#394) of a John, born at Stamford in 1746, whome tradition said had a wife and three sons and was last known to have settled at Prescot in Upper Canada around 1800. 1. [WHITNEY-L] Elusive Alva L. Whitney
    2. Yes, Allan, We have found Alva in 1850 Broome Co. NY census and in Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa census 1860--1870--1880. (Alva was born about 1808-1810 Delaware Co., NY., depending on the researcher.) There was an Alva L. in the Militia Rollcall of 1834 in Stamford, NY; also in town at that time was a Nehemiah and a William W. Whitney, for whatever that is worth. There was an Alva L. as a blacksmith in Binghamton, NY, no year given, and when he married in 1830 he was a blacksmith in Harpersfield, NY. In Iowa he was a farmer and he was in Iowa by 1859 as he had a child who married that year in Cerro Gordo Co. His wife died in 1883. Another clue I tried investigating was the name Delos; Alva named a son Delos who was born in 1836 in NY. Any "clue" is worth a try! If I ever do find my fellow's heritage, I shall come a shouting "whoopee" in capital letters! Thanks for trying to help, Shirley

What was his age in that source? Allan

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Alva Lewis Whitney
    2. Thank you Allan. The first place I went to look for this Alva was to the Whitney Archives. He may not mean a thing for my genealogy but Any Alva is worth a try. The Alva, son of Joseph and Mary (Woods) Whitney, I have looked into--that Alva died young and unmarried, although he lived longer than 12 years, as he was 12 in the Revolutionary War Pension Files. My Alva was supposed to have been born in Delaware County, NY. Settled in Binghamton, Broome Co., NY and was a blacksmith; then moved to Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa by 1860. I have it that his wife died 1883, so it would be later that he could have been in Plover, Pocahontas Co., Iowa. Considering his age would be over 70 by Plovertime, doesn't mean he couldn't have taken another wife for one reason or another?!! I have found several Whitneys named Alva or Alvah and it appears both sexes use either spelling. In fact, today I found a female Alva. Well, my search continues for my Alva L. Whitney, Shirley

    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Alva Lewis Whitney
    2. Dear Shirley: I have tried to find your Alva Lewis Whitney in our databases, but would really like to know more about him, i.e., his dates, or, if you don't know them exactly, approximately what time he lived. I have found an Alvah Spaulding Whitney in the CT Whitney database, born 10 Feb 1822, place not shown but his parents were in CT. If your Alva Lewis might have been born ca 1845, then there might be a connection. You gave us a place, but not a time frame. In the Whitny14 database there is an Alvah Whitney, born ca 1803, with no other information shown. There is also an Alvah W. Whitney, born 16 Dec 1832 in Chelsea, Orange Co., VT. These are the only Alva(h)s that I find in the main databases. Since the name is somewhat uncommon, perhaps one of these is related to your Alva Lewis Whitney. Have you gone to the Whitney Research Group website and run a search for Alva, Alvah, and Lewis Whitney? That might turn up something else from the many other sources to be found there. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Green

    3. Hi Ken, You and I corresponded a few months ago, and I sent you some information on the families of John and Almira (Turner) Whitney, along with the work I had done on their ancestors in Maine. I recall you said you were going to try to get to Washington DC over the holidays to see if you could uncover Whitney Civil War records. I was wondering if you indeed had found time to do that, and if by chance you uncovered any of my people. The eligible Whitney brothers would be: John Carlton Whitney b. March 16, 1845 d. Oct 17, 1917; Charles Loring Whitney b.Sept. 15 1851 d.March 31, 1882; and Willard Roscoe Whitney b. July 12, 1855 d. Dec. 28 1925. Willard may have been a bit young. Their father was John Whitney b.June 1 1808 d. Oct. 2 1887, but he may have been a bit old for service in the Civil War. I would appreciate any information you come across. By the way what do you think of a Whitney Reunion in or near Watertown in summer 2002? Jeanne and I will be discussing the "ifs" and "whens" soon. Happy New Year! from, Carolyn Whitney Branagan
