    3. So Hiram's father was first cousin to the railroad pioneer Asa: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/biography/asa2.html And Hiram and Eliza's descendants have TWO White House connections. There is Eliza's to the Bushes through John-2: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/biography/ghwbush.html And Hiram's (and 4 WRG members) to Mrs. Fillmore through William-3's in-laws, John Perham and Lydia Shipley: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?fillmore::perham::32.html Don't laugh. While Millard rarely cracks anyone's top-thirty list of Presidents, Abigail is as good as First Ladies get. She founded the White House library-- and wouldn't we researchers like to have free run of that! 1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Long Island
    2. R. Kyser
    3. Jeanne-- Long Island is solely a geographic, never a political, entity, just like Cape Cod, the Florida Keys, the Upper Peninsula, etc. So you can solve your problem by deciding whether you'd put the geographic name in the particular space, or just the political. Long Islanders-- unlike Cape Codders and "Yoopers"-- have long confused everyone else by throwing in the "L.I." where it doesn't belong, as if it were a county, a state or medical waste. (They also "liaise" the name in the French style, so it comes out "Lawn Gisland". I'm glad I got out before the accent set!) From 1683 to 1897, there were three counties on the Island, Kings, Queens and Suffolk. Kings (coterminous with the borough of Brooklyn) and Suffolk have not changed. On Jan. 1, 1898, the old Queens split in two. The western portion remained Queens County and was absorbed with Kings into the City of New York. The eastern portion became the newly erected Nassau County. For us genealogists, it's just another case of the "new county blues". Long Island City is a neighborhood of Queens, like Astoria, Jamaica, Flushing, Forest Hills, Ridgewood, etc. There are (or were) a number of businesses there which use it as an address, so you tend to see it in ads. This county history may be why nothing is mailed to "Queens, NY 11XXX", but always to "Neighborhood, NY 11XXX" They don't do this in Brooklyn-- but that was a real city! 3. Dear WRG: In Phoenix, Vol 1 p385, we find another instance where descendants of the 2 major Whitney ancestors (Henry of L.I. & N.Y., and John of Watertown) married. Individual #1841: Eliza Ann BLACKMOND, b. in Wilton, Conn., 13 Oct. 1815; married, 5 May 1837, at Castile, N.Y., Hiram Doty COBB, a physician, son of Joshua Whitney and Susan (DOTY) COBB, and g. son of Elijah William and Sally (WHITNEY) COBB, of the Mass. Whitney family. She died of consumption 4 Nov. 1871, at Wells, Minnesota, and was buried there, leaving the reputation of "an earnest Christian, an excellent wife, and a devoted mother." He married (2d) at Wells, Mrs. Sarah Ann GOODRICH, and was living there in Jan. 1875. According to Phoenix, she was: Eliza Ann-7 Blackmond [Clarissa-6 Whitney, Ebenezer-5, David-4, Joseph-3, John-2, Henry-1] And in my John & Elinor database, I find that he was: Hiram Doty-8 Cobb [Joseph Whitney-7 Cobb, Sarah-6 Whitney, Asa-5, Joshua-4, William-3, Joshua-2, John-1] Their children and grandchildren can be found in Phoenix Vol 2, p1004-5 and Vol 3, p1907, respectively. 3. Thanks for the clarification, A.W. YES, I'd love to have your Henry Whitney families. I've been working many long hours with Phoenix's 3 Volumes. It will take me ~years~ to get everything entered. So, I'll take all the help I can get. I'm humbled by the amount of labor Phoenix put into his books, and for a man who was so young. His work is truly admirable and astonishing. I know from what I've read in his biography that he had some wealth and I would assume he acquired a staff of workers to assist him. He corresponded with thousands of families and received responses from them. Many, many of Henry's desc. moved to Ohio and then sometimes on to Michigan. Jeanne ----- Original Message ----- From: Slackwit@aol.com To: jwmuse@compuserve.com Sent: Saturday, February 10, 2001 6:56 PM Subject: Re: [WHITNEY-L] Long Island As one who lives on Long Island Sound, I believe it would be appropriate to list it as L. I., ie; Flushing, Queens, L. I., NY, or for earlier entries:Jamaica Bay, Long Island, NY, or even Sheepshead, LI, NY. The counties have changed on Long Island, but everyone knows where Long Island is. Long Island City is not very big, and when people think of Long Island, they don't think of that town, they think of the entire island, which is like a county that way. When you ask someone where they are from, or where a town is, no one says, "Riverhead, in Suffolk County". They say "Riverhead, on Long Island", or Stoney Brook, out on Long Island, as opposed to, Stoney Brook, in Nassau County. Hope this meets with agreement, A. W. Brown By the way, if you are working on the Henry Database, I have some entries from my research into Michigan Families in 1850 that might be appropriate. I have sent some of the John desc. to Jon Aston, and if you'd like I can send some Henry kin to you. Surprising to me that more of the Whitney Families in MI in 1850 are Henry descendants than John's, but that seems to be the case.

