    1. [WHITNEY-L] Re: The line of John Whitney - Elwood

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "wwkr" <wwkr@hitter.net> To: <jwmuse@compuserve.com> Sent: Sunday, February 25, 2001 11:39 PM Subject: The line of John Whitney Hi. I e-mailed you several months ago. I know it was sometime ago. I was inquiring about information of a Frederick Whitney and his father Elwood Whitney. You said there was not any information you could give me. I have found information that Elwood is a descendant of John Whitney. The actual lineage would read Frederick, Elwood, Mordecai, Thomas, Phineas, Samuel, William, Nathaniel, John, John. My grandfather was Frederick Whitney. I do not have much information about his father as well as his aunts and uncles. I was wondering if you know of any one who may have more information on this lineage. I have been to the Whitneygen.org site. Elwood is listed. His wife's name is spelled incorrectly, but this is the Elwood I have been looking for. I have found all sorts of information dating from John to Thomas, but after that my information is very scarce. My grandfather died when I was eight. He passed away in 1982. His father (Elwood) passed away when he was a child. I am still searching for information on his father. Searching cemeteries for a place of burial as well as a death date. I know he died sometime around 1920 in Muncie, Indiana. I am getting closer. My grandfather (Frederick) would have had four uncles (Sherman, Sheridan, Grant, Harrison,) and an aunt (Mary). I have little information on them. If you know of any one who could help me I would so much appreciate it. Thank you. Kimberly ------------------------ Dear Kimberly: I'll forward your message to the Whitney Research Group. Maybe someone there will reply. You might consider subscribing to the list too. The instructions are on the web site. Good luck! Jeanne (Whitney) Muse jwmuse@compuserve.com

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Bezaleel Whitney - son of Charles and Lucy (Shays) Whitney
    2. Jeanne Muse
    3. Dear WRG: Kathy Behling <kbehling@uswest.net> wrote me today: Yes, Bezaleel's parents were Charles Whitney and Lucy Shays. Lucy was the daughter of Daniel Shays of Shay's rebellion fame. But that's as far back as I'm sure of. The father of Charles may have been Aaron Whitney. Does that help? I searched our WRG web site and found the following link: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/nehgr/140.html - The Daniel Shays Family - states that Bezaleel Whitney was "of New Salem", Mass. when he married Lucy Shays, daughter of Daniel. A possible candidate as Bezaleel's father, a Charles Whitney, son of Aaron, I looked in my own database and found one candidate: Charles Whitney, b. 14 May 1742 Littleton, Mass. - son of Rev. Aaron Whitney and Alice Baker On the above Charles, Pierce (p. 80) says briefly "res. Phillipston, Mass. but d. in Vt." See the transcription: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/pierce/p076-080.htm#C937 Since Pierce states that Charles was mentioned in his father's will dated July 15, 1779 and settled Nov. 12, 1779, we know Charles died after 1779. Notice also on the above Pierce transcription page, that this Charles' sister, Lucy Whitney, married Samuel Kendall "of New Salem". If we use just this small bit of information, we could make a guess on the following ancestral line: Aaron-5 Whitney (Moses-4, Moses-3, Richard-2, John-1) & Alice Baker -- Charles-6 Whitney and ? --- Bezaleel-7 and Lucy Shays (dau. of Daniel Shays) ---- Lucy-8 Whitney and Jonathan Jenks ----- Charles W. Jenks and Olive Hilton More information is definitely needed to determine if the above conjecture is true. 1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Joseph Whitney/Ephraim Whitney of Tuscarawas Co., OH
    2. Dear Virginia: According to our collective database, there was an Ephraim Whitney, Jr., born 7 Sep 1807, in Newburg, ME. Interestingly, he is the son of an Ephraim Whitney, b. ca 1780, who is shown as having died after 1850 in Tuscawarus Co., OH (unless whoever submitted that got him mixed up with his son that you found in the 1850 census) There is no marriage for Junior in the db, and the info was skimpy to say the least. You might, however, have some luck if you focus your looking toward Newburg, ME. Sincerely, Allan E. Green

