    1. [WHITNEY-L] Only two crests ... ?
    2. J.G. Whitney
    3. Bruce, There are at least 17 different published Whitney crests, over a dozen coats of arms, and probably many more which I have not seen. It is a big subject .... ! As Robert pointed out, only certain descendents are formally allowed to display given bearings, so different family branches devised many variations which they temselves would register with the College of Arms. Bill Whitney of Essex, England has painted at least 8 different ones in watercolour, of which I have a photograph. I will try scanning it to a jpeg. Regards John

    3. I am looking for information regarding Martha Whitney born 1869 in Arkansas or Illinois who married Wallace Pettit born June 1867 in Illinois. They were married June 24, 1888 in Alexander County, Illinois. They had a daughter, Effie Mae Pettit born January 1892.

    3. I will now further confuse the issue. I believe that there was an error at some time in the description of the shield. Where one of the e-mail messages showed a shield with a bull's head over a red and gold cross with a blue background, I believe that the background is supposed to be white. I have photos as follows that I could scan and add to the website: 1 - Icomb Manor (former estate of Sir Robert Whitney) 2 - The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (outside view) 3 - The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (interior view) 4 - The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (baptismal font - dating from Norman times) 5 - The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul - list of Rectors including the church's patrons from1345 to 1663 who were all Whitneys. 6 - Monument to Lucy Booth Whitney in Hereford Cathedral (daughter of Robert Whitney, the last Whitney of Whitney-on-Wye) 7 - Ruin of Clifford Castle, 1 mile southwest of Whitney-on-Wye 8 - Whitney coat of arms in belltower of the Church of St. Mary, Clifford as well as numerous photos of the River Wye In photos #6 and #8 the shield clearly has a white background. With regards to who has the "right" to use such shields, I would presume that the only legal protection of heraldic symbols would exist in Britain. In North America my guess would be that anyone could use them unless protected otherwise by some copyright or trade mark legislation. Hugh Whitney.

    2. Shawn got exactly what I was looking for at http://www.whitneygen.org/misc/coa.html. It's the bull's head crest, in color, a good reproduction. Thanks, Shawn! Now, perhaps someone can explain to me why there are two Whitney crests, one of the bull's head, and one of a shield and knight's helmet, but no bull's head... Bruce

    3. Dear WRG: The following is an excerpt of an article which appeared in the "Berkshire Genealogist", Volume 22 Number 2, Spring 2001, page 56-58. The "Berkshire Genealogist" is published quarterly by the Berkshire Family History Association, Inc., Pittsfield, Mass. ( http://www.berkshire.net/~bfha/index.htm ) Notes: I have capitalized the surnames for emphasis. The author wrote the dates in numerical form as DAY-MONTH-YEAR, which can cause errors while recording. Therefore, for clarity I spelled out the date in parenthesis. [p56] DOCTOR PEREZ MARSH FAMILY >From "The Dalton Papers", by R. W. Fischer, 1997. Reprinted by permission. [p57] A collection of early Dalton papers compiled by the late Donald Baldwin included a comprehensive listing of the Perez Marsh family. While a partial "tree" is presented here, a more detailed genealogy is contained in the "Hartford Marsh Family" book previously referenced. It resides in the Local History section of the Berkshire Athenaeum: [snip] #4 Henry; (son of Henry #3) b. 6-9-1797 (Sept. 6, 1797) d. 4-6-1852 (June 4, 1852) m. 5-9-1821 (Sept. 5, 1821) Sarah WHITNEY. #5 Dwight Whitney; (son of Henry #4) b. 5-11-1823 (Nov. 5, 1823), d. 1896 m. 19-10-1852 (Oct. 19, 1852) Julia White PECK. 2. Here is an interesting site for those who are into heraldry. <A HREF="http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/">College of Arms</A> http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/ The crest is the design on top of the shield which depicts the arms. Also, just because a surname as a listed coat of arms, doesn't mean that coat of arms belongs to that surname. Coat of arms are specific to one person. Have fun with that site...it has loads of info. You might want to check out Cyndi's LInks for Heraldry also.http://www.cyndislist.com/heraldry.htm#General joy

    2. Bruce, the translation I forwarded is in dispute. John Whitney of Oxford states the motto translates to "Boldly Uphold the Cross" and that "Crucem" is the correct spelling. Other WRG members have "Gallantly Uphold the Cross" as the translation. I copied exactly the text at the beginning of my copy of a family document that my parents had by the 1930s or 1940s. Merry

    2. Thank you, John, "(reportedly)" meant I was copying from a document that I can't vouchsafe. "Mighty" does make more sense for "magnanimiter" although "sustinere" is a Latin root for "sustain," and I truthfully don't know whether "Crucen" or "Crucem" is accurate. Please excuse my ignorance -- I don't do Latin (or superfluous corrections). Merry

    3. Dear Robert, Thank you for the offer, I would like to obtain a copy of the jpeg that you have. I attempted to scan the one from the Melville book that I have but the spine is just too fragile. I paid a great deal of $$ for this book and don't want to add to it's wear and tear if I can help it. It has some wonderful photographs from England however. Shawn "Robert L. 3. In scanning through a genealogy of a Poston family, I found the following kindred. They appear to have resided in Kentucky. Hester Farra (27 Mar 1796-22 Sep 1863) m. (1) 1813 John Cassell (10 Jan 1785-30 Mar 1815) and (2) 1823 Elias B. Poston. Hester and John had one son, Samuel Farra Cassell (17 Mar 1838-6 Sep 1852) who married 29 Nov. 1838 Sarah B. Bryan (5 Mar 1816-27 July 1894). They had 9 children: Eudora B., Margaret Bryan, William Bryan, Maltha Elley, Mary B., Eugene Aaron, Alpheus Lewis, Laura Latham, and Sam Anna Cassell.