    3. This is one for our New York residents because this southern gal can't get it straight. Long Island is a city and the name of the 'arm' that stretches out from the 'mainland' New York. Am I right so far? How should I enter a place that Phoenix calls, for instance, Flushing, L. I. ? (There are many more towns he lists this way; Flushing is just one example.) Flushing is in Queens County, New York -- correct? So -- where should one enter Long Island? Or, was Long Island a county in the late 1800s? I could put it in the 'memo' section - but it would print out - Flushing, Queens Co., New York, Long Island. If I put it in the 'detail' section, it will print - Long Island, Flushing, Queens Co., New York. Long Island is not a separate state, but I guess I could enter the state name as Long Island, New York. It would then print out - Flushing, Queens Co., Long Island, New York. None of them seem right. Any suggestions? Jeanne

    3. Dear WRG: I am particularly interested in any Whitneys from Westminster, Mass., since this is where my ancestor, Benjamin, was born. Of Elisha Whitney, b. 2 July 1757, Heywood in his "History of Westminster, Massachusetts, 1728-1893", p919, states "His name disappears from the records ab. 1800, and it is thought that he rem. to Winch[endon]. Nothing further known." I looked in the Winchendon, Mass. VRs, but neither his death nor his wife's death appear there. It is possible that Elisha and Eunice moved their entire family to Vermont and that we may find their deaths recorded in or around Andover. 1. [WHITNEY-L] Whitneys of Vermont, to Ohio, Michigan, Illinois 1790+
    2. Dear Robert Ward, Early last year, you posted an erudite message postulating the ancestry of three Whitneys of Vermont; Nathan, Eleazer, and Jonathan. From my investigations pursuant to my Whitney Families of Michigan in 1850 project (ongoing, an earlier version was posted, but the link is broken) I would like to add to the information, and postulate for them some descendants, while providing some ties for the above mentioned Nathan to Vermont, which you mentioned were lacking. The 1820 Census Index lists in Lyme, Huron County Ohio; Nathan, Nathan Jr., and Eli Whitney, all on the same page. This is Nathan, the Rev. Soldier you mentioned. The 1830 Census Index lists in Thompson, Seneca County, Nathan Jr., Eli, Jasper, Willard, William, p. 140 and 141. The Underhill Genealogy identifies this Willard Whitney as the husband of Mary Underhill, daughter of James and Love (Sykes) Underhill and gives a lengthy and detailed account of their migrations, with her brothers, David, James, Jasper, and Cyrus, from Dorset, and Halifax, Vermont, then to Norwalk, (Lyme) Huron County, OH, and then to Thompson, in Seneca County, OH, and finally to Algansee, Lester, and Muskegon, in Michigan and eventually to Minnesota. In 1830, in Thompson, Seneca, OH, we have David, James, and Jasper Underhill, p. 141. An older brother is still in Norwalk. Also we have on p. 141 James and John Whitmore, but more of them later. Nearly the whole page is taken up with these three families; Whitney, Whitmore, and Underhill. This confirms the account of the Underhill family's travels in the Underhill Genealogy. It only mentions Willard Whitney as an aside, the husb. of Mary, but obviously there was a large contingent of Whitneys traveling with this family from Vermont, to wit, Nathan, the old man; and Eli, Nathan Jr, William, and Willard, of an age to be brothers, and Jasper, a bit younger. What is known of Eli, Nathan Jr., Willard, William and Jasper Whitney, who I postulate were sons or nephews of Nathan, Sr.? 1. Willard Whitney, b. Dorset, VT, 1781, married, 1822, in Seneca, OH, Mary Underhill, b. 1803, VT. He died in Alpine, Kent, MI, October 3, 1867, age 86y8m, death record gives POB as Vermont, nothing more. He resided in 1820 in Lyme, Huron, OH, 1830 Thompson, Seneca OH, and in 1850 in Kent, Alpine, MI. I have not found him in 1840. An closer examination of the census records of his kin might show him. His wife was living in 1888 in Casenovia, Muskegon, MI. They had no children. The IGI gives an incorrect birthdate (1789) with his marriage, as does the Underhill Gen. (1793) and also makes mention of a Willard Whitney b. Halifax, VT, son of Nathan and Eunice, b. 1793. Could be the same. He was a bit older than his wife and may have shaved a few years off at his marriage. (Census Records, MI GENDIS, Underhill Gen. IGI) 2. William Whitney, b. abt. 1790, VT, m. Jennie Whitmore, b. about 1792, dau. of Benjamin Whitmore and Martha, of Bratus, NY. She died 22 March, 1874, Casenovia, Muskegon, MI. age 81y1m8d. He died 1882, presumably in Muskegon, so there should be death record. MI death records aft. 1867 are supposed to list parents. He resided in 1820 Lyme, Huron, OH; 1830 Thompson, Seneca, OH; 1850 in Sparta, Kent, MI, with wife, son Benjamin, Orrin, and a relative, Hamilton C. Whitney, who I have not been able to place, but is promising because there is an older Hamilton C. Whitney in earlier censuses, or censi, if the term is proper, and this might add information on the family. They then moved on to Casenovia, Muskegon, MI, with the rest of the clan. They had children: a. Nathan, was born in Huron County, OH, Nov. 11, 1821, settled in Dupage Co, Illinois, in 1844, in Kent Co., MI, in 1850, in Casenovia, Muskegon, MI, in 1854. He m. (1) Matilda Chambers, b. Tompkins Co., NY, Feb 1824, d. March 26, 1858;  m.