    1. [WHITNEY-L] Re: WHITNEY-D Digest V01 #43
    2. Dear GramyG@aol.com I saw your question about Moses Whitney. I have run across this family in some of my research in Westminster, Vermont. I have not found a connection yet but noticed that you listed a Calvin Powers. I have some Powers in my line from Westminster, and Putney marrying into the Whitney line. 1. Adolphus Whitney- was born on 11 Aug 1786 in Westminster, Windham County, Vermont, was christened in Windham and died on 14 Dec 1869 in Hartland, Windsor County, Vermont. Died of double pneumonia Adolphus married Martha Powers- daughter of Jonas Powers-and Lydia Tower-, on 31 Aug 1808 in Putney, Vermont They had the following children: + 2 M i. Hiram Whitney-[117] was born on 28 May 1810 in Sherburne, Rutland, Vermont and died on 21 Nov 1889 + 3 M ii. Alfred Whitney-[12] (3) was born about 1812 4 U iii. Sylvester Whitney-[258] was born about 1815. He lived with Alfred per 1850 census. This is only assumption that they are all related. + 5 M iv. Edward Whitney-[109] (4) was born in Apr 1825 in Hartland, Vermont (5) 6 M v. Leineos H. Whitney-[153] was born about 1828-1829. Infor from NEGHS Vt Vr's 1850 Census #61870 I am interested in the "History of the Powers Family" by Nathaniel Powers. Is a copy available? Diana Frazer glwq21a@aol.com

ISBN 0-9650942-0-0. "Ducktrap" was the name of one of the villages that merged to become incorporated as Lincolnville. Samuel was a prominent citizen and businessman. Cheers! Jan

    3. Jan, You should contact your cousin Kathy Behling <kbehling@uswest.net>. She descends from this same Bezaleel-7 WHITNEY (Charles-6, Aaron-5, Moses-4, Moses-3, Richard-2, John-1). I recommend you visit the Whitney Research Group website at <http://www.whitneygen.org/home2.html>. There you'll find quite a bit of information on these people, especially from Bezaleel backwards. Thanks for the descendant information, which we will gladly add to our files! 1. [WHITNEY-L] Mercy HEALD, m. 1730/1, Elijah-4 WHITNEY
    2. Robert L. Ward
    3. Dear WRG, I posted a note on the subject of the birth and parentage of Mercy HEALD, wife of Elijah-4 WHITNEY (Isaiah-3, Thomas-2, John-1), on the HEALD GenForum website: "Can anyone identify Mercy HEALD who married Elijah WHITNEY on 11 Mar 1730/1, Lancaster, MA? They son Elias, b. 26 Dec 1731, Lancaster, and she died before 30 Oct 1736. Was she the widow of Joseph HEALD of Stow, MA?" I got a very nice response from Rebecca Hamel: "Clarence Almon Torrey compiled a manuscript in 1940 entitled, "THE HEALD-HALE GENEALOGY JOHN HEALD OF CONCORD MA AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS (SIX GENERATIONS)". The manuscript is located at the NEHG Society in Boston. He has two pages in his manuscript devoted to the Joseph Heald you mention. It says that Joseph Heald was born in Stow, MA about 1689, and died there March 22, 1724 (1723/24). He married about 1713 Mercy Brown, daughter of Boaz and Abial Brown of Stow. She (Mercy) married second, int recorded 12/3/1727, Nathaniel Hapgood of Lancaster, Ma. He (Nathaniel) died Aug. 26, 1758 in his 62nd year, at Bolton (MA). She (Mercy) died there Oct. 1, 1774, in her 79th year. It lists 4 children all born in Stow, Ma. 1. MARY, b. 6/22/1714, m. 3/11/1730/31 Dr./Lieut. Elijah Whitney, son of Isaiah and Sarah Woodward Whitney, b. 8/2/1707, at Lexington, MA. She died and he married 12/8/1736 at Lexington, Rebecca Winship. He died 2/19/1755, at Harvard, MA. His widow married second 1/25/1764, at Harvard, MA, Deacon Joshua Whitney of Stow, MA. Rebecca died there 12/8/1769. Joshua died March 15, 1787 at Boxborough, MA. 2. ELIZABETH, b. 4/26/1717, m. March 23, 1736, Thomas Wetherbee, of Stow, son of John and Catherine (Whitcomb)Wetherbee, b. 6/10/1715 at Stow. She was living in Stow in 1776. He sold land May 5, 1783, acknowledged the same day. 3. LYDIA, b. 5/23/1719, m. about 1734 Peter Graves of Stow, son of Deacon Ebenezer and Elizabeth Haynes Graves. He was living Feb. 2,1760, when he acknowledged signing a deed, died before May 14, 1760, when Lydia and her children were warned out of Bolton, MA. She remained in Bolton and married there 4/5/1762 as his second wife, Daniel Priest of Leominster, MA. He died 7/29/1771. She died 1/29/1807, in Leominster. 4. MERCY, 3/6/1722/23, died at Leominster, MA.,3/10/1796, aged 72 years 11 months, and 22 days (gravestone); married about 1741 Reuban Gates, son of Daniel and Anna Gates, b./ 12/12/1716, at Stow; died at Leominster 12/15/1787, aged 70 years 11 months and 28 days (gravestone)(If birth and death dates are correct his age as stated is slightly inaccurate) [that note is from CA Torrey] JOSEPH HEALD, is listed on pg 249 of the Stow Vital Records book, as dying 3/22/1724. Under marriages on pg 162 it lists Mar[y] and Nathaniel Hapgood of Lancaster, int. 12/3/1727." The marriage record says precisely, "Elijah Whitney & Mercy Heald of Lancaster was married by Joseph Wilder Esqr. March 11: 1730-1". Apparently it should have read "Mary" instead of "Mercy". 2. Hi, I've been searching for some time for the names of the parents and descendants of Gratia Frances WHITNEY who m. Edward Cutter LOCKE. I have found some of the descendants, and now have the name of one of her parents: Simon WHITNEY, of Springfield, Vermont (d. abt 1845). Does anyone know the name of her mother? To which WHITNEY line does she belong? Gracia's probate record for guardianship in Worcester: "Franklin McIntire of Fitchburg represents that Gracia Whitney is a minor under age of 14 residing in Fitchburg and daughter of Simon Whitney, late of Springfield, Vermont.  Date is 22 Oct 1845." 2. Dear Kate and WRG: Oops! Forgive my tired brain. I included the remark (the second one) about Mary Whitney, christened and died in 1600. I was confusing this Mary with the two daughters of John and Elinor with that name that both died in England and did not come with the family to America. Common sense would suggest that John probably named his first and later daughters for his younger sister that died so young. Sorry for the mixup. Allan E. Green

I don't think there is much of any chance of that. Robert Whitney, John-1's younger brother, for whom he was the sponsor when Robert served his apprenticeship with the Merchant Taylor's Company, was christened at St. Margaret's Westminster on 10 Nov 1605 (which would make him 30 in 1635), and died and was buried from St. Peter's Cornhill in London 3 Apr 1662. Mary (the second one) was christened 2 Aug 1600 at St. Margaret's Westminster, and was buried there six days later. Allan E. Green
