Dear Mark: Thank you for the kind offer. It was very thoughtful of you to write to me about your discovery! I am not a direct descendant of Henry Austin Whitney and Fanny Lawrence, but I'm sure I can locate someone who might be interested in what could be a family treasure. I'll send a copy of this message to the Whitney Research Group, where one of his relatives might see it. You should receive at least one response. If not, write to me again and I'll make more inquiries. Jeanne (Whitney) Muse ----- On May 2, 2001, Mark Peasley <beverly@werple.net.au> wrote: Dear Jean, Found your name in a search of the internet for Fanny Lawrence. If I have read your family tree correctly she was the wife of Henry Austin Whitley who died 21 Jan 1889. In any case the reason for contacting you is that we live in Australia and have come across a book of collected poems which have been handwritten in ink into a small book by Fanny Lawrence (dated 1863) in Groton Mass. The book also includes loose newspaper cuttings of poems and what appears to be an attractive recipe written on a seperate sheet of paper for Molasses Gingerbread. Thought I might contact you to see if anyone in your genealogical tree would be interested in a copy of the book and I would be happy to photocopy and send to you. Regards, Mark Peasley

Regarding the pensioner Ann E. Whitney in Washington Co., Ohio. My finger slipped. She is listed as #349, not 3349.
Phoenix does not carry the following information concerning this man and I offer it to the group for those that wish to add it to their data base. The brackets are mine. "Cemetery Records of Knox County, Ohio. Vol. 2" by The Knox County Genealogical Society, Richard DeLauder editor. Buried in Mound View Cemetery [Mt. Vernon] Age 91, died 1885 [is on the tombstone. Buried next to him is Charlotte] Her stone is unreadable. Lot 67, Norton Rsv., Row 2, Section 6. [Be aware he had a daughter as well as wife named Charlotte] "Obituaries and Death Notices in Mt. Vernon, Ohio Newspapers. 1818-1889" by R.E. Peffers. Page 69. Whitney, Stephen M (Capt.) Funeral held at dec's dau Dr. Woodard [sic] bur MV 13 Mar. 1885. Page 110. Whitney, Stephen M (Capt.) 13 Mar., 1885 age 91 D in Washington, bur Mound View, f/o Mrs. E.G. Woodward & Leonard Whitney of Mt. Vernon. The 1840 census of Clinton Twp., Mt. Vernon, Ohio shows Stephen M. Whitney on page 374. 1 10-15, 1 20-30, 1 40-50 / 2 0-5, 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 3 15-20, 1 40-50. I have information, source unknown, that indicates he made a pension application for service in the War of 1812, USS Schooner Tompkins. His name is found in "Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812" - Schrum, page 65. [Probably as a pensioner]. I do find that an Ann E. (almost matches his second wife, Anna E.) in "Index to Ohio Pensioners of 1883", W. Louis Phillips, C.G., and she was 3349 on the list and from Washington Co., Ohio. Note he was still living at this time and died in Washington _?_. This man was living within 14 miles of my Milton Whitney, who is my stone wall but I do not connect. Ben

Hi Rachel. No, these names are not familiar to me. I have heard of an Asa, but can't connect to him. I'll forward this to the Whitney list. Maybe someone else is familiar with them. I'm researching a Civil War regiment, of which Joseph C. WHITNEY, born abt 1818 was the captain of Minnesota's 6th Regiment, company D. I noticed a Joseph C. WHITNEY, born 23 Jan 1818 at www.whitneygen.org. Does anyone know if he is identical to the Joseph C. WHITNEY I have described? Dear Lyn, and other list users. Please, PLEASE PPLLEEAASSEE do some research before you send out virus warnings like you just did.. This warning has all the characteristics of a hoax, quoting well known companies with generic web addresses, never giving dates ('today', 'yesterday'), and urging you to tell everybody. One such place to check is http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp? or just do a web search on 'virus hoax' (with quotes) To prevent infection: 1) use a good virus checker 2) keep it up to date 3) don't open attachments unless you are confident they are safe George
