    3. Dear WRG, Living about 1 mile from there, I can attest to the widening of Beacon Street to 2 lanes either direction and middle-of-the-road train rails. In many parts, the space between the rails and the left lane of traffic is set up for diagonal parking. Hence, Whitney's idea to enhance shopping came to be, with Coolidge Corner one of the primary shopping areas. It is interesting to hear that Whitney hired Olmstead as the designer. Olmstead designed many park areas in the Boston area and they are all beautiful areas. If any "beautification" was ever done in the center of Beacon street, it has long since dissappeared!! Perhaps the flowers found themselves competing with the rise of the automobile for space. If so, the automobile won! Lyn Legere Richard Saunders wrote: > On April 28, 2001 Ask the Globe, Boston. > Q. 3. Jeanne et al: I just checked my CD of the Worcester County VR. Only one reference to Williard Broad in the whole county: Willard b to Jpseph and Sybel May 31, 1796. I found no births to a Willard, nor marriages, no deaths. Found a marriage of Alpheus Harding to Catherine M Wheeler of Rutland Mar 9 1837, listed in the Barre VR. Do our members know about the CDs that have images of the Mass. VR? These are scans of the printed books. Cost about $30 per county. They are searchable to the extent that the index is searchable and there are hot links to the actual pages. I got the ones I own from NEHGS. 3. On April 28, 2001 Ask the Globe, Boston. Q. How long has Beacon Street been divided by street car tracks? A. According to Steve Jerome, curator of the Brookline Historical Society, Beacon Street was originally laid out in the 1850s as a country road for horse-drawn sleds and carriages. However, in the 1880s, Coolidge Corner businessman HENRY WHITNEY, who was also president of Boston's West End Railway Co. envisioned a wider Beacon Street divided by a street car line to attract shoppers. Accordingly, WHITNEY hired the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design a broader and beautified Beacon Street. On Jan. 1, 1889, the first electric trolley made its trip.

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Deacon Samuel Whitney (Sr.) of Brunswick, Maine.
    2. Larry Tracy
    3. Dear WRG Members, As some of you know, we have been working on the identification of the Whitneys who settled in Maugerville,N.S./N.B. along the St. John's River. Deacon Samuel Whitney (Sr.) appears as a grantee in 1761 as part of a contingent of Pre-Loyalists, having mostly military ties. The evidence is very weighty, favoring the relocation of both Samuel Whitney Sr. and Samuel Whitney Jr. to Maugerville from Brunswick, Maine. It appears that Whitney Sr. remains in Maugerville with wife Lydia. Church records show both are living in 1789, his age being 82. Samuel Whitney Jr. seems to appear on a deed in 1796 with wife Mary at Grand Lake just below Maugerville along the River. The question has ben why did a Maine family remove to the St. John's, when the preponderance of early settlers were from the Rowley, Mass area. Recently while checking names, I discovered 3 Nevers brothers in the Brunswick area who were also early grantees, one being Dr.Phinneas Nevers. Dr Nevers had ties to Bos! ton where his father purportedly had a boarding house. In an attempt to connect the dots, it was discovered that Dr. Nevers and Deacon Samuel Whitney were in the same military readiness group in Brunswick in 1757. Also, the English addvertised in the Boston papers for settlers to the Maugerville area. It should also be mentioned that Dr. Nevers 2 brothers removed to N.B. at the same time. I would like to throw out this question to the WRG: Does anyone have more information on Dr. Phinneas Nevers? Perhaps a marriage in Mass. (wife is unknown). Perhaps a son-in-law to Whitney? It seems Nevers may have been the catalyst that brought the Whitneys to N.B. The second item is of clarification surrounding the abduction of Deacon Samuel Whitney in 1751. He, with 6 others were captured by the Indians and brought to Canada for ransom. He was released, only to submit a Memorial (Petition) to the General Court in Mass. for relief for his family and son, Samuel Whitney Jr. who still remained in captivity. Many versions of this Memorial exist both in print and on the internet. Some mention Deacon Samuel Whitney as having 5, 6 or 8 children; some even relate no children mentioned! This week I received a copy of the original Memorial of Samuel Whitney from Volume 74, Page 46 & 47. It reads "...Your Memorialists son yet remains in captivity among the Indians with three more taken at the same time and he has a wife with eight children...". This leaves little doubt that Samuel Whitney had at least 3 more children over the 5 shown on the Brunswick, Maine records. It is unclear, and a matter of interpretation, as to whether "eight" i! ncludes his still captive son Samuel Whitney Jr. Conceivably, Whitney may have 4 children over the 5 listed in the Brunswick Vitals as it seems to indicate. This document opens the way for the possible connection to Samuel Whitney of the yet unidentified 4 Whitney men in the Maugerville area, These being Ebenezer, Josiah, John and Jeremiah. The ages of these men seem to fall within the time frame after the last recorded birth in 1742. This document was dated January 21, 1752, with notation of January 20, and30, 1752 written elsewhere. I hope this helps those that may be working on this project. We welcome any assistance or ideas in solving this much attempted riddle. Regards, Larry Tracy Jr. Kennebunkport, Maine Nancy Metelski Saco, Maine

