    1. [WHITNEY-L] Solomon Whitney, Rindge, NH 1776
    2. Kay and Barney Ostertag
    3. Does anyone have any information about Solomon Whitney of Rindge, NH in 1776. He was on the Colonial America, 1607-1789 Census Index for that year. My ancestor Joshua Webster was also there. His son m Dolly Whitney. Israel was born in Rindge, NH 1772 and ca 1795 moved to Ontario Co., NY w brother Asa Webster. I had thought Israel and Dolly m in Ontario Co., but perhaps he went back for her. My ancestor, their eldest child, Polly Webster, was b in Seneca, Ontario Co., NY in April 1803/4. Perhaps the marriage happened in Rindge? Dolly Whitney was born 16 Sept 1782, I know not where or to whom. She is listed as Israel Webster's wife from a Webster family record and also in a manuscript by Winifred Lovering Holman on the Webster Family at the New England Historic Gen. Library in Boston. Thanks for any help! Kay Ostertag in Minnesota

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Texas Whitney families
    2. Jeanne Muse
    3. Dear WRG: Melissa Bowyer <mdbowyer@earthlink.net>, who is not a member of our list, has asked me to include her Whitney families in the "Unconnected Whitneys" database. If you find a connection with any of her names, contact her directly. Jeanne Melissa wrote: Here is what I have on my Whitney line. First of all, it may possibly be spelled "Whitnie" as that was the spelling on E. William (Bill)'s marriage certificate to Jennie Raines. Also there has been a lot of family lore that suggests either Bill or Jennie was a Cherokee Indian. I haven't been able to prove either of them one way or the other yet. Their eldest child told his descendents that it was Bill and that he was 'kicked out of the tribe for marrying a white woman.' My family had always heard it was Jennie who was the Cherokee. As the years have gone on, I believe it might be the Whitney/Whitnie side since Jennie was listed as a devout Methodist on the boys' applications to an orphanage after both parents passed away. I am wondering about why Bill would have been kicked out for marrying Jennie though. I have had many Indian researchers tell me this would not have happened. On the boys' applications, it says that Bill was of questionable morals and died from too much alcohol which would seem a more likely reason to be bannished. I included a couple of generations below. I did not include any of the newer generations since many of these people are still alive and may not want this information public. 3. These Higginson Books are great if you want the documentation, just remember that they are paperback photocopies of the original books. I ordered the TOWER book and although I have all of the information, I don't have something that I am particularly proud to have on my book shelf. It is a neon pink paperback that is about 5 x 8 inches and two inches thick! Just some insight. Shawn Richard Saunders wrote: > HIGGINSON BOOK COMPANY > 148 Washington Street, P.O. 1. [WHITNEY-L] Re:C V Whitney
    2. Hello all, I live in Saratoga Springs, NY and I have a little info to share on C V (Sonny) and MaryLou Whitney. I believe C V died in 1992 or 3. About 4 or 5 years after his death our city named a short stretch of highway after him. "The Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Memorial Highway" A few years after he passed Mary Lou Sold the property they had in the Adirondacks to the state of NY I believe. She Still owns the property in Saratoga which is located on Rt .50 and I believe the farm is called "Cady Hill." Every year for as long as I can remember the Whitneys have came to Saratoga every summer for Racing season and just before the Travers Stakes they have a huge Ball "Satin and Silks and Stars." Mary Lou has remarried and she and her new husband still come every year and stay at Cady Hill. And The Ball still goes on! I hope this may have helped some of you out there who is related to this line (I am not unfortunately haha) Carol Trembley Clute Saratoga Springs, NY

    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Whitney Horse Farm
    2. Dear Mert: This is the horse farm owned for many years by Cornelius Vanderbilt (Sonny) Whitney, who has been dead for about 15 years, I think. His widow Mary Lou, as far as I know, still owns it. It was an outstanding horsebreeding farm for many years. If you wanted to look him up, use his initials C. V. Whitney. I think he descended from the Saratoga (NY) Whitneys -- the same overall family from which came Joan Payson Whitney, (former?) owner of the New York Mets. There is someone else in the WRG that knows a lot more about this branch. I answered simply because I lived in KY for 38 years and used to read about C. V. in the Lexington Herald. Allan E. Green