(2)Lovicy Henry, b. Monroe Co., NY, Sep 23, 1820. b. Eunice A., also b. Nov 11, 1821, Seneca, OH, m. Erastus Cook. She died 1902, in Casenovia. c. Benjamin, b. 1823, d. 1901, m. Rachel Blauvelt, who d. 1877, age 44 years, in Casenovia, Muskegon, MI. A descendant, Jill Leach, states he also lived in Rives, Jackson, MI. d. Orrin, b. 1825, m. Mary E. Cook, dau. of Augustus Cook, and sister of Erastus Cook, above. He also dwelt in Casenovia eventually. (MI GENDIS, Jill Leach of Muskegon, MI, IGI, Census Records, Hist. of Muskegon Co. MI) 3. Eli Whitney, b. Dec. 24 1793, VT; m. Nancy Whitmore, b. abt. 1796, NY. (Nancy may be a sister of Jennie Whitmore, wife of William, because the father of Jennie, Benjamin Whitmore, b. 1766, and wife Martha, appear right next door to Eli and Nancy in Lake Co, Ill, in 1850, at age 89. He also had a son James, who is probably the James Whitmore in Seneca County next to Nathan Jr, Eli, Wm. and Jasper Whitney in 1830. James was b. 1794 and is also present with Benjamin in Lake Co. 1850.) An earlier post by (can't remember who) details Eli Whitney's children from probate record filed by his grand nephew, Charles. I won't go into them here there are a dozen or so. Eli d. in 1855 in Lake Co, IL. He had a number of land transactions with a son, Willard, in Kent County in the 1850's, and that Willard also lived in Sparta. (WRG post, IGI, Census Records, Gravestone of Eli, Kent County Land Records) 3. Nathan Jr., was born in VT, lived in 1820 in Huron, OH, in 1830 in Seneca, and after that I know not, but he may be the Nathan Whiting in Branch County in 1840, and the Nathan in Calhoun County, Emmet, MI, in 1850. I have not reached his county yet in my researches, but I believe he made it to Michigan. 4.. Jasper Whitney, b. abt. 1803, m. Elizabeth Gunwar, and lived in Seneca County. Perhaps named after Jasper Underhill. I know there are descendants of these gentlemen on this list, and a great many interested persons would be gratified if these Vermont Whitney families could be tied together. Perhaps some insight into the three Vermont Whitneys, Nathan, Jonathan, and Eleazer, as well as Asa, can be gained by investigating these above, who I postulate, for the present, are sons or nephews of Nathan Whitney, of Vermont. There were only three Nathan WHITNEY men in New England old enough to have contracted this marriage, as far as I can determine, and none seems possible: 1. Nathan-4 WHITNEY (Thomas-3, Thomas-2, John-1), b. ca. 1689, m. 18 Nov 1719, Lancaster, Mary HOLMAN, who survived him. 2. Nathan-4 WHITNEY (Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1), b. 10 Jan 1706/7, York, ME, m. 12 Nov 1730, York, Lydia YOUNG. He seems too young. 3. Nathan-3 WHITNEY (John-2, Henry-1), b. ca. 1695, Norwalk, CT, m. ca. 1715, Sarah PLATT. They had children born at regular intervals which all seem to be by Sarah PLATT. On the other hand, Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY (John-2, John-1), b. 1 Feb 1646/7, Watertown, MA, had a first wife Sarah HAGAR, who d. 29 Jul 1722, Weston, MA. He also had a second wife Sarah -----, who d. 7 May 1746, aged 88 years, Weston. She is unidentified. I believe the above marriage record applies to this last couple. I searched for a Sarah GOBLE, likely a widow, born about 1658. A likely candidate was Sarah (SHEPHERD) GOBLE, widow of Thomas-3 GOBLE, who d. 16 Mar 1723/4, Concord, MA. His birth seems not to be recorded, but his parents were married in Apr 1657. They were married 4 Jan 1686, Concord, MA. Now there were lots of Sarah SHEPHERD individuals, and I haven't the resources at hand tonight to identify her. She could not be the daughter of Abraham SHEPHERD, as asserted by the IGI, since that girl was b. 10 Sep 1674, and hence under 12 at the date of the marriage of Thomas GOBLE to Sarah SHEPHERD. Given her calculated age at the time of her marriage, she could have been a widow of a SHEPHERD man and have borne a different maiden surname. Anyone out there with GOBLE or SHEPHERD resources who could assist in this identification? Regards, Robert Robert L. Ward WHITNEY Research Group <http://www.whitneygen.org/home2.html>