    1. [WHITNEY-L] GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE
    2. Mert Marley
    3. From: KYMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE: There's been a change in Grandma; we've noticed her of late, She's always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family; we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby; she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered; she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy -- for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit; the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Granddad's shirt, the flowerbed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the court house and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty; they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worth while avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea, Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one (Alas!) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby; to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, and they wept, and now lay forever still, But they will not, be forgotten as long, as Grandma climbs the family tree. There is another son of Joshua's that was born abt 1836 in NYC, NY (civil war enlistment papers) named Charles Wesley Whitney. Charles d: 16 Apr 1865 Murfreesboro, TN. We have been unable to locate Charles' mother. Charles is my Great great grandfather--he had 4 children. There is a bastardy suit in Spencer Co, IN in 1841 that indicates there is another child of Joshua's born in Spencer Co, IN to Elizabeth Baldwin in 1839-40. We are not absolutely certain that child ISN'T Charles Wesley but the Civil War enlistment papers indicate that it isn't. Family letters indicate there was a brother of Charles that left "the area" and went to Louisiana. No name was given & have found no indication that he was in Southern Indiana. Believe Joshua to be the brother of Joseph L. & Henry S. Whitney....court records have them as securities for each other often. Joshua B. also sold land to Charles Wesley in Warrick Co, IN. The name Bradford is used in each family, also. Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your consideration. Carol Mudd Fuchs

There is apparently more than one Whitney-Payne connection: William Collins Whitney and his wife Flora Payne Whitney were part of the gilded age "400" of New York 'high' society. Whitney was Secretary of the Navy under Grover Cleveland (and father-in-law to Gertrude Vanderbilt). According to the Swansburg (or "Swansberg?") biography of Whitney and his daughter, Dorothy Whitney Straight ("Whitney Father, Whitney Heiress" -- published in the middle/late 1970s, Scribner & Sons I think), his line goes to Nathaniel-2, John-1 & Elinor. Flora Payne was the daughter of a political figure, I believe from Ohio. Whitney's father was Joseph Scolly (or Scully) Whitney, but I have no idea what the links between Joseph and Nathaniel were. Hope this helps someone avoid confusion (or at least doesn't heap on any additional confusion) :) Merry

    2. I am really excited over this discovery as My grand father Mentle whitney named my dad Berniece but it was supposed to be Burnice and I do know that there was a Whitney Payne connection in the family but I did not know how. I know that Mentle was born in NY state also but do not know where. He was born in 1864. I feel like there is finally a crack in the wall. LoisBauman@cs.com

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Parents of Burnice Lawrence Whitney
    2. Micheal & Becky Myers
    3. I learned over the weekend the parents names of Burnice Whitney, only it becomes more of a problem. His father's name was John Whitney, married to Emma Payne. Burnice was born August 18, 1866 in Bufflao, NY. I do not have a birthdate nor place for John Whitney and there are SO many John Whitney's out there. Does this John Whitney married to Emma Payne sound familiar to anyone? Becky Myers