    1. Re: [WHITNEY-L] Whitney Horse Farm
    2. Laurie Skillern
    3. Mert, Members of the Whitney family, including Harry Payne Whitney, Mrs. Payne Whitney, Mr. and Mrs.. John Hay Whitney, and Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, have been met in the winner's circle by such horses as two-time Horse of the Year Equipose, Handicap Triple Crown winner Whisk Broom II, the Kentucky Derby winners Regret and Whiskery, the champions Counterpoint, Burgomaster, and Mother Goose, and Citation's champion daughter Silver Spoon. When William Collins Whitney, founder of the Whitney family fortune, President Cleveland's Sectretary of the Navy, and breeder of twenty-six stakes winners, died in February of 1904, his stable was leased to Herman B. Duryea. Among the horses in the Whitney stable was Artful, a two-year-old daughter of Hamburg, the 1898 Horse of the Year for whom John E. Madden named his great breeding farm Hamburg Place. I believe what was left after W. C. Whitney died is now owned by Gainesway Farm. It was once divided up with the round stallion barn going to CV Whitney and Mrs. Whitney keeping the house. When she died in 197? or 198? the house and surrounding property was put up for sale. When CV Whitney died in the 198? Gainesway bought up all the property. Sorry, I don't know exact when the Whitney's came to Kentucky. I know they were prominent horsemen in the Saratoga, New York area before they built/bought the farm near Lexington. The family can be found in the archives at: http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/biography/williamc.html Sincerely, Laurie Whitney Skillern Cabot, Arkansas -----Original Message----- From: Mert Marley <mertmarley@hotmail.com> To: WHITNEY-L@rootsweb.com <WHITNEY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, May 05, 2001 5:34 AM Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Whitney Horse Farm >To All, > >Does anyone know of the WHITNEY's horse farm near the Bourbon Co/Fayette Co. >line in Kentucky? > >There are models of some of the buildings of this place in The Kentucky >Derby Museum. > >Does anyone know when the WITNEYs came to Kentucky? > >Mert Marley >Louisville, KY >Home of The Kentucky Derby >_________________________________________________________________ >Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com > >

    1. [WHITNEY-L] Hope you don't need this
    2. I've just spent the past few hours in cyber-Hell: Upon installing and running a new VirusScan, I received the fun advice that I had a virus, Trojan. I have no clue from whence it came, who I may have inadvertently shared it with, or how long it has lingered amidst the ones and zeros that inhabit my mysterious little glorified typewriter. Hopefully, you have not been a recipient, but I'm sending this advisory to everyone I've relatively (no pun intended, Whitney list) frequently emailed. I'm writing it out below rather than reproducing the way it appears to help you identify whether you have it without taking the chance that, if so, the reproduction might activate it (I don't know whether that is feasible, but I'm in no mood to gamble). It was identified as under Windows, backslash, CPQWIN, backslash, zero-zero B, backslash, DUMM... and in the descriptive space, "Trojan." A worrisome part of the problem I had was that as soon as my (McAfee VirusScan 5.1) was installed, I hit 'scan now' before realizing I had to set the gizmos to clean, delete, isolate or whatever, so the program told me it was there but didn't do anything about it, AND the program had first made a backup which, of course, included the little varmint. Upon setting the program to disinfect I received the notice that my system had to reboot for the settings to take effect, but the program literature warned of possible dire consequences of rebooting with "some" viruses, so I had to manually go into 'find files' to look for and delete the entry, find and delete the backup, before letting the program do its thing. In checking the find files, I did not type in the entire sequence, just the 'cpq' part, which brought up everything close, allowing me to just highlight then delete Merry's typhoid without risking accidental activation. I use AOL, which has indicators of attachments to email, and I almost always delete those without opening that mail. I seldom download anything (although my son suggested it may have come with the IRS forms and pubs last month, but I'm sure he was joking), so I don't think it was carelessness that caused my infection. I dearly hope I did not pass this thing on to anyone but if I did, or if anyone else got it from where ever mine came from, I do hope this helps. Merry

    3. WRG: There is currently posted on the Whitney page of Genform an inquiry concerning a book entitled "Whitney Families of Maine" authored by Charles N. Sinnett. It appears that Sinnett was a genealogist who published many works on families of Maine ancestry. However, I have searched the online catalogues at the Library of Congress, D.A.R. Genealogy Library, and the NEHGS, and have found no mention of this Whitney genealogy. Is anyone in the group familiar with this work? Ken Whitney, Silver Spring, MD

    3. From: "Jeannie Dalrymple" <motherd@theriver.com> KYMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com An old, bearded shepherd with a crooked staff walked up to a stone pulpit and said, "And lo, it came to pass that the trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why doth thou travel far, from town to town, with thy goods when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?" > And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, Dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had, at the top price, without ever moving from his tent. But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secret himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading. And the young man did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums, that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would work only if you bought Brother Gates' drumsticks. And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known "eBay," he said, "we need a name that reflects what we are," and Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "Whoopee!", said Abraham. "No, YAHOO!" said Dot Com.. .and that is how it all began. It wasn't Al Gore after all. ==== KYMONTGO Mailing List ==== shh, be verrrry quiet.......I am hunting forebears. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