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Joseph Whitney/Ephraim Whitney of Tuscarawas Co., OH
    2. Dear Whitney Researchers: My ancestor Joseph WHITNEY was born 8 Sept 1829 in Ohio but I have not established who his parents were. In the 1850 Ohio Census, Tuscarawas Co., there is a Joseph WHITNEY, age 20, living with the family of Ephraim WHITNEY, age 43, born in Maine. I believe this to be (my) Joseph WHITNEY and that he could be the son of Ephraim WHITNEY, a descendent of John & Elinor WHITNEY. I need to confirm this connection. On 11 Sept 1853, Joseph WHITNEY married Catherine FREASE in Tuscarawas Co., OH. Catherine was born 18 Nov 1832 in Somerset Co., PA. Catherine and Joseph WHITNEY then moved to Bureau Co., IL where they had six children. Eventually, they moved to Pottawattamie Co., IA. where they lived out their lives. Their children: Mary WHITNEY b. 1854, Idella WHITNEY b. 1857, Alice WHITNEY b. 1859, Rebecca WHITNEY b. 1861, William H. WHITNEY b. 1865 Charles W. WHITNEY b. 1868. If anyone has information and/or suggestions to help verify the connection, please let me know. Thank you so much for your help. Virginia Payne paynevj@aol.com

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Abigail Fletcher Whitney
    2. Bob & Sandy
    3. I'm still trying to nail down the parents of Abigail Fletcher, wife of Samuel Whitney (William, Nathaniel, John, John). One of our Whitney members was kind enough to give me a lot of data that she had collected. As I was going through the vital records for Concord, Middlesex Co., MA, I found an Abigail Fletcher of Concord who married Jonathon Bradstreet of Lunenburg on 15 Oct 1751 by Rev. Daniel Bliss. I don't know if this Abigail is the same one who is the daughter of John and Mary (Goble) Fletcher, born 2 July 1720 in Concord. If these 2 Abigails are the same person, she obviously is not the one who married Samuel Whitney in 1741 in Westminster, MA. If this is true, then the John and Mary (Goble) Fletcher line is not for Abigail Fletcher Whitney. I have not yet checked for a will of John Fletcher, which might mention his married daughter Abigail. Is that too much to hope for? Sandy (Whitney) Fahrnbruch

She was the daughter of Thomas and Alice Gobel), was born about 1667 at Concord, Mass. and died after 1727. She married(1) on January 4, 1686/87 to Thomas Goble III, her first cousin. He was the son of Thomas Goble Jr. and Mary (mousell) Goble and died (bef. April 20) 1724. Sarah Shepard married(2) a Mr. Whitney. Sarah and her first husband had three children: 1. Sarah, m. William Wood 2. Mary, m. Mr. Fletcher 3. Abigail, m. Joseph Harris Ref: T. B. Wyman, "Charlestown Genealogies and Estates" Charles L. Newell, "Record of My Ancestry" (1899)" I wrote back: "In case you care, the marriage record of "Sarah GOBLE and Nathan WHITNEY" has been located. They were married 2 Nov 1724, Concord, MA, by Rev. John WHITING. This is not recorded in Concord vital records. Reference: Clarence S. Brigham, "Concord (Mass.) Marriages, 1724," _The American Genealogist_, Vol. 16, p. 23. "Being well-versed in the WHITNEY families of New England, I can attest that there was no "Nathan" WHITNEY old enough to have been her husband, and even ones much younger have been otherwise disposed of. "Instead, this has to have been Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY, son of John-2 and Ruth (REYNOLDS) WHITNEY [John-1], b. 1 Feb 1646/7, Watertown, MA. He m.(1) 12 Mar 1673/4, Watertown, MA, Sarah HAGAR. She d. 29 Jul 1722, Weston, MA. He remarried Sarah -----, who must have been the above Sarah (SHEPARD) GOBLE. He died 7 Jan 1732/3, Weston, and his widow Sarah d. 7 May 1746, aged 88 years, Weston. This implies that Sarah SHEPARD was born in 1657-1658, not 1667 as given above, if her age at death is accurate. That also makes her probably the oldest child of John-2 and Sarah (GOBLE) SHEPARD. All of Nathaniel's children were by his first wife, which is not surprising, since his second wife was about 66 years old at their marriage. "The above events are taken from the published vital records of the towns indicated, together with various compiled genealogies and other secondary sources. The probate of Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY mentions his widow Sarah, with no indication of her former marriage or other relatives. "I descend from Nathaniel-3 and Sarah (HAGAR) WHITNEY, so have no descendancy from the SHEPARD or GOBLE families, but am interested because we have now identified my ancestor's second wife! "Thanks for your assistance!" I feel very confident that we have solved this mystery. Regards, Robert Robert L. Ward WHITNEY Research Group <http://www.whitneygen.org/home2.html>

    3. WRGs, I am a descendant of Abraham (re: the Thistle home), though of the Henry Whitney Conneticut line. Would it be possible to include/add a "MA" or "CT" to distinguish between the two lines? Also, I would appreciate learning if there is a list of WRGs of the CT Whitney line. Thanks, Rene Lewis Lawrie
